Due to computer issues, I’m a little late getting the UFC 170 Notebook going. But here’s what has happened here at the Mandalay Bay Events Center so far:
- Ernest Chavez d. Yosdenis Cedeno by split decision in the opening fight. I scored the bout 29-28 for Chavez, but it was close enough that I could see it going the other way and not have a problem with it. Cedeno is a fun fighter with a terrible haircut who continually left himself open for takedowns. Still, he brought some entertainment into the Octagon for the first preliminary fight (on Fight Pass), which is all you can ask from guys this low on the card.
- Erik Koch d. Rafaello Oliveira by TKO in round 1. Koch looked incredible at 155 pounds. He’s at ease and not at all drained from trying to make the cut. He noted after that he was “a man now, not a boy” and that lightweight was his proper weight class. Time will tell, of course, but that certainly appeared to be the case tonight.
