Was there a war for Diego’s soul waged between Jesus Christ and ‘shaman’ Joshua Fabia?

We’re just a few months removed from the Diego Sanchez / Joshua Fabia fiasco that saw UFC Hall of Famer Sanchez get cut from the UFC after his trainer-manager-guru Fabia got into a fight with UFC management over past medical records.

Upon closer media inspection, many felt that Fabia had an unhealthy amount of influence over Sanchez’s life. After a month of controversy and many wild statements from both Diego and Joshua, Sanchez announced he was cutting Fabia out of his career and life.

Now Sanchez says he’s in a good place, physically and mentally health, and ready to compete in bare knuckle boxing.

“I’m excited to do a new sport, train differently,” he said on an Instagram live video. “And I worked my ass off all these years doing MMA, trying to master and understand the principles of stand up, of striking, of movement, all this stuff. And it’s hard to learn all this stuff when you’re trying to master the grappling, the Muay Thai, master everything all at once. Strength and conditioning, yoga, it’s a massive, massive task, mixed martial arts.”

“So for me at the end of my mixed martial arts career, I trained my ass off for Donald Cerrone, I was ready to get in there and go to war. Because that was going to be my last fight, my big last hurrah into the UFC. And I put everything into that training camp, I was ready to go. And I passed all my medicals, I passed everything. I did MRIs, MRA, I did everything. I’m perfectly fine.”

“And the reason why it ended the way it did with UFC, that has other implications. That’s other stuff, that’s Joshua Fabia and f—king with the medicals and pushing all the wrong buttons at the UFC. Working his ass off to do what was best for his intentions. Not what was best for Diego Sanchez. I believe my mentor was guiding him in what was best for him and what was best for him was to try and figure out a way to get a settlement with the UFC.”

“He knew that if there was a major settlement with the UFC that I’d hook him up with half cuz it was all his idea, his planning, his mastermind and everything. And I made the mistake of following a mentor that I thought had a stronger connection to God than me. And it is a story of biblical measure that people are not ready for. A spiritual warfare type of story. Maybe I write the script and I do the movie some day, but it’s a real life thing, man.”

“I was always a strong Christian my whole life,” Diego said later. “Jesus Christ was my love, and by Jesus’s stripes I was healed, and by Jesus’ stripes I was protected, by the blood of Jesus I was protected. These were my beliefs, these were my core value beliefs. And Fabia came in with the shamanism and a whole different … like I said, it was a spiritual, biblical story of biblical proportions.”

“I will get into it sometime, but it ain’t gonna be free and it ain’t gonna be on Instagram. It’s going to be with a profession that understands mental manipulation, a psychologist or something.”

It didn’t sound like Sanchez had completely thrown out everything Fabia had taught him during their time together. He still expressed confidence in Fabia’s coaching over their two years together.

“People can talk s—t about Fabia all day, but man, that f—ker was a bad ass trainer and I learned a lot from him, man,” Sanchez said. “And people are gonna see. They’re gonna see what I learned when I step into that BKFC. Because everything we did for the last two years was no gloves. You saw the viral video of me upside down getting hit. I wasn’t hurt, but I’m all good. I’m where I’m at. I got good people around me. And the only thing that is my mentor, the only thing that is my guide is the holy spirit. I have re-found my faith in Jesus Christ.”

As for Sanchez and the UFC?

“Me and Dana, we’ve been talking,” Sanchez revealed. “We’re cool. He told me ‘I’ve got nothing but love and respect for you, Diego Sanchez.’ So in the future, I’d like to meet up with Dana and give him a handshake and tell him thank you for everything the UFC did for me, giving me all these great opportunities. If I didn’t have the UFC, I wouldn’t have been able to build the brand that is Diego Sanchez’s legacy.”

“With the Diego Sanchez legacy now, taking the shift to Bare Knuckle boxing is … gonna be intense, it’s gonna be extreme. And that’s what I’ve been, I’ve always been intense and extreme.”

Now we just have to wait for Bare Knuckle FC to complete their own run of medical testing on Sanchez before he can compete for the organization. We’ll keep you in the loop on how that goes, for better or worse.

