Nam Phan versus ‘Kung fu man in his 50s’ took place at Phan’s MMA gym last week.

Since leaving the UFC in 2014, former TUF contestant Nam Phan has bounced around a lot in his professional fighting career. He popped up in Bellator, briefly, before winning the featherweight King of Pancrase Championship in 2015. He lost that title that same year and has since appeared in DEEP and ACB. He’s also tried his hand at pro boxing; going 0-8-1 between 2015 and 2018.

Last week, Phan padded his record with a different kind of fight; an MMA vs. traditional martial arts showcase. In that bout, which happened at his Nam Phan MMA Academy in Garden Grove, CA, Phan took on a so-called ‘Kung Fu fighter’ who looked larger and much much older than him.

Check out the video below to see how the traditional martial artist fared against an experienced professional combat sports athlete.

In the video, Phan handles the older gentleman with ease. The fight, which took place in a ring with a referee, was fought with “stand-up rules only” and lasted around five minutes. Throughout the contest Phan battered the challenger, knocking him down and eventually out. The fight was attended by a few dozen spectators who crowded around the ring apron.

The video was uploaded to YouTube on March 21st by user dxmakina. In the accompanying caption that user wrote, “Just another day in Little Saigon,” before describing Phan’s opponent.

“The Kung fu man was in his 50s and decided to try himself against the pro mma fighter Nam Phan,” wrote the uploader. “The Vietnamese Kung Fu he practiced is called “Hong Gia”.”

The fight between Phan and unnamed-Kung-Fu-guy is just the latest in a series of fights between MMA trained fighters and traditional martial arts practitioners. In China Xu Xiaodong (aka Mad Dog) has found international fame/infamy thanks to his fights versus so-called masters of Tai Chi and Wing Chun.

Shortly after being introduced as the newest member of the UFC Hall of Fame, Michael Bisping jokes about coming out of retirement after Conor McGregor’s tweet.

Bisping’s tweet came after McGregor shared a bizarre post that indicated that the Irish superstar would be calling it a career as it relates to MMA.

“The Count” is, of course, joking. Nonetheless, you have to appreciate the Brit’s humor. Bisping will be enshrined in the UFC’s Hall of Fame this year after a career that spanned some fourteen years and he culminated it with middleweight gold.

What about McGregor? As most people thought the Irishman was kidding about his retirement when he sent that tweet last night, much like he did in 2016, much has changed overnight.

Joan Jett Will Play Ronda Rousey’s Entrance Song Live At WrestleMania

‘Bad Reputation’ has been Rousey’s walkout song for years and now Jett will perform it live to kick off her historic WrestleMania main event.

The WWE is pulling out all the stops for their first all-women WrestleMania main event on April 7th. On Monday they announced that a ‘Triple Threat’ match between Ronda Rousey, Becky Lynch, and Charlotte Flair would headline WrestleMania 35. And now they’ve revealed that Ronda Rousey will make the walk down to the squared circle with the help Joan Jett playing her hit Bad Reputation live.

Bad Reputation has been Rousey’s walkout song for the majority of her MMA career and her current run with the WWE. It’s been a big hit with fans, and Joan Jett herself.

“I’m really amazed when people utilize our music to represent them in something that they do,” Jett told CM Punk in an interview for AXS TV. “So I thought it was so great that she walks out to Bad Reputation.”

Rousey explained how the Joan Jett anthem became her walkout song of choice in a 2015 interview with The Wall Street Journal.

“Lots of professional fighters want their walkout song to sound like the Rocky theme — you know, regal and inspiring,” Rousey said. “I’m more on the theatrical side, so I needed something gritty, with a lot of attitude. My walkout theme used to be ‘Sex and Violence’ by the Exploited, a Scottish punk band. It’s loud and brash, and the title’s words are pretty much it for the song’s lyrics.”

”Then in 2011, I was fighting with Strikeforce, when Showtime wanted to air my bout on its late-night premium channel,” she continued. “That was a big break, but Showtime thought my song was inappropriate. It was hard to choose a new one. I tried some Rage Against the Machine songs, but none of them felt right. Then my godfather’s son suggested Joan Jett’s ‘Bad Reputation’ from 1981. I had just heard the song on my car radio in the parking lot of the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas.”

It’s unclear at this point if Lynch and Flair will get their own live accompaniment for the Triple Threat match, or if any of the other WWE superstars will for WrestleMania 35. As of right now, it’s just another sign that Rousey is considered one of the biggest draws on the roster, and they’re pulling out all the stops to make her historic main event one for the ages.

Conor McGregor wants a piece of ownership of the UFC. However, that doesn’t sound likely to happen.

“The Notorious” seems to be playing hardball with the promotion. He announced his retirement from mixed martial arts (MMA) on Twitter earlier this morning. UFC President Dana White spoke to TMZ Sports on the matter recently.

