Michael Page avenged his sole professional loss to Douglas Lima at Bellator 267 on Friday night.

Page and Lima fought a somewhat timid fight. Both men met in the center of the cage, but ‘Venom’ was quick to strike first with a right hand that forced ‘The Phenom’ backwards into the canvas. Lima quickly got up and threw a leg kick that did not hit its target. Page threw another right hand that appeared to stun Lima, who got up again as fast as possible. Lima then took advantage of a missed right hand by Page, secured a takedown and finished the first round in a dominant position.

The second round saw Lima nearly recreate the same finish from their first meeting after a leg kick forced Page down and he followed up with an uppercut that was just inches away from his chin. Page returned to his feet and continued to tag his opponent with right hands. The third round started off a bit slower with Page feinting a lot more and waiting for Lima to move in. He did exactly that, and secured another takedown. Lima punched and elbowed his way to the end of the fight, which was very close. In the end, Page was declared the winner by way of split decision and expressed interest in fighting for the championship next.

Check out Mookie Alexander’s play-by-play of the second round of Douglas Lima vs. Michael Page:

Counter left hook from Lima just misses. Jab gets through for Page. Left hook by Lima misses badly. Not a lot of actual offense happening in this fight. Crowd oohs and aahs a missed combo by Page. Leg kick by Lima catches MVP and almost a deja vu moment because that uppercut could’ve KO’d him exactly like the last time. Flying knee by Page doesn’t amount to anything even with the right hand on the descent. Body kick by Lima. Inside low kick from the former champ. More leg kicks and now a body kick from Lima. Getting into more of an offensive rhythm. Page ducks out of a left hook. Page appears to tag and drop Lima but their bodies collided so don’t know if that’s a clean knockdown. Lima back up quickly again. Spinning kick from Lima. Whiff. 20-18 Lima.

Michael Page and Douglas Lima ran it back earlier today (Fri., Oct. 1, 2021) in the main event of Bellator 267 in London, England. It was a rematch two years in the making which saw Lima score a stunning knockout over “Venom” at Bellator 221.

This time around, however, there would be no knockout and no victory for “The Phenom” after the judges awarded Page a razor-thin split decision victory. Page, as usual, started off quick with his footwork and tried to leap in and out in order to catch Lima with a lightning-quick shot. Being ever-so patient and cautious, Lima evaded pretty much everything.

In round two, we almost had a case of deja vu after Lima dropped Page with a calf kick and swung with the fences on a huge right hand…the same combination he knocked out “MVP” with in the first fight. This time around, though, Page was quick to evade the strike and avoid catastrophe.

The third round didn’t offer a ton of action as both men were very cautious in their attack, though Lima did score a takedown which many felt had secured him the win. Unfortunately for “The Phenom,” the judges felt otherwise.

Page has now won six in a row since losing to Lima in 2019 and put himself in prime position to earn a shot at the Welterweight title, which is currently in the hands of Yaroslav Amosov. As for Lima, the loss is his third in a row.

It’s the biggest win of MVP’s career, but it’s a somewhat controversial one.

Michael Page at long last has a marquee win on his resume, but it’s not exactly one that was memorable for action and one that will be considered controversial.

In front of a partisan crowd in London, the flashy welterweight striker edged out former champion Douglas Lima by split decision over three rounds. Lima handed Page his first and only loss back in 2019 by second-round KO but now MVP has evened the score. Page started brightly with quasi-knockdowns of Lima twice in the opening round off of straight rights. Only one of those two really looked like a clean knockdown and not a case of being off-balance with Page charging forward. Lima had Page on his back for the latter part of round one through a takedown off of a missed MVP right hand. Not a lot of offense was generated from Lima but he got in sporadic ground-and-pound on Page’s head.

Round two saw Page get another potential flash knockdown in the final minute, and again while a punch landed it could’ve been seen as a mixture of the punch and a colliding of bodies that led to Lima going down. He sprung back up again but otherwise it was an all-striking affair with zero serious pace put on by either fighter. Page narrowly avoided a repeat result when he had to dodge the same uppercut off of a leg kick from Lima that felled him in their first matchup.

Page looked to have a good handle of the early part of round three but an easy body lock takedown from Lima kept him rooted to the mat for the remainder of what was frankly a lackluster fight. Many believed Lima deserved the nod but there weren’t exactly many obvious brilliant moments from either fighter to really get worked up about this one. These two combined to average about 7 strikes thrown per minute.

Doug Crosby and Eric Colon had Page up 20-18 entering the final round, whereas Ben Cartilage had it 19-19. All of the judges gave Page the 2nd and Lima the 3rd, so the opening round was the fight decider.

Lima has now unthinkably lost three straight and his offense has been closer to zilch all the way. Page could be line for a title shot against Yaroslav Amosov, and it’d finally be MVP’s first title fight of his Bellator career.

As for the rest of the card, the co-main event saw Leah McCourt notch a win over Jessica Borga in a contest that can best be described as having happened. McCourt is the #5 ranked women’s featherweight contender in Bellator and while she’s not known for striking, this is pretty much how she beat a quickly fatigued Borga.

UFC veteran Robert Whiteford saw his fight with Andrew Fisher end in a no contest after one too many pokes from Fisher proved too much for Whiteford’s eye balls. You honestly could’ve considered this a DQ given it happened three times but this is MMA.

Light heavyweight Luke Trainer put away Yannick Bahiti with strikes, but really it was a clever elbow to the eye that left Bahati collapsing in a heap. A few more punches ended things but it was definitely the elbow that proved to be the real fight ender. The main card opener saw lightweight Tim Wilde win a well-paced fight over Yves Landu in his first fight since November 2019.

The Brazilian bantamweight joins Sarah Alpar, Mike Rodriguez, and Antonio Arroyo among fighters who are making their exit from the world’s largest MMA promotion.

At one point in time Thomas Almeida was one of the hottest prospects in the bantamweight division. Hitting the Octagon at just 24-years-old with an unbeaten 16-0 record, ‘Thominhas’ had built a reputation for high octane violence.

He quickly ran out four straight UFC victories, with three coming by KO to start his Octagon career, before running headlong into the championship rise of Cody Garbrandt. A quick loss to Garbrandt kicked off a prolonged rough stretch for Almeida, who has won just one of five bouts over the last five years. Following a KO loss to Rob Font in 2018, Almeida revealed that he needed surgery to correct increasing vision problems. Recovery from that surgery, along with the COVID-19 pandemic, kept Almeida on the sidelines until late 2020.

The Brazilian last returned to action against another rising star, in former DWCS alum Sean O’Malley on the main card of UFC 260, earlier this year—suffering his third KO loss in the process.

It’s little surprise then, on the back of four straight defeats, that MMA Fighting has confirmed Almeida’s release from the promotion, following his removal from the UFC website. Almeida is joined by light heavyweight Mike Rodriguez, middleweight Antonio Arroyo, and women’s flyweight fighter Sarah Alpar. All fighters’ exit from the UFC has been confirmed.

After years of inconsistent cuts, however, it appears the promotion is once again regularly releasing fighters after ever event or two. With Alpar, Rodriguez and Arroyo all losing their latest bouts just two weeks ago on UFC Vegas 37. Rodriguez dropped a decision to Tafon Nchukwi to take his Octagon record to 2-5 (1 NC), Alpar lost to Erin Blanchfield to bring her to 0-2, and Arroyo suffered a brutal KO loss to Joaquin Buckley, dropping him to 0-3 in the process. Now it just remains to be seen what will shake out of last week’s UFC 266 fight card.