Paige VanZant discussed her struggles with mental health in her latest video blog.

Former UFC headliner and Dancing With The Stars finalist Paige VanZant has not had an ideal start to her career as a bare knuckle fighter. Since joining BKFC on the heels of her release from the UFC last year she has gone 0-2 with losses to Britain Hart and Rachael Ostovich.

Recently VanZant uploaded a video where she candidly discussed her “mental state” in the immediate aftermath of her most recent loss. After that decision loss to Ostovich at BKFC 19 in July VanZant swiftly left the ring and did not stick around for any post-fight media.

“When I walked out of the ring, I didn’t just walk to my locker room, I literally walked all the way outside and I just went and cried in the parking lot by myself,” said VanZant (ht MMA Fighting). “I said some things to my husband that are pretty terrible about like my mental state.

“I told him I didn’t want to live anymore, that this wasn’t for me anymore. Like life wasn’t for me anymore so I was disappointed, It was hard.”

Soon after these initial feelings of disappointment VanZant found the resolve to post some defiant messages on social media, stating that she would come back from these defeats. Despite feeling like she’s capable of turning the tide in her combat sports career, VanZant did confess to feeling a burden stemming from negative perceptions of her and her abilities.

“I’m bummed out, bummed out to say the least,” she said. “Everyone expects me to lose and everyone expects me to fail. I don’t know, I just feel like people have this specific perception of who I am and especially online. It’s crazy how much people can hate on a single person. I just don’t get it.

“I pride myself of being a good person. I think that’s the most important thing for me. I never talk bad about my opponents. I never say a single negative thing about their character. You never know what somebody’s going through. You never know what someone’s on the verge of.”

VanZant also revealed that she feels she needs to start taking her mental health “more seriously”, adding that “mental health is no joke”.

VanZant’s combat sports career started out in 2012, with appearances on the Texas regional scene. In 2013 she signed with Invicta FC and debuted with a loss to Tecia Torres. After a win on the regional circuit she signed for the UFC in 2014.

She started her UFC tenure with three straight wins, including submissions over Kailin Curran and Alex Chambers and a unanimous decision over Felice Herrig. In 2015 she headlined against current UFC strawweight champion Rose Namajunas and lost via submission.

VanZant rebounded from that loss with a sensational switch kick KO against Bec Rawlings. After that win she lost to Michelle Waterson by submission. VanZant would then sit out, due to injuries, until returning in 2018.

In 2018 she lost to Jessica-Rose Clark. A broken arm forced another long period on the sidelines for VanZant. She returned in 2019 and defeated Ostovich with an armbar. In 2020 she suffered an armbar loss to Amanda Ribas in what would be her last fight with the promotion.

VanZant signed a multi-fight deal with BKFC later that year. In a recent interview BKFC President Dave Feldman claimed he was still very much in the Paige VanZant business. However, he revealed that his most prized acquisition was now in a ‘must-win’ situation.

Jorge Masvidal has been talking about a late 2021 return against “anyone that gets me to the title again,” a pretty big ask considering he’s just been defeated by the current 170-pound champion Kamaru Usman (twice), and “Nigerian Nightmare” doesn’t look like he’s going anywhere.

But, on the plus side, there are interesting bouts out there for “Gamebred,” and in a recent public appearance Masvidal threw out two potential names that we’re very interested in seeing happen.

Speaking at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas, Masvidal answered a fan’s question on who he’d fight next, saying, “I don’t know man, s—t. Durinho’s calling me out. If we can make it pop with Durinho, Leon, any one of these guys that gets me closer to the belt. I don’t care how many fights I have to.”

Gilbert “Durhino” Burns was quick to respond to Masvidal’s call out, saying he was more than happy to fight in November or December.

Edwards hasn’t bothered to post anything on his Twitter since last week, but you know he’s been hoping to avenge that “three piece and soda” incident for a long time. Here’s what he said back in July about a potential fight with Masvidal:

So what do you think, Maniacs? Who would you like to see Masvidal fight next?
