No champ? No problem!
With Daniel Cormier out because of an injury (read full details here), former Light Heavyweight champion Jon Jones and current top-ranked contender Ovince Saint Preux are set to do battle this Saturday (April 23, 2016) inside MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, headlining UFC 197 with an interim 205-pound title bout. Said belt is only one of two at stake that night, as Demetrious Johnson looks for yet another successful Flyweight title defense against rising prospect and Olympic superstar Henry Cejudo in the pay-per-view (PPV) co-main event of the evening.
That’s not even mentioning the electric Lightweight showdown between Anthony Pettis and Edson Barboza.
Indeed, UFC 197 is a quality card that is chock full of prospects and solid match ups. Is it full of betting bargains as well? Scroll down to find your answer:
UFC 197 Odds For The Undercard:
Sergio Pettis (-260) vs. Chris Kelades (+180) Danny Roberts (-365) vs. Dominique Steele (+255) Carla Esparza (-210) vs. Juliana Lima (+160) James Vick (-190) vs. Glaico Franca (+150) Cody East (-175) vs. Walt Harris (+135) Marcos Rogerio de Lima (-155) vs. Clint Hester (+115) Kevin Lee (-400) vs. Efrain Escudero (+280)
Thoughts: My bargain hunting for this event could best be summarized as an endless loop of Tina’s moan from “Bob’s Burgers.” I can’t find a single set of stand out lines, which means we’re going to have to rely on parlaying heavy favorites again.
Lee could be one of them.
Though he’s let me down before, Lee figures to have pretty much every conceivable advantage over Escudero, who turned in a dreadful performance against Leandro Silva his last time out and lacks the power to test Lee’s shaky chin. “The Motown Phenom’s” about as safe a bet as you can find here.
Vick might be worth a look as well, partially because I dislike him for his team affiliation and getting money would soften the blow of another victory. His length and takedown defense ought to give Franca fits.
UFC 197 Odds For The Main Card:
Jon Jones (-550) vs. Ovince St. Preux (+425) Demetrious Johnson (-440) vs. Henry Cejudo (+350) Anthony Pettis (-175) vs. Edson Barboza (+155) Robert Whittaker (-310) vs. Rafael Natal (+255) Yair Rodriguez (-150) vs. Andre Fili (+130)
Thoughts: Johnson is going to defend his title once again and he’s going to make it look easy. Cejudo may have the superior wrestling pedigree, but he’s not anywhere near as adept at blending his takedowns into his striking as Johnson is. I fully expect him to wilt under Johnson’s pace like so many before, so be sure you’re in position to benefit.
Whittaker seems like a decent investment as well, packing the best striking that Rafael Natal has ever had to deal with. Parlaying him with the aforementioned Vick produces positive odds, which strikes me as a sound investment.
UFC 197 Best Bets:
Parlay — Kevin Lee and Demetrious Johnson: Bet $100 to make $53.47
Parlay — James Vick and Robert Whittaker: Bet $60 to make $61.20
Losing “DC” sucked, sure, but I say UFC 197 is still worth your time and money. See you Saturday, Maniacs!
Initial Investment For 2016: $200 (+$200 infusion) Current Balance: $333.25
