The official UFC rankings have been updated heading into July 7’s pay-per-view UFC 226 from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

And one of its featured fighters was the main benefactor of the rankings update.

Light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier rose to the No. 4 spot on the pound-for-pound list prior to his heavyweight super fight with Stipe Miocic in the UFC 226 main event, sending former middleweight and welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre down two spots to No. 5.

In other rankings movement, rising welterweight Leon Edwards failed to break into the Top 10 after defeating longtime veteran Donald Cerrone in the main event of last Saturday’s (Sat., June 23, 2018) UFC Fight Night 132 from the Singapore Indoor Stadium in Kallang, Singapore, rising two spots to No. 11.

Conor McGregor’s Coach Breaks Down Strategy For Khabib Nurmagomedov Fight

Conor McGregor’s coach sounded off on the strategy for his perceived fight against Khabib Nurmagomedov.

One of Conor McGregor’s coaches has sounded off on the strategy for a fight against Khabib Nurmagomedov.

Longtime striking coach Owen Roddy believes the approach to the challenge of Nurmagomedov will remain much the same as in previous fights as they will look for holes that they can pick apart and find a game plan in order to beat the current lightweight champion.

“We all sit down, and we look at where the holes are and what we can do to exploit the opponent,” Roddy told MMAjunkie. “Khabib brings a lot of problems, as do all fighters. But he’s not bulletproof. It’s not an impossible code to crack.”

“You just have to see where those openings are and put the shots in,” he said. “So that would be my role. Obviously, we would be bringing in a wrestling coach, and (McGregor head coach) John (Kavanagh) would be working the overall game and jiu-jitsu game.

“It’s another day at the office. It’s great fun fighting these different opponents that bring different threats. It’s always exciting to try to come up with a game plan to beat them, and that’s what we do. We try stuff. If it works, we keep it. If it doesn’t work, we get rid of it.”

“If the people kick up enough fuss and get behind that fight, I think it will happen,” Roddy said. “Conor will fight the person that brings the biggest draw. That’s the way he’s always fought. If it is Khabib, that’s the next fight. But I don’t know yet.”

McGregor has not been seen in the Octagon since at UFC 205 in November 2016 when he won the lightweight title from Eddie Alvarez. McGregor then fought in a boxing match with Floyd Mayweather.

Just last month, the first glimpse of him sparring since his boxing bout surfaced online. McGregor wanted to show off his skills to his fans. Since that time from when he competed last, he has stayed in the gym.

Obviously, his edge against Khabib will be in the striking department, and Roddy sees no issue with landing them on the undefeated Dagestani grappler if and when the fight does happen:

“There are always openings, whether you’re a wrestler or a kickboxer or jiu-jitsu guy,” he said. “The fight always starts standing, so there’s always opportunities to land strikes, and everybody leaves openings. I’m sure we can land shots on Khabib – most definitely.”

DJ Jackson had another successful night on the mats, this time winning BOA Super 8

DJ Jackson defeated hometown favorite Craig Jones to win $20,000 Australian dollars.

Team Lloyd Irvin standout, DJ Jackson, traveled halfway across the world and faced off against stiff competition but he walked out of BOA Super 8 as the champion and $20,000 AUD richer. Jackson defeated the local favorite, Craig Jones, in the final match of the tournament.

Both Jackson and Jones tore through the tournament, bringing together a finals match that features two very decorated and experienced grapplers. In what was an interesting strategy, Jones pulled guard at the start of the match, electing to take the penalty point in belief that he would be able to snatch a submission or get points of his own. Jones has submission wins over the likes of Jake Shields and Murilo Santana, so it’s understandable why he would take that option.

But he was unable to find the answer to defeat Jackson, who is known for having an excellent base game on top and the wrestling abilities needed to take down anyone in the sport. Jackson was able to keep his hips low to prevent Jones from creating any space through elevation – which is a key component to his ability to create offense. At the same time, Jackson was able to remain active enough in the position as he frequently attempted to pass Jones’s guard, but was unable to successfully get past his knee shield defense.

Jackson was able to fend off all of Jones’s attacks, including a kimura which looked threatening at one point. Jackson’s strategy and skill set served him well throughout the event. Other than Jones, none of the other competitors were able to stop Jackson from taking them down, passing guard then attacking their arms. In fact, Jones was the only individual who was able to keep Jackson within a guard and prevent him from scoring points.

The event featured an eight-man tournament that brought out some big names along with lesser-known talent across the competitive grappling landscape. Along with Jackson and Jones, James Brasco, Philippe Pomaski, Stuart Cooper, Sami Baki, Roberto Frias and Ben Hodgkinson were a part of the showcase.

Four superfights were also a part of the BOA Super 8 event. Dean Liebenberg defeated Uros Culic via a penalty points. Livia Gluchowska defeated Tegan Krarup via kneebar to heel hook combination. Thalison Soares defeated Mikael Yahaya via bow and arrow choke. Pasha Stolyar defeated Thiago Stefanutti via decision when their bout ended in a 2-2 tie.

BOA Super 8 will be available for replay on FloGrappling.com.
