In Hidalgo, Texas on Saturday night, No. 10 middleweight Derek Brunson handed ninth-ranked Uriah Hall his first stoppage loss in his nearly three-and-a-half years with the UFC. It took Brunson less than two minutes to drop Hall with a big left hook and finish him off with lefts before referee Herb Dean stopped the fight.

The round opened with Hall closing the distance on Brunson, who tied him up and reversed him against the cage. They grappled on their feet and exchanged there briefly; Brunson landed a good knee to the body, but Hall managed to escape. The reprieve was short-lived. It was soon after that Brunson landed the hook that led to the finish.

Hall was visibly displeased with the stoppage, latching onto Dean’s leg and throwing a punch at nothing immediately after Dean called the fight.

Hall, who reached immediate notoriety with his highlight-reel knockout of Adam Cella with a spinning hook kick on The Ultimate Fighter, came into this fight following a decision loss to Robert Whittaker.

Prior to that, he got another impressive finish with a knee and punches TKO on Gegard Mousasi and a TKO of Oluwale Bamgbose. He also has wins over Chris Leben and Thiago Santos. Hall has only been finished once before, by Chris Weidman in Ring of Combat back in 2010.

It seems like every time Hall fights, there’s some question about whether it’s his last chance to prove himself as a contender. With his uneven performances and this decisive loss, reestablishing himself as a legitimate threat in the middleweight division will require multiple, consistent and dominant showings. Hall’s record moves to 12-7.

Brunson racked up his fifth consecutive win and fourth straight KO/TKO finish. He has just three losses in his 19-fight career, his last being a third-round TKO at the hands of Yoel Romero in January 2014. It’s also his only loss in the UFC.

With his run of dominant fights and finishes, Brunson has earned higher-ranked top-10 opponents in a lead up to a title eliminator; while many of them are already booked, Whittaker or the winner of Romero vs. Weidman are solid potential fights for Brunson.

If the winner of Romero/Weidman is next up for a title shot, the winner of Jacare Souza vs. Luke Rockhold is one of the only other fights to make for him at this point. He now sits firmly in the top 10 with a record of 16-3 and 75 percent of his victories ending in a finish.

The UFC lightweight division has a new title contender in Michael Johnson.

It didn’t take long for Johnson to show the world he means business in this division, knocking out Poirier after 95 seconds.

Johnson’s win makes the lightweight division’s outlook even murkier, as the likes of Khabib Nurmagomedov, Rafael Dos Anjos, Tony Ferguson, and even Conor McGregor are all in contention for a fight with champion Eddie Alvarez.

While Dos Anjos and Ferguson’s bout on November 5 will eliminate one fighter from immediate contention, the UFC has a lot to think about over the coming months and in particular, what they’re going to do for the UFC 205 card in New York.

Results

Chas Skelly defeated Maximo Blanco via submission (anaconda choke) 0:19 of Round 1.

Islam Makhachev defeated Chris Wade via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28).

Roan Carneiro defeated Kenny Robertson by split decision (30-27, 28-29, 29-28).

Evan Dunham defeated Rick Glenn by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27).

Derek Brunson defeated Uriah Hall by TKO (strikes) 1:41 of Round 1.

Michael Johnson defeated Dustin Poirier by KO 1:35 of Round 1.

Chas Skelly makes history

Skelly and Blanco both came out their respective corners looking for a flying kick, but it was Skelly who connected with Blanco’s stomach, knocking him to the floor and immediately taking his back.

In what was the fastest finish via submission in the UFC Featherweight Division’s history, Skelly has proven himself to be a better fighter than he showed the last step he stepped into the Octagon in a loss against Darren Elkins in UFC 196.

With the finish, Skelly improves to 16-2 (5-2, UFC) and may be in the position to command a Top 15 fight by the end of the year.

Evan Dunham welcomes Rick Glenn to the UFC

There wasn’t a spectacular knockout or submission in this bout, but it was a fight to the bell between Dunham and Glenn.

It was the first time in Glenn’s career that he made the walk to the Octagon on Saturday night, and he certainly earned himself more fights in the foreseeable future with the way he stood up and took shots.

For Dunham, it was a solid win against a well-respected opponent and it will be interesting to see if he can command a Top 10 fight the next time he signs up to fight. He’s now on a four-fight win streak since his knockout loss to Edson Barboza back in 2014.

The Brunson hype train will not stop

While the stoppage may have come a little early, it was clear Brunson had the edge on Hall and the finish was inevitable.

Hall seemed aware and able to fight once referee Herb Dean separated them, but Brunson was still landing bombs on Hall and had him in mounted position on the ground. With the victory, Brunson is now on a four-fight win streak that has seen the 32-year-old fighter knock out his last four opponents in the first round.

