Danny Garcia got back in the win column in a big way, stopping Brandon Rios with a big right hand.
Former WBC welterweight champion Danny Garcia (34-1, 20 KOs) returned to the boxing ring on Saturday night’s Showtime Boxing main event in Las Vegas, Nevada. The Philadelphia native was an enormous favorite to beat Brandon Rios (34-4-1, 25 KOs), best known for his trilogy with Mike Alvarado but also well past his prime.
Surprisingly, Rios was competitive against Garcia throughout the fight, but the wars have long caught up with Rios, and in round 9, Garcia uncorked a beautiful right hand that had Rios sprawled on the canvas. While Rios somehow beat the count, Kenny Bayless realized that the 31-year-old was in no condition to continue, and rightfully waived the fight off.

This was Garcia’s first appearance since losing his title to Keith Thurman last March, and while it certainly wasn’t a very impressive performance given he was expected to totally dominate Rios, the knockout was no doubt a great punch.
In the post-fight interview, fellow welterweight contender Shawn Porter (28-2-1, 17 KOs) stepped into the ring and confronted Garcia, making for some interesting drama. Porter doesn’t have a fight booked, although he’s supposed to be Keith Thurman’s mandatory challenger later this year.
