Current WBC Silver Welterweight Champion Amir Khan — who will step into the ring this weekend (Sat., May 7, 2016) to face middleweight kingpin Saul Alvarez in Las Vegas, Nevada — has always been an avid mixed martial arts (MMA) fan.
In fact, the 29-year old British boxer says he dabbled in MMA training for his fight against “Canelo,” which will be contested at 155 pounds.
So would “King” ever consider taking a fight inside the steel cage? As he recently told Daily Star, he doesn’t rule it out.
“You never know what will happen in the future. I’d never say no to getting into MMA. My speed would be perfect, it’s hit and move. And I can kick hard. I’ve already done MMA training. It’s good for preparing to fight a guy like Canelo who likes to put the pressure on.”
Though he is a big fan of Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) featherweight champion Conor McGregor, Khan says he likes his chances if he ever finds himself locked inside the Octagon against “Notorious.”
“I’ve always been a UFC fan and I like McGregor. But if I was to fight the champion around 147 pounds, I would fancy my chances. McGregor or whoever. I was at the last SFL show in Dubai, watching the guys in my weight closely. Even though I have no experience of MMA, I could have stepped in and done the business.”
Might want to talk to James Toney, first, Amir.
And unlike some boxers who just talk about getting into the MMA business, Khan actually has a stake in India’s Super Fight League (SFL) promotion.
But would Khan, who holds a 31-3 record in the sweet science, actually have a chance inside the Octagon against McGregor, or any other top 145-pounder?
