UFC welterweight Jorge Masvidal is officially set to take on Kamaru Usman for the welterweight title at UFC 251 on Yas Island, Abu Dhabi.

Taking to twitter today ESPN’s Ariel Helwani confirmed the news stating that Masvidal had been cleared to travel to Abu Dhabi after passing a COVID-19 test.

“Jorge Masvidal passed his COVID-19 test. He will be leaving for Abu Dhabi tomorrow. As a result, the UFC has officially announced the Usman vs. Masvidal fight on its social channels.”

The news has been highly anticipated since Gilbert Burns was forced to pull out of the event after testing positive for COVID-19.

This saw Masvidal back in the picture after failed negations for the bout earlier this year. The pair had been lined up to face off following an altercation between the two at the Superbowl back in 2019.

Since then it seemed this was to be Usman’s next title defense until contract negotiations stalled after the UFC and Masvidal were unable to come to terms with money.

The UFC announced the fight on twitter earlier today (6/7/2020).

“OFFICIAL, The BMF steps in on six days notice for #UFC251”

Due to these unprecedented circumstances, it seems an agreement has been reached between the two parties, and now the long-anticipated matchup between the two will come to fruition.

At this stage there has been no information shared regarding Burns getting his shot at the title. Burns earned the opportunity after defeating Tyron Woodley earlier this year.

The match up was to see him face off against his team-mate Kamaru Usman for the welterweight title.

Due to the two sharing a coach, Usman took his camp to a different location under the guidance of head coach Trevor Wittman.

Who do you see taking out the victory in this short notice matchup?

Will Jorge Masvidal upgrade his BMF belt to full on welterweight gold? It’s possible, but the oddsmakers certainly don’t think it’s likely.

Has the Baddest Motherf**ker bitten off more than he can chew?

That seems to be the opinion of the oddsmakers as they set the lines on the as of yet not quite confirmed new headline fight for UFC 251 on July 11th between Kamaru Usman and Jorge Masvidal.

Best Fight Odds has a collection of odds from some of the biggest sportsbooks across the internet, and across the board they sit around -325 for Usman and +250 for Masvidal. For those that aren’t super familiar with the way betting odds work, the bigger the difference between those two numbers, the more likely oddsmakers expect a fight to be a blowout in favor of the negative numbered fighter.

More competitive fights on the card look like Volkan Oezdemir (-160) vs. Jiri Prochazka (+140) or Elizeu Zaleski Dos Santos (+100) vs. Muslim Salikhov (-120). The only fight on UFC 251 with wider odds than Usman vs. Masvidal is the Amanda Ribas (-850) vs. Paige VanZant (+575) fight, which is widely considered to be a purposeful mismatch designed to clown VanZant after she talked s**t about her UFC pay and looks to test free agency.

Stylistically, it makes sense that the bookies would be unsure of Masvidal’s chances. He’s struggled against grapplers in the past, and there’s few men in the UFC let alone the welterweight division who have the wrestling pedigree and MMA application of Usman. But it’s also worth noting that the sportsbooks continue to sleep on Masvidal whenever he’s facing a perceived challenge. Take a look at some of his other underdog odds: He was +170 against a -230 Ben Askren. +175 against -245 Darren Till. And +140 against -180 Donald Cerrone.

So Masvidal has made his name defying the odds over the past two years. Can he do it against Kamaru Usman, who dominated Tyron Woodley and proved he has skills on the feet in a slobberknocker against Colby Covington? I guess we’ll have to wait until July 11th to find out (if the Coronavirus testing goes our way, of course).

The champ is a healthy favorite over the last-minute replacement for the UFC 251 headliner.

We now have a new main event for UFC 251, following the unfortunate news that Gilbert Burns was forced out of a welterweight title fight due to a positive COVID-19 test. That replacement will be Jorge Masvidal, and he is a sizeable underdog to Usman according to bookmakers that have already laid down a line on the fight.

According to 5Dimes, Usman is currently a healthy -290 favorite, while the line on Gamebred comes back at +230.

This line is further apart than the Usman-Burns line, which saw Usman sit at around a -200 favorite. That’s not surprising, given the short time to prepare for Masvidal. It is the sixth time in seven fights that Masvidal has come in as an underdog, only being slightly favored over Nate Diaz in their BMF title fight. Usman has been the betting favorite going into all but one UFC fight – his title fight with Tyron Woodley, which of course he won.

UFC 251 is scheduled to go down Saturday, July 11th on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi. Usman vs. Masvidal will be on top (pending a negative COVID-19 test), with two other title fights on the bill as well – Alexander Volkanovski vs. Max Holloway in a rematch for the featherweight title, and Petr Yan vs. Jose Aldo for the vacant bantamweight title.
