Georges St-Pierre hasn’t committed to a return to mixed martial arts (MMA), despite the fact he’s always training and has maintained his physique since calling it quits a few years ago.
But after he was spotted at UFC 196, the rumor mill started turning, giving fight fans hope for an eventual return. Of course, “GSP” declared he was only in Las Vegas to catch the fights.
Nothing more, nothing less.
If you ask those closest to him, like longtime teammate Rory MacDonald, he is also in the dark about St-Pierre’s future plans. But if he had to guess, if the right amount of money was on the table along with the right opponent, Georges could make a comeback.
His broke it down on The MMA Hour (via Bloody Elbow):
“I really don’t know (if he’s coming back). He’s so secretive! It’s hard to get a read on it, but he’s training and he’s doing good. I don’t know. I think it really comes down to numbers. I think he could come back, if the right amount of money is on the table, if the right fight is there for him. That’s my guess. But I try not to ask Georges about those stuff, because that’s pretty much what everyone wants to ask him.”
Speaking of money, MacDonald will continue to fight for UFC if the promotion shows him the money after UFC Fight Night 89. That’s because he is set to become a free agent after his fight against Stephen Thompson on June 19, 2016.
And since he and the company failed to come to an agreement on a contract extension, “Red King” has vowed to sign with whoever pays him the most cash. Of course, a win over “Wonderboy” will go a long way in assuring he gets a raise from the ZUFFA-owned promotion.
As for Georges, while there are plenty of big-money fights out there for him to take part in, particularly one against current 170-pound champion Robbie Lawler (or maybe this guy), it’s anyone’s guess if a big payday is enough to lure him back into the cage.
After all, UFC president Dana White is adamant “Rush” isn’t lacking coin.