In regards to McGregor’s request for UFC ownership, White says he told the Irishman over text message that was never going to happen (via MMA Mania):

”He wrote ‘I feel like I should own a piece of the company.’” White said. “And I said ‘Conor, you know that’s never going to happen.’ But this was a couple of weeks ago.”

Haven’t Discussed It

White did note, however, that he and McGregor have never sat down and discussed a possible ownership deal face-to-face. The conversation has only happened through text:

“But Conor has never come out, sat down with me and said ‘I want a piece of the company and here’s why.’ We’ve never had that conversation. We did it in text two weeks ago. Like I’ve said, I’ve never had a bad conversation with Conor McGregor in the entire time he’s been with this company.

“You know I love the guy. He’s got plenty of money. If he wants to retire that’s his decision, and I always say when you start talking about retirement, it’s probably something you should do if that’s what you’re thinking.”

After being asked if a sit-down conversation could result in McGregor actually getting UFC ownership, White said one needs to put up the money to buy a piece of the company just like anyone else would:

”Listen, if you want to own a piece of the company, you have to put up the money to buy a piece of the company,” White said. “That’s how it works. These are all parts of negotiations. If you wanted to buy into the UFC right now, the valuation is pretty huge.”

Former interim welterweight champion Colby Covington claims current champ Kamaru Usman is ‘faking injuries’ in an attempt to avoid fighting him. He’s not a fan of his manager, either.

Covington remains skeptical of the severity of Usman’s injuries despite evidence that he has already had several procedures done. Moreover, Covington believes that “The Nigerian Nightmare” is doing everything he can to avoid an eventual fight with him.

“He’s faking injuries,” Covington said. (via MMA Junkie) “He’s trying to use his belt as a bargaining tool, trying to get into Hollywood, go for Hollywood sets and stuff. He’s just following the Tyron Woodley gameplan: That’s fake injuries, delay the process as long as you can, hold up the division. It’s a sad state in the division, but I’m going to make the division great again soon.”

A showdown between Covington and Usman has been steadily building to a head. Both fighters train at American Top Team in Coconut Creek, Florida and neither man really cares for the other.

Covington upped the trash talk and said Usman’s manager Ali Abdelaziz is feeding him lines:

“More lines that Ali Abdel-A-Sleaze is feeding him. (Usman) doesn’t even know what he’s talking about to be honest. He doesn’t know the difference between legal and illegal immigrants. It’s a sad state. He’s trying to figure out his identity; he doesn’t know his identity. It’s just sad, man. He’s trying to be this good guy, but then he’s out attacking me in the Palms buffet line, putting people’s lives in danger. It’s sad. I can’t wait to punch a hole in his face.”

When it comes to hyping a fight, few fighters take it further than Covington. He and Usman definitely have different strategies as it comes building interest in a fight.

“I think anything goes,” Covington said. “You just want to generate fans and get people to view. But you’ve got to know what you’re talking about. Don’t make this a political thing if you don’t know anything about politics. He doesn’t know what he’s talking about. He’s just going to make himself look really stupid. And that’s probably why he’s got a Division II education, and I’ve got a Division I education from a prestigious university.”

Hopefully, these two will meet inside the Octagon and then all the trash talking won’t matter. Either Covington’s seven-fight winning streak will disappear or Usman’s 10-fight streak and title are no more.

Covington doesn’t think its even going to be close.

“It’s going to look like an amateur vs. a professional,” Covington said. “He’s going to look like an amateur that night. He’s tried to copy my blueprint to success his whole career. The (Rafael dos Anjos) fight, the Demian Maia fight, even the Woodley fight. Those are things I’ve already done. I left those guys for dead, and he came and picked the bones off the carcasses. He hasn’t done anything that I haven’t done yet. He wants to be me, but he’s never going to beat me. It’s going to look real bad. I promise you that. He’s going to be in a pool of blood, and he’s going to have to go away from the octagon in a stretcher.”

If Covington does beat Usman and capture the welterweight strap, he promises to make the division exciting again. And with contenders like Ben Askren, that could easily be achieved.

“(Till and Thompson losing) doesn’t change really anything for me,” Covington said. “I’ve kind of been on top of the mountain by myself for a while, so this just kind of clears it out more. There’s nowhere else to go for Marty Usman. He’s been faking injuries. He’s trying to fight anybody but me. But now there’s nobody else. I’m the only one here, so there’s nowhere for him to run and hide anymore. …

“It’s exciting times for the welterweight division. I just want to keep knocking off top contender after top contender. I told the UFC, I told Dana (White) that I was here to make the division great again, and that’s by doing what the fans want, what the people want. Whoever they say is next, that’s going to be who’s next.”
