“Get ready for what should be a standup war as verbal agreements are in for Andre Winner VS Anthony Njokuani July 2nd,” said UFC president Dana White at UFC.com.
The announcement was made today that UFC lightweights Andre Winner (11-5-1) and Anthony “The African Assassin” Njokuani (13-5, 1NC) would meet at July’s UFC 132 event in Las Vegas.
UFC 132: Cruz vs. Faber will take place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on July 2 and feature a bantamweight title bout between champ Dominick Cruz and challenger Urijah Faber.
Winner, who lost to fellow Brit Ross Pearson in the “TUF 9″ final, is on a two fight losing skid and is likely looking at the end of the line with the UFC if he loses again. He was submitted last November by German fighter Dennis Siver at UFC 122, while dropping a unanimous decision to Nik Lentz at UFC 118, putting his overall record with the top promotion at 2-3.
Njokuani also suffered a loss in his last fight at the hands of Edson Barboza at UFC 128. The bout marked “The African Assassin’s” UFC debut, saw both men earn the “Fight of the Night” bonus, but still wasn’t enough as the judges awarded Barboza the unanimous decision. The former WEC fighter, who has three straight “Knockout of the Night” bonuses, sports a 4-4 record fighting under Zuffa contract.
