Cain Velasquez underwent successful surgery earlier this week, and the former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Heavyweight champion took to Facebook to announce to his fans that he will be ready to resume training next month.

His post (via MMA Fighting):

I wanted to update you all on how my injury has been progressing. First off, I want to thank you all for your amazing support. Your messages and your support have really helped me and my family through a tough time. I had orthoscopic surgery on Monday morning to remove some bone spurs that were pinching my sciatic nerve. The surgery was a complete success and I can’t tell you how well I’m feeling already. My doctors have recommended I take it easy for now, but can begin light training in about two weeks. They also think I’ll be able to train at 100 percent in about four to five weeks. I’ll follow their orders, but I can’t wait to get back in there. I’ll keep updating everyone right here and on Twitter.

Thanks again,

Cain

Cain’s injury started a whirlwind of events, which included forcing UFC matchmakers to peg Stipe Miocic as his last-minute replacement against Fabricio Werdum at UFC 196. Of course, that bout didn’t happen as “Vai Cavalo” himself bowed out of the match up after a lingering back injury of his own forced him to the sidelines.

With no title fight to promote a pay-per-view (PPV), UFC officials were forced to rename its upcoming fight cards, including the aforementioned UFC 196, which is now UFC Fight Night 82, and is set to go down this weekend (Sat., Feb. 6, 2016) in Las Vegas, Nevada, airing on FOX Sports 1.

As for Velasquez, there is no timetable for his return to the Octagon at the moment. But, according to Werdum, a rematch between the two of them won’t be happening anytime soon.
