UFC 200 is in the rear view, although it didn’t provide all the thrills and spills we’d hoped for, the landmark pay-per-view event certainly had some game changing results. In terms of the featherweight division, the interim title bout between Jose Aldo and Frankie Edgar will have a massive impact in the coming months. The fight was to both decide the next contender to Conor McGregor’s undisputed belt, if/when he returns to 145-pounds, and also for the junior strap in the Irishman’s absence.
The man ‘The Notorious’ starched in just 13 seconds at UFC 194 emerged from UFC 200 with gold around his waist. Jose Aldo managed to handle and beat Frankie Edgar to the punch, winning the decision after five rounds. Many, present company included, had predicted ‘The Answer’ would continue his rampant streak, but it just wasn’t to be as ‘Scarface’ proved himself to be too much for Edgar.
With McGregor scheduled to rematch ate Diaz at UFC 202, there’s no set time as to where or when Aldo will get a second crack. The fact remains that we don’t know for sure whether ‘The Notorious’ will actually return to 145 pounds, but his Brazilian foe is beckoning for their second dance.
Aldo’s post fight interview was somewhat censored his translator at UFC 200, having just beaten Edgar he was clearly pumped and wanting to send a statement to McGregor. It was relayed in English as ‘I want to beat this guy next,’ as he pointed to the undisputed featherweight boss in the crowd. After the video you’ll see the actual statement Aldo made in the octagon, as well as his proposed date for the rematch.
Taking to Twitter in the moments after the event, Aldo stated he wants a unification bout in the promotion’s debut in New York. UFC 205 will go down at the famous Madison Square Gardens on November 12.
