Matt Serra is retired and now scouting future UFC talent on “Lookin’ For a Fight”, but his biggest achievement was capturing the UFC welterweight title with a stunning knockout of Georges St-Pierre back in 2007.
I’ve seen Miesha Tate over Holly Holm and Nate Diaz over Conor McGregor called “stunning upsets”, but those results really weren’t that stunning. The way those respective fights ended may have been stunning turnarounds within competitively matched fights, but the actual outcomes weren’t shocking.
Matt Serra knocking out Georges St-Pierre at UFC 69 (on April 7th, 2007)? THAT’s a stunning result. This fight is arguably the biggest upset in UFC history, with GSP getting play as a -1000 favorite. GSP had just slaughtered Matt Hughes to win the title, having lost to him in 2004, while Serra got the title shot by winning a lackluster fight over Chris Lytle to win TUF 4: The Comeback.
This was supposed to be a St-Pierre domination, but Serra had other ideas. The fight was called at the 3:25 mark of round 1 after Serra wobbled GSP and did not let up once he had him in trouble. You can watch the entire build-up plus the fight itself as the top of the page.
Bloody Elbow was but a few months old when Serra-GSP I happened, but there was indeed play-by-play for this card as done by none other than Kid Nate.
No way GSP loses this. St Pierre by KO in 1
OOOOOH No. Serra knocks GSP the f*** out. Serra knocks him out. this is unbelievable.
For the record, this video was uploaded by the UFC to promote “Lookin’ For a Fight”, and it went up the day before Dana White’s quotes about GSP never moving up to 185 to fight Anderson Silva went public.
