Bloody Elbow fight experts, Zane Simon & Dayne Fox, are here tonight – Saturday, October 9th., 2021, to breakdown the UFC Vegas 39: ‘Mackenzie Dern vs. Marina Rodriguez’ event, which was broadcast from the cozy confines of the APEX Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The guys will have hot takes, possible next fights, as well as reactions to the overall event in the player above, or the show can be caught on our Bloody Elbow Presents YouTube Channel or any of our BE Presents Podcast Network Platforms. (SPOILERS…)
After undergoing four cancelled bouts (two due to COVID & two due to withdraws) while setting up this card; the UFC featured a short and early midday 9-bout Fight Night event, so as not to compete with the big Fury-Wilder 3 boxing event tonight. A Women’s StrawWeight bout took the spotlight as the headliner for the UFC Vegas 39 event. Up-and-comers, #5 ranked Mackenzie Dern and #6 ranked, Marina Rodriguez went to war with one another in the main event of this little card, which many were simply calling, “Better than next weeks card?”
Dern took the wrong message from round two. Rather than taking away the fact she could get the fight to the ground, she appeared to lament the fact she couldn’t submit Rodriguez. The fight has been all Rodriguez since then. #UFCVegas39

All things said and done, now that this card is in the books, the main event actually wasn’t as lackluster as anticipated earlier this week. Dern and Rodriguez managed to put on a decent, entertaining show for us. Plus, the decision for Marina was a solid one by the judges for a change, (49-46×3).
Obviously right answer. https://t.co/mrqsFJCwwy

For the co-main event, we had a fun WelterWeight brawl between Randy ‘Rudeboy’ Brown, who was sporting a 13-4 record and Jared ‘Nitetrain’ Gooden with his 18-6 record to date. The fight went the distance, without grappling. The judges scorecard awarded Brown with a unanimous victory, (30-27×3). Worth noting from the post-fight interview, “The first kick I threw, the uptick, dislocated my big toe.” – Randy Brown.
“I thought about it for a second, but I was having too much fun.” – Randy Brown on not grappling, says he’s giving away his full fight kit over on Instagram. #UFCVegas39

We also had a couple decent finishes on the four-bout main card from Mariya Agapova over Sabina Mazo, who threw a smashing punch and took the ‘W’ following it up with a nice rear naked choke at the opening of the third round; and well worth mentioning, was our first finish of the card from Alexander Romanov over Jared Vanderaa, via KO/TKO G&P at the close of the second round.
Agapova clearly learned from her loss to Dobson. Far more mature performance has her up two rounds on Mazo. #UFCVegas39

Anyone else interested in the possibility of a Romonov-Latifi fight next? #UFCVegas39

During the five-bout prelims card we had two more relatively quick finishes as well, from Lupita Godinez over Silvana Gomez Juarez, via Armbar submission in the first round; and from Steve Garcia over Charlie Ontiveros, via KO/TKO, G&P in the beginning of the second round.
That’s a lot more like the Loopy Godinez that was picking up wins on the regionals. Had a hard debut in the UFC, but she’s clearly a very talented, physical fighter. #UFCVegas39

Garcia passes to mount. Ontiveros once again just showing terrible grappling instincts. Jumped that guillotine again as Garcia was in on his hips and it was disasterous. #UFCVegas39

This week the guys’ picks heading into the now 9-bout event were:
Both: Dern
Both: Brown
Zane: Elliott, Dayne: Nicolau
Both: Mazo
Both: Gutierrez
Both: Romanov
Both: Jackson
Both: Godinez
Both: Garcia
Overall, this now mere 9-bout card saw only one exhilarating first round finish, two impressive KO/TKO’s, one sweet submission, and five hard-fought decisions including our main event, and one split. Rounding things out, bonuses for putting forth POTN efforts went to Mariya Agapova and Loopy Godinez; FOTN honors went to Marina Rodriguez vs. Mackenzie Dern. What a great afternoon of fights we have to share with you, join us to discuss all the action…
