Cain Camp Not Sleeping On Ngannou’s KO Power

Former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez will make his long-awaited return to action, as he is set to face Francis Ngannou at UFC on ESPN 1 on Feb. 17 from inside Talking Stick Resort Arena in Phoenix, Arizona.

It’s not exactly a warm-up fight for the ex-champion, who will be fighting for the first time in two and a half years, as “The Predator” has power in his hands to sleep a baby elephant…or a “Demolition Man.”

That’s why Cain’s trainer Javier Mendes is taking all precautions going into the fight, as he knows all it takes is one hit from Francis to put an end to the fight.

“Can Cain beat him? Absolutely. Can Cain maul him? Absolutely. But can Cain get knocked out by a guy that hits like a freakin’ train? Yes. So my job is to be very careful with a guy like that. We can’t deviate with him,” explained Mendes in an interview with MMA Fighting.

“He’s too strong, he hits way too hard, he’s really fast, and now it looks like he’s got his mojo back. For a while there, it looked like he was fighting himself. Maybe overconfident, under-confident. I think he went from overconfident to under-confident to now confident. I don’t think he’s overconfident now, I just think he’s confident. So I feel that we have the most dangerous [Ngannou] that anybody’s ever faced now, because I think he’s finally got it down. One shot changes everything,” he added.

Indeed, Cain knows all-too well how quickly things can change, as he was knocked out for the first time ever by Junior dos Santos at UFC on FOX 1 back in 2011 in the very first round. In an interesting twist, the two men were the headliners in what was the debut event for FOX.

Velasquez will look to avoid that this time around as he ushers in the UFC on ESPN era in his own backyard. For Ngannou, a win over Velasquez will be a huge feather in his cap and help him score back-to-back wins for the first time since 2017.

UFC bantamweight Petr Yan has signed a new contract, and he has a new fight lined up for February 23rd.

Exciting Russian bantamweight Petr Yan is one of the top names to watch in 2019, and his next fight will be against a former UFC title challenger.

ESPN’s Ariel Helwani reports that Yan is set to face John Dodson at UFC Fight Night: Prague on February 23rd. Yan announced on Twitter that he has also signed a new four-fight contract with the promotion.

Yan (11-1) has fought three times in the UFC, stopping Teruto Ishihara in his debut, winning a wildly entertaining decision over Jin Soo Son, and most recently prompting Douglas Silva de Andrade’s team to invoke the rare MMA corner stoppage due to a prolonged beating. The 25-year-old is clearly a gifted fighter with potential to make his way towards a title shot if he keeps on churning out the wins.

Dodson (20-10) twice fought for the UFC flyweight belt, losing both times to Demetrious Johnson. The hard-hitting Dodson returned to bantamweight in 2016, with inconsistent results. He’s coming off a rather dull decision loss to Jimmie Rivera at UFC 228, but he does hold a split decision over Pedro Munhoz from UFC 222 last March.

UFC Prague takes place in the Czech Republic, with the entire event streaming live on ESPN+. In the main event, Thiago Santos takes on Jan Blachowicz in a crucial five-round light heavyweight battle.

Tyson Fury has a hilarious message for Deontay Wilder ahead of their likely rematch.

Since their meeting last month, Fury has been keeping in shape for the inevitable rematch between himself and “The Bronze Bomber.” However, in a recent interview with BT Sport, Fury issued out a hilarious message for his familiar foe:

“I’m just maintaining my fitness really, I’m [as] fit now as I was then, same kind of thing, I’m ready to fight. Wilder, let’s get the fight made, don’t s*** yourself now mate!”

Fury and Wilder put on a fight that boxing fans will remember for years to come. While many believe the Englishman got the better of the heavy-handed slugger in terms of technicality, Wilder scored the only two knockdowns of the fight. In the 12th round, Wilder knocked Fury to the canvas with a shot that could’ve been ruled a knockdown. Somehow, Fury got to his feet and was able to finish the fight.

When the final bell rang, the fight went to the judges’ scorecards. Many were upset with the result, but the history books will read the bout ended in a Split Decision Draw. For now, Wilder will hang on to the WBC heavyweight strap. But it seems inevitable that they will meet once again in the first quarter of 2019.

It looks like the rumors of Conor McGregor getting back into the ring against Paulie Malignaggi aren’t true.

Recently, rumors have been flying around that McGregor and Malignaggi’s team’s are in early discussions for a boxing match. However, Malignaggi tells Express UK that those rumors aren’t true:

“Not true,” Malignaggi said. “But of course, Conor is the king of bulls**t so I would not be surprised if this Conor having his team put out rumours just to keep his name in the headlines.”

The beef between McGregor and Malignaggi began back in 2017. Malignaggi was initially brought in as part of McGregor’s training camp for his boxing fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. However, things got sour when McGregor released a clip of he and Malignaggi’s sparring session. The clip favored McGregor, as Malignaggi was shown falling down after either a trip or knock down.

Malignaggi subsequently left the camp and has been bitter about the incident ever since. He would love the opportunity to pay McGregor back inside the boxing ring in front of millions around the world. But Malignaggi doubts McGregor would ever step into the ring with him:

“I assure you he will never fight me,” Malignaggi said. “No balls wasn’t a catchphrase, it is a fact. I’m sure the footage will be cut around to show what they want to show you. He doesn’t have much, though. Having said that, even with the not much they have, they’ve convinced basically everyone of this bulls**t narrative.

“It’s actually good fun to watch. I assure everyone it is, but he’s trying to perpetuate a lie. Me not being in shape or sharp aside, it was good action. And he has to thank his lucky stars that’s the shape I was in.

“Because despite 16oz gloves and headgear, that’s the only reason he doesn’t get stopped even in sparring. I had to deaden the pace for the sake of making sure I can finish the twelve rounds.”

True Footage?

He claimed his shape was the reason he didn’t decimate McGregor. Malignaggi closed by saying McGregor wouldn’t release ‘un-doctored’ footage of their infamous sparring:

“It is the only reason he doesn’t get assaulted by me in that session. He has to, though, as we did eight rounds the first time. That one I still hadn’t got the memo that we had a beef and I took the casual approach to figuring out that he needs work. The second one, we both were meaner spirited though.

“He can show all footage, but if you haven’t got anything to be ashamed about, including the knockdown footage being twisted with the strange camera angles to sell it, then just show it as it is, right? I still don’t believe he has the balls to show the footage un-doctored.”
