UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor is in unfamiliar territory in terms of weight at UFC 196, but he has his eyes on Robbie Lawler’s prize….

From salads to steaks has been the story of Conor McGregor’s trip to 170 pounds, where he finds himself facing a new opponent in the form of Nate Diaz at UFC 196. The original headline bout was set between ‘The Notorious’ and Rafael dos Anjos for the Brazilian’s lightweight championship, but the fight got scrapped when RDA suffered a broken foot in training. Diaz was sewn in to the card on 12 days notice, in a situation that echoes the run up to UFC 189 featuring Jose Aldo and Chad Mendes.

So the pairing of the Stockton bad boy and the Irish fan favorite seems to be a match made in heaven, but the fight carries some serious risks for both men. For starters, Diaz being in on short notice had raised questions about his fitness, but the recent images of the younger Diaz bro training for a marathon brought back the legitimacy of this fight to an agreeable level.

Obviously it will take a lot more than being in shape for a fight against ‘The Notorious’ to be a successful one, but a performance like Diaz pulled off against top contender Michael Johnson would be a good starting point. We know the gameplan in the striking with Diaz, it’s stay on the outside but not give enough opportunity for McGregor to get a rhythm. Whether Diaz is able to implement that is another story. As far as the ground game goes, getting this one to the mat ASAP might be a better road to victory for Nate.

We’ve talked a lot about what’s next for McGregor after this fight, and he was asked that very question after his UFC 196 open workout last night (Wednesday March 2, 2016) in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Nate Diaz threatens to slap ‘bitchass’ UFC employee, who promptly apologizes for picking Conor McGregor

It started innocently enough.

UFC commentator Jon Anik was so confident that Conor McGregor was going to knockout Nate Diaz in the first round of their UFC 196 headliner, that he told podcast pal Kenny Florian he would get a “209” tattoo on his forearm if “Notorious” lost.

As expected, that didn’t sit well with Diaz.

John Anik should keep his bitchass opinion to his self #uwillsoonbeslaped https://t.co/HvFXOHWnGX pic.twitter.com/VJcbQ2XYGX

— Nathan Diaz (@NateDiaz209) March 2, 2016

Hey, he’s just following the example set by his brother Nick.

Not long after the tweet, Anik responded with an apology and insists there was more to the conversation surrounding this Saturday night’s (March 5, 2016) pay-per-view (PPV) event in Las Vegas, Nevada.

@NateDiaz209 Massive fan of yours. Was a lot more to what was said. Sorry for my comments and any misunderstanding. Not at all my intention.

— Jon Anik (@Jon_Anik) March 2, 2016

In case you weren’t aware of how deadly the open-hand bitch slap can be, just ask Khabib Nurmagomedov.

Nate Diaz says he might take a thrashing from Conor McGregor at UFC 196, but the Stockton product is willing to go out on his shield.

Not many are expecting Conor McGregor vs. Nate Diaz to go the distance at UFC 196. Diaz is known for his brawling style and McGregor can end a fight in an instant with his sniping left hand.

Both men will collide in a welterweight bout on March 5th, which will mark McGregor’s 170-pound debut, and Diaz says there’s a possibility he could get “murked” when the cage door closes.

The Stockton product was brutally honest in a video uploaded by TMZ on Tuesday (h/t MMA Fighting).

“I think you should beat everybody on your worst day, but you can never be ready enough for a fight anyway,” Diaz said. “Might get murked. Don’t care, though. It’s all good. Or he might.”

The 30-year-old has only been knocked out once in his MMA career and has been credited for his iron chin and mental toughness. Diaz’ corner threw in the towel after Josh Thomson landed a devastating head kick and unloaded a flurry of ground-and-pound at UFC on FOX 7.

Conor McGregor was originally supposed to challenge Rafael dos Anjos for the lightweight title in his pursuit to become the UFC’s first-ever simultaneous two-division champion, but the Brazilian was forced to pull out of the bout due to injury. Diaz was selected as the last-minute replacement and the former lightweight title challenger wishes he had more time to prepare.

“It would have been nice to get a camp,” Diaz said. “It’s all good, whatever. I’ve went to camps, trained hard and fought like sh*t. Three weeks later, after eating as much as I want, hanging out, not doing nothing, came in and whooped everybody’s ass in the gym anyway. So we’ll see what happens.”

The UFC 196 PPV, which will see McGregor and Diaz square off in the main event, takes place on March 5th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

UFC 196 is set to go down this weekend (Sat., March 5, 2016) inside MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

For full “McGregor vs. Diaz” event details click here.

The event will be headlined by a last-minute welterweight fight, as featherweight champion Conor McGregor moves up to 170 pounds to face lightweight contender, Nate Diaz.

Sure, the fight was put together just a few days ago after Rafael dos Anjos bowed out with a foot injury, but McGregor and Diaz wasted no time in hyping up their fight (see how here).

In the co-main event of the evening, Holly Holm will defend her women’s bantamweight title for the first time when she faces Miesha Tate.

Before “Notorious,” Diaz, “The Preacher’s Daughter,” “Cupcake,” and the rest of the participants take care of business inside the Octagon, the talented men and women were on hand in “Sin City” to promote their pay-per-view (PPV) fights by showing off their best moves during the open workouts.

It’s a legitimate question, as the fate of not just one or two, but three divisions could rest on the shoulders of Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz at UFC 196…

The lead up to UFC 196 was marred with injury when Rafael dos Anjos broke his foot training for Conor McGregor and was forced to withdraw from this weekend’s (Saturday March 5, 2016) pay-per-view main event.

Suddenly the card was under serious threat of unravelling and the search for McGregor’s stand-in opponent was on with under two weeks left to fight date. The ironic similarities between UFC 196 and the UFC 189 saga were obvious.

In stepped Stockton bad boy Nate Diaz, and suddenly a battle of trash talkers would headline UFC 196, which, for the most part, has been massively entertaining.

But there was one caveat from the camp of Diaz, as they weren’t willing to cut down to lightweight on such short notice so the fight had to take place at welterweight. A fair enough statement, but the ramifications of this move up of two weight classes for featherweight champ ‘The Notorious’ could be felt in no small amount by three of the UFC’s most popular divisions.

McGregor-Dos-Anjos-Collage[1]

As McGregor makes his 170-pound debut, consider this; how well will his body adapt from being molded to that of a welterweight competitor, to cutting straight back down to featherweight for his next fight?

Probably not very well, and with the original booking of dos Anjos still potentially looming, it’s likely that he’ll be facing the Brazilian lightweight boss in his next fight. For the line of featherweight contenders and the ex-champion Jose Aldo, this is not an exciting prospect.

Frankie Edgar

So already you see the complications for the featherweight class, but what about lightweight?

If you remember, in recent weeks McGregor said he wants to fight Robbie Lawler for the welterweight belt at UFC 200. That statement may not hold weight in the myriad of trash talk going on recently, but remember how he called out the lightweight champion before thumping Aldo, and look what happened there.

So conceivably two divisions could be put completely on hold, as could the top contenders at welterweight if McGregor faces Lawler next, but that could also depend on when dos Anjos is healthy to defend.

And so we come to the crux of the article, what happens if Nate Diaz destroys Conor McGregor at UFC 196?
