Dana White fires back at Demetrious Johnson: ‘You want Ray Borg, we’ll give you Ray Borg’

UFC president Dana White and current flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson have been all over the map recently. White desperately wants “Mighty Mouse” to lock horns with former bantamweight king T.J. Dillashaw, while Johnson insists that his next title defense comes against Ray Borg. After much back-and-forth, which included some unusual barbs between both parties, White is conceding and willing to grant Johnson his wish.

“You’re on the cusp of breaking the record and doing all this stuff, … and you’re talking about superfights and you want $2 million and all this other stuff. So I’m not thrilled about it,” White said in a recent interview with MMAjunkie. “But guess what? You want Ray Borg, we’ll give you Ray Borg. I don’t want to hear any (expletive) if it’s not the blockbuster event you expect it to be.”

While White is open to having Johnson break Anderson Silva’s UFC record for most consecutive title defenses in a potential matchup with Borg, the UFC frontman is not particularly excited.

“I’m not thrilled with Demetrious Johnson,” White explained. “You’re the pound-for-pound best in the world, T.J. Dillashaw challenges you – one of the best in the world, former world champion – and you flat out deny the fight, flat out say, ‘I won’t do it. I want Ray Borg.’”

“Who wouldn’t want to see Demetrious Johnson vs. T.J. Dillashaw?” White continued. “Dillashaw calling me every day: ‘I’m cutting weight. I’m cutting weight. I’m dieting. I’m training. I’m cutting weight. Do I got the fight? Do I got the fight?’ Ask T.J. Dillashaw next time you see him or you interview him. Calling me every day, chomping at the bit for the fight. You expect the pound-for-pound best fighter in the world to go, ‘Let’s do it.’”

Dillashaw, who has been training for a potential showdown this summer with “Mighty Mouse,” is no longer cutting weight and has turned his focus back on current bantamweight champion Cody Garbrandt. The change in plans doesn’t necessarily bode well for Johnson and his growing need for bigger pay-per-view (PPV) numbers. Borg is a fine flyweight contender, but not the guy that’s going to push Johnson into the upper echelon of MMA superstars.

For now, Johnson vs. Borg will be the fight to make until the UFC flyweight champion expands his horizons and takes the superfights he’s been calling for.
