Teammate vs teammate beefs are nothing new in the sport of mixed martial arts (MMA). And most of the time, not always, beefs can be squashed and everything can go back to normal if cooler heads prevail.
Colby Covington has made a career out of getting under peoples skin, even if it means throwing his own teammates under the bus from time to time. Case in point, when Dustin Poirier lost to Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 242, “Chaos” was quick to clown on “The Diamond” for his tearful post-fight speech.
That prompted Poirier to warn Covington that whenever they crossed paths at American Top Team (ATT), fists would start flying no questions asked. Assuming the Secret Service wasn’t around, of course.
That said, Colby recently revealed that everything was all good between he and Poirier, but still took a little jab at him during an ESPN interview. Soon thereafter, he once again took to social media to apologize for going back on his word.
Covington further elaborated during an interview with MMA Junkie.
“I want to make a little apology; I got out of line yesterday. I can be a bigger man and admit when I’m wrong, and I broke a promise of Dan Lambert, and I feel extremely ashamed of myself doing that,” said Covington.
“I thought that – you know I was caught in the moment, and I got caught off guard with a question yesterday when asked about Dustin Poirier, and I kind of regret it. I wish I didn’t go so hard on him.
“He’s a teammate, he’s a friend now, we have no personal beef anymore. It’s just business, and everything needs to keep calm and good at American Top Team, and I don’t want any more issues with that. I just want to move on,” he added.
Of course, not everything is sunshine and rainbows at ATT, as Covington still has issues with Jorge Masvidal, and more recently added to his existing beef with Joanna Jedrzejczyk. So while one beef has been squashed, there is still plenty of tension down in Coconut Creek, Florida.
“He’s (Poirier) a different weight class, and I’m going to focus on what’s important and what’s ahead of me and that’s either ‘Marty Fakenewsman,’ ‘Journeyman’ Jorge Masvidal or ‘Tyquil’ Woodley.”
Baby steps, I suppose.
