Khamzat Chimaev Says People Will Be ‘Scared’ To Fight Him After UFC 267

Khamzat Chimaev

Khamzat Chimaev expects his fellow welterweights will be running scared after he returns to the Octagon against Li Jingliang at UFC 267 this weekend.

‘The Wolf’ burst onto the scene in the summer of 2020, quickly racking up three UFC wins. However, since then Chimaev’s career has come to a standstill as he battled some particularly nasty complications related to contracting COVID-19.

After more than a year out of action, Chimaev is intent on making a statement when he returns to the Octagon. His only worry is that once he beats Li the ranked welterweights will be too scared to fight him.

“I hope so, but I don’t think these guys want to fight with me after this fight,” Chimaev said at UFC 267 media day when asked if he expects a step up in competition after Saturday. “They’re gonna start to be scared again, complain ‘he didn’t fight some of these good guys, blah blah blah,’ things like that. We will see what happens after this fight.”

Khamzat Chimaev Wants Leon Edwards Fight But Doesn’t Want To Jump The Line At 170

Chiamev would love the chance to complete his unfinished business with Leon Edwards. The welterweight duo was booked to fight on three occasions, but the bout fell through each time and the UFC eventually abandoned the fight all together. ‘Rocky’ has since gone on to secure what appears to be a number one contender fight against Jorge Masvidal.

“Of course, I will be happy if they give me somebody like [Edwards],” Chimaev said. “But I think if he wins this fight he’s supposed to fight for the title. How many win streak now? 10, 9? I respect that. I win this fight, win also one, two, three fights more before the title. I don’t want to jump up [past] the guys and have people talk like, ‘This is disrespect,’ I don’t like this talk.

“I want to show who I am. I’m gonna beat all the guys in the top 10, 10 fighters, and I’m gonna become champion.”

Many people believe Li is the toughest opponent of Chimaev’s short career but the man himself is not too sure about that.

“I don’t think so,” Chimaev said. “Last time I fight Gerald Meerschaert, they say, ‘He owns the most submissions in the game,’ always people going to talk that somebody is better than me. I know who I am. I’m gonna go take his head.” (Transcribed by MMA Fighting)

Do you think ranked welterweights will be scared to fight Khamzat Chimaev if he is victorious at UFC 267?

Kevin Holland and Kyle Daukaus were due to run it back after their no contest.

Kevin Holland and Kyle Daukaus fought a strange fight at UFC Vegas 38 earlier this month. The bout featured a nasty clash of heads, which seemed to knock Holland out. However, Holland regained his composure, but only enough to be submitted by Daukaus moments later.

After much deliberation outside the cage it was eventually ruled that the accidental clash of heads dramatically affected the outcome of the fight. Since Daukaus wasn’t at fault the fight was ruled a no contest. Despite the referee’s ruling, Holland said he considered himself well beaten in that fight.

Holland and Daukaus were due to run it back at UFC Vegas 42, which is scheduled for November 13. However, Holland has been forced off the card with an undisclosed injury.

Daukaus took to Twitter to share news of Holland’s withdrawal, wishing his opponent a speedy recovery. Daukaus also said he hoped to meet ‘Trailblazer’ in February.

Holland’s removal from UFC Vegas 42 has since been confirmed by MMA Fighting. That outlet reported that the UFC would prefer to keep Daukaus on the card and are actively seeking a new opponent.

The no contest versus Daukaus marked the third fight in 2021 that Holland had failed to win. His other two fights this year were losses to Marvin Vettori and Derek Brunson.

Those three disappointing results came on the heels of an extremely impressive 2020 where Holland won five bouts inside the Octagon. Those wins included a TKO of Joaquin Buckley, a split decision over Darren Stewart and a bizarre stoppage of Jacare Souza.

Spooky season gets some frightening knockouts, as it should be.

After an exhausting week packed with quality MMA action, we’re back to the fringes with more of the wild, weird, and sometimes impractical.

And we begin with Fight Commentary Breakdowns, with a Bajiquan fighter sparring with a kickboxer. This is a fun one to watch, plenty of back and forth as they are going very easy on each other.

This doesn’t really sit squarely into the “traditional arts vs MMA“ conversation, as it’s not an actual competition. Just two guys flowing with each other and the Bajiquan guy bringing a nice jab and more than might be expected. The mid-range game is where it’s most interesting. It’s good to see.

Dambe’s been warmly received by some of our readers and online followers, which is great. Dambe Warriors has had little action lately, but we’re going to indulge in some of the offerings from their back catalogue.

This was another example of what makes Dambe so great. Tense action, lots of anticipation, explosive payoff. Just stick with it. This one delivers harder than most matches.

This next one is also amazing, it took one well-placed punch to turn the tide, and the follow up shot to a shocking end:

STRELKA is back, though. Not all of it is great, but this was a wild one. A sailor goes against a guy that appears to have legit boxing training. No fairy tale ending here, it goes as it should. You still have to see it for yourself.

And here’s from the vault. One guy doesn’t even have a mouthguard at the start, and there’s a giant inflatable Conor McGregor, because reasons. Scrawny guy takes on Muscles McBrolic and it ends with the shocking realization that this was a terribly irresponsible thing to do.

Sure, you never know how these fights play out until they happen, but come on.

Next, we’re off to Southeast Asia to bring some Lethwei into the mix. Check out this bout from back in January that ends in a manner that is pretty hard to watch. Lots of technique on display here.

Also, here’s a collection of monstrous headbutts in Lethwei matches. Perhaps it’s the fact that we’re used to combat sports where headbutts are verboten, but there’s something incredibly shocking about watching this kind of thing in a fight as a standard attack.

Especially when it’s a string of them one after the other. Seriously, check it out:

We’ll end this with my personal favorite for the week, FIAS’ Sambo throwback to a 2018 bout that was extraordinary.

As a bonus, we’ve also got highlights from this past September. Just marvelous technique on display.

There you have it folks. This Halloween, check your candy and don’t eat your kids’ stash. That’s just mean. And remember – you might think you can fight, but there are many guys like you all over the world.

Claressa Shields is walking away from her first blow of defeat with a lot to think about.

It was less than one full year ago that Claressa Shields made the decision to begin an MMA career and sign with PFL. Roughly seven months after making this life-changing decision, she found herself in the Decagon against a much more experienced adversary in seven-year pro Brittney Elkin. Elkin gave Shields all she could handle in the Olympian’s highly hyped debut, but the never-quit attitude of the Flint, Michigan native was on display in her come-from-behind victory last June.

There was no fairytale ending this time, as Shields dropped a split decision to Abigail Montes yesterday at the 2021 PFL World Championship. Though Shields is encouraged by some of the things she did well in her second pro fight, she can’t help but eke out some residual frustration that her opponent opted to go for the dadgum takedown.

“I did better in there. I did pretty good on the cage,” Shields told ESPN immediately following her loss. “It was always the ground stuff. Gotta get better at defending the takedown and stuff. The game plan was to just do better than my last fight. Of course to win [also], but do better.

“It continues to show us what we need to work on, and I worked damn hard in camp. I knew I would look better. It was the last round that did it for me. She went for the goddamn takedown, and I didn’t respond quick enough.”

As you might have guessed, Shields is already well aware of what is priority #1 when she returns to the Jackson Wink MMA gym in the near future. And in case you were wondering, no, she has no plans of quitting MMA.

“Continue more ground game, continue more training; getting better,” Shields said. “I’ve got two more years left, so it’s not over.”

Do you think Claressa Shields has what takes to rebound from her first MMA loss?