While Brunson was calling for a title shot after the fight, there are a lot of other fighters in the middleweight division in front of him, so he may have to wait his turn and fight a Top Five opponent to solidify his claim to the title.

The main event of tonight’s (September 17, 2016) UFC Hidalgo saw top-ten lightweight contenders Dustin Poirier and Michael Johnson do battle. It was an abbreviated affair.

The southpaw Johnson began by sticking and moving on the outside. The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) finalist flicks kicks to the legs and body. A punch from Johnson opens a cut under the right eye of Poirier. “The Diamond” isn’t pulling the trigger much.

A Poirier punching combination is met with heavy fire from Johnson that backs Poirier off. Poirier lands a leg kick. Punching combinations fail to connect for the most part. Poirier throws a right hook, straight left, and a right uppercut, fails to connect cleanly with any of them, and is met with a flush right hook to the jaw from Johnson.

Poirier crashes to his back, and Johnson pounces. A barrage of punches follows from “The Menace”, forcing referee Dan Miragliotta to intervene. Johnson comes up giving the Johnny Manziel money sign with both hands.

After walking to his corner, Johnson walks back over to Poirier and raises his arms as he stares down at his fallen foe.

The Final Result: Michael Johnson def. Dustin Poirier by KO at 1:35 of Round 1.

Welterweight grapplers Roan Carneiro and Kenny Robertson kept the action coming at UFC Fight Night Hidalgo tonight (September 17, 2016) on FS1.

Robertson came out with his trademark awkward movement featuring twitchy head movement. He backs Carneiro toward the cage, and they clinch up. “Jucao” reverses and drags Robertson to the mat, but the American escapes back to the feet. Robertson throws a body kick and eats a right hook to the face in return. The welterweights briefly clinch, and Carneiro pulls down Robertson’s head to feed him a knee. The two wing wild punches but fail to connect.

The former Eastern Illinois wrestler flicks out a few kicks but doesn’t land. He continues to stalk Carneiro and lands an overhand right. But not a lot of offense is landing on either side. “Jucao” attempts a spinning back fist but it is blocked. Robertson again pushes his foe back toward the fence, but Carneiro fends him off with two hard kicks and a glancing punch. Robertson is using his lead hand to paw, back Carneiro up, and line up a power punch, but misses on a haymaker. A few combinations partially land for Robertson, and the Brazilian hits a hard leg kick as the round ends.

Robertson again opens with pressure to start round two, but is struggling to find the mark. Carneiro connects with a good straight right but fails to follow up. The two exchange leg kicks. Carneiro finally counters the forward movement of the American by changing levels for a takedown. Robertson sweeps the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt, and settles into half guard. He grinds with elbows and punches to the body.

“Jucao” nullifies most of the offense, but Robertson continues to threaten with strikes and advancements. Carneiro gets an angle and briefly fishes for a leg lock, but Robertson quickly escapes. This time he settles into full guard. Carneiro is reaching up and grabbing his own leg to stall, but then uses the position to sweep directly into mount. The American grips his hands behind Carneiro’s back to break his posture, and the Brazilian fails to land much of note during his minute in dominant position.

The striking continues to look sloppy at the start of round three, but Carneiro is having success countering Robertson. A Carneiro takedown is immediately reversed by Robertson, and the two return to a standing position. Robertson continues to pressure, but his tricky movement is largely gone and his punches are coming slowly.

Carneiro has success countering, but fails to land something significant enough to deter his opponent. Midway through the final round and Carneiro is getting the better of the punching exchanges, but Robertson is staying in his face. The former D-1 wrestler is wearing it a bit after eating a stream of “Jucao” jabs. He stays on the offensive though. With 30 seconds left Carneiro goes for a takedown but gets stuffed. The two wing punches as the time ticks away, but hit mostly air.

Final Result: Roan Carneiro def. Kenny Robertson via Split Decision (30-27,29-28,28-29).

The main card of UFC Fight Night Hidalgo kicked off tonight (September 17, 2016) with a featherweight duel. Former Velazuelen wrestling champion Maximo Blanco battled hard-punching grinder Chas Skelly.

There would be no grinding this night.

The Tokyo-based Blanco is known for charging out of his corner and blitzing in the first round. It was “The Scrapper” Skelly though who sprinted out of his corner at Blanco. He threw a jumping front kick and was met from one from Blanco as well, but it was Skelly’s who landed with the more forceful impact. The kick knocked Blanco to the mat, and as he tried to rise, Skelly immediately began setting up a front choke. In the ensuing scramble, Skelly first threatened with a guillotine but transitioned to a D’Arce choke. Within seconds, Blanco was unconscious. The win gives Skelly the fastest submission in UFC/WEC featherweight history.

Final Result: Chas Skelly def. Maximo Blanco by submission (Anaconda choke) at 0:19 of Round 1.
