Nate Diaz has ruled himself out of the running to be the man who welcomes Conor McGregor back to the Octagon after his injury lay off.
The Irishman suffered a broken tibia and fibula during the first round of his third fight with Dustin Poirier at UFC 264. McGregor has been documenting his recovery process online and appears intent on returning to action in the summer of 2022.
Diaz, who has just one fight left on his current UFC contract, seems to be the perfect opponent to welcome ‘Notorious’ back to action. Both men have patchy records as of late and seem away off competing for title honours.
The Stockton, California native and McGregor have a rich history and are currently tied 1-1 after two fights. Now seems like the perfect time to set up a tiebreaking trilogy fight, but Diaz says that is won’t be happening – at least not anytime soon.
“I’m not fighting Conor until his leg grows back and he beats some people so we know he can even fight still till then, “Diaz wrote on social media. “Can I get on January card @ufc Thanks”
Nate Diaz Has Been Angling For A Fight With Dustin Poirier
‘The Diamond’ is coming off of a devasting lightweight title loss to Charles Oliveira and recently revealed the only fight that truly excites him is one with the younger Diaz brother.
Diaz and Poirier exchanged some messages on social media and ultimately agreed to fight each other in January. However, that seemingly won’t happen and the UFC has apparently vetoed the fight, with Diaz claiming they don’t want to pay Poirier.
“The ufc don’t wanna pay for u dp sorry u suck Loser,” Diaz wrote in response to Poirier saying he was hoping to make the fight for UFC 271 in February.
