Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) doesn’t have an event this weekend so regrettably, I am forced to compensate for that lack of pre-event coverage with awful video posts like the one above, which may look familiar to longtime fans of mixed martial arts (MMA).

Hussain Ayyad broke his leg in the first round, courtesy of a defensive check from Matiss Zaharovs, in the Brave FC 29 event last Friday inside Khalifa Sports City Arena in Bahrain, a grisly scene not unlike the Anderson Silva vs. Chris Weidman finish from late 2013.

Revisit that disturbing gallery by clicking here, if you’re into that sort of thing.

Anyone who remembers what happened to Corey Hill at the promotion’s “Fight for the Troops” event more than a decade ago (see it) will know “The Spider” wasn’t the first televised leg break. We also had the Tyrone Spong disaster under the GLORY banner in early 2014.

Kinda makes you wonder how something like this is even possible.

Earlier this month, former UFC light heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell caused quite the debate within the combat sports community.

“The Iceman” suggested in a recent interview with Ed Mylett that he would beat boxing heavyweight legend Mike Tyson in a streetfight. Here’s what Liddell had to say.

“In a street fight, I’d win,” Liddell told Ed Mylett. “I mean, he’s got a puncher’s chance. He’s got a chance to catch me coming in. But other than that, it’s over.”

Now, Liddell has taken to social media to double down on these claims, responding to fans on Twitter for his comments. Liddell clarified his comments were geared towards when he and Tyson were both in the prime of their fighting careers, not their current selves now.

Look 1) I’m talking about when we were fighting 2) I’d take him down so he’d have one shot on my way in 3) I’m a big fan of mike and have no desire to fight him. But hypothetically speaking, when we were fighting, yes I would’ve beat him!”

I remember Tyson and I’m a huge fan of his but I’m not sure why biting Holyfield’s ear off makes him a better street fighter or better at stopping takedowns?”

He won’t get three minutes I’d shoot right away. He had no ground training or takedown defense training at all. So he’d have to catch me on the way in or he’d never get off the ground period!”

Of course, Tyson’s days of fighting are long behind him, so there’s no true possibility of ever finding out what would happen. However, Liddell comes off a knockout loss to Tito Ortiz in a widely criticized trilogy bout between the pair that was put on by Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy MMA promotion. Despite the vicious knockout loss, Liddell has still not definitively shut the door on fighting.

What do you think about Liddell’s comments regarding a street fight with Tyson?

It remains unclear who will challenge Israel Adesanya for the UFC middleweight title next. Adesanya was initially expected to make his first title defense against Paulo Costa. However, the Brazilian suffered an injury that will keep him out-of-action until the second quarter of 2020.

Now, it’s been suggested that Yoel Romero could challenge Adesanya in his place. As that materializes, Adesanya recently spoke to MMA Fighting to discuss the state of the 185-pound division at the moment. In regards to current challengers, Adesanya seems very impressed by former light heavyweight competitor Jared Cannonier.

Cannonier comes off a TKO win over Jack Hermansson. Speaking on Cannonier, Adesanya said he believes the heavy-handed challenger is the second-most dangerous fighter in the division, behind himself.

“100 percent I’m looking at him,” Adesanya said. “He’s a beast in the division. He’s the dark horse in the division. He’s the guy everyone is sleeping on but you can’t sleep on him because you’ll get put to sleep.

“I think he’s the guy, the second most dangerous guy in the division behind myself. I look forward to fighting him after his next fight.”

Adesanya was looking forward to the opportunity to fight a rival in Costa next, and believed the pre-fight trash talk would’ve helped sell the fight. However, “Stylebender” believes a potential clash with Cannonier sells itself, with no smack talk needed.

“I was looking forward to my next fight, because that would have sold itself,” Adesanya said. “Because he would try to trash talk me in his broken English, and I would embarrass him on the mic, and then eventually I’d embarrass him on the mat. So that was already set in stone that it was going to be glorious.

“But a guy like Cannonier, I don’t have to. The fight sells itself because of the skill set, and just people want to watch me. Something about me that people just want to watch me get my ass kicked maybe. So they’ll be tuning in either way.”

What do you think about Adesanya labeling Cannonier as the most dangerous challenger at 185 pounds?

Heavyweight championship? Six-figure payday?

Nah, Anthony Johnson just wants to hurt people, which is why he’s contemplating a summer 2020 return to mixed martial arts (MMA), the sport for athletes who love to inflict pain, but don’t feel like spending their holidays in the slammer.

How do you think we ended up with Greg Hardy?

Like the “Prince of War,” Johnson (22-6) also has a dubious past when it comes to violence against women (watch your yoga mat around this guy) but doesn’t get nearly as much heat as the former Gridiron great because the promotion has big brooms and heavy carpets.

“We have to meet with the UFC some more,” Johnson told The Mac Life about his ongoing negotiations. “We have to go over things and just figure some stuff out but it’s all looking good so far. I was trying to shoot for April-May but maybe June-July. We’ll see. But whenever I come back I’m going to make sure it’s known. I want to come back and showcase everything and fight and just hurt people.”

Johnson, 35, abruptly retired from combat sports following a submission loss to Daniel Cormier at UFC 210 back in early 2017, a surprising turn of events when you consider his only two losses at 205 pounds came against the former champ.

“Rumble” holds knockout wins over Alexander Gustafsson and Glover Teixeira, just to name a few.

In the two-plus years Johnson has remained inactive, he’s certainly kept himself busy outside the cage. First there was the cannabis facility, then the bodybuilding career, followed by his ambassador role in bare-knuckle boxing … heck, he even carved out some time to become homeless.

One thing is for certain, Johnson won’t be able to make his UFC return until his current restraining order expires in February.
