Jessica Andrade earned the unanimous nod over Tecia Torres in the UFC on FOX 28 co-main event.
The UFC on FOX 28 co-main event was graced with top-5 strawweights in which the #2 Jessica Andrade overcame some early counter punches to grind her way to a unanimous decision over the #5 Tecia Torres. Torres came out early landing excellent counter punches to answer the forward pressure of Andrade. The tide seemed to turn when Andrade realized that she could pick up and slam Torres with relative ease, and the takedowns began to pile up. Andrade kept up the pressure and the takedowns throughout the 2nd half of the fight, and did enough to earn the unanimous nod.
Andrade came in to this bout off the strength of a big time beat down that she put on the #3 Claudia Gadelha this past September, and with this win, she sets herself up to challenge the winner of the rematch between Rose Namajunas and Joanna Jedrzejczyk for the belt. Torres came in with a three-fight winning streak, and will have to regroup and try again to earn a shot at strawweight gold.
Co-main event:
Jessica Andrade def. Tecia Torres by Unanimous Decision (29-27, 29-28 x2): Strawweight
Torres landed a big right hand as Andrade moved forward with great aggression. Andrade continued to bull her way towards her opponent, but the quicker Torres successfully moved out of the way while returning fire. A few bombs landed for Andrade, but Torres wore them all rather well and continued to counter punch on the back foot. A big takedown was earned by Andrade with about 10 seconds left in the round, but nothing of value really came of it.
The constant forward momentum of Andrade was present in the 2nd stanza, and the former title challenger was able to close the distance and put Torres on her back. Torres made it back up to her feet and the boxing match with tiny gloves continued on, until Andrade scooped up a couple more takedowns.
Another takedown was realized early in the 3rd frame by Andrade, but Torres was quick to get back up. A couple of hooks landed cleanly for Andrade, and even though Torres ate them like a champ, the strikes were the perfect set up for another takedown. Torres struggled to get up off of her back and the top pressure of Andrade was unrelenting
