A light heavyweight championship matchup between incumbent best, Jan Blachowicz and current middleweight kingpin, Israel ‘The Last Stylebender’ Adesanya finally has a date nailed down.

According to tonight’s report from ESPN MMA reporter, Brett Okamoto via UFC president, Dana White – Blachowicz is slated to attempt the first defence of his throne as he draws Adesanya at UFC 259 on March 6 — with a location or venue for the matchup still yet to be determined by the promotion.

Tonight’s announcement puts the brakes on recent big winner, Glover Teixeira’s hopes for an immediate title shot following his third-round rear-naked choke win over compatriot, Thiago ‘Marreta’ Santos earlier this year.

Claiming the championship in the co-main event of UFC 253 in September, former KSW titleholder, Blachowicz met with UFC 247 challenger, Dominick ‘The Devastator’ Reyes for vacant gold, where he managed a second-round knockout in spectacular fashion.

Taking main event honours on that ‘Fight Island’ card was the aforenoted, Adesanya. Scoring the second successful defence of his middleweight reign, the City Kickboxing ace stopped top-contender, Paulo ‘The Eraser’ Costa also in the second-round after a masterful striking display.

Adesanya is set to remain king of the middleweights despite his move to 205-pounds in March coming, with reports recently suggesting the promotion may look to book former champion, Robert ‘The Reaper’ Whittaker and the aforementioned, Costa in a matchup in the early goings of 2021, with possible interim spoils up for grabs.

For Blachowicz, the knockout win over Reyes came as his fourth consecutive victory and second of 2020, following a rematch success over Corey Anderson at UFC Fight Night Rio Rancho in February. Prior to that, the Pole bested former world champions, Ronaldo Souza and Luke Rockhold, the latter via a highlight-reel knockout.

Nigerian-Kiwi superstar, Adesanya knocked back recent Bellator MMA signing, Yoel ‘Soldier of God’ Romero at UFC 248 in March of this year, in a rather forgettable unanimous decision win over five-rounds to score his first successful title defence.

Nurmagomedov may sound like he’s entirely done with fighting, but the rematch between Khabib and McGregor is still at the forefront of Dana White’s mind, should McGregor beat Poirier at UFC 257.

Conor McGregor may have a dangerous bout with Dustin Poirier out ahead of him, and Khabib Nurmagomedov may never fight again, but that doesn’t mean that the idea of a rematch between the two men doesn’t still carry a lot of intrigue for fans and the UFC alike.

So much so that it seems to be one of the major pieces of the puzzle with which Dana White hopes to lure the ‘Eagle’ back into the Octagon. Nurmagomedov surprised even his own AKA teammates, following his submission victory over Justin Gaethje back at UFC 254, when he announced his sudden retirement from competition. In the months since, White has painted a confident picture of his ability to negotiate the Dagestani champ back into the fold. And in a recent guest appearance on the SHOUT! Buffalo Football Podcast, White gave his vision for what an ideal future would hold.

“When I fly out there (to ‘Fight Island’), Khabib is going to be there, too. I’m going to meet with Khabib while I’m there,” White said of his upcoming meeting with Nurmagomedov (transcript via MMA Junkie). “In a perfect world, if Conor wins this fight, I’d love to see the rematch with him and Khabib. It’s the biggest fight that can be made, and it’s the fight that makes sense.”

Nurmagomedov and McGregor first fought back at UFC 229 in October of 2018, in the first defense of Nurmagomedov’s title—which had previously been vacated by the Irishman due to inactivity. Nurmagomedov submitted McGregor with a neck crank in the fourth round of their bout, which was followed by a massive brawl instigated by Nurmagomedov and members of his entourage.

However, despite the continued bad blood between the two men – and the potential money to be made – Nurmagomedov has never sounded particularly invested in the idea of rematching McGregor. Speaking to TMZ back in February, Nurmagomedov made it clear that he feels any serious talk about fighting McGregor again wouldn’t be because people thought a second bout between the two men would be any more competitive.

“They just want to see drama,” Nurmagomedov said of fan interest in the fight (transcript via ESPN). “If you ask people who’s going to win, 99% is going to say Khabib, like he did the first time, right? But people want to see a big drama show, only for this one. If we talk about money, this is good. If we talk about drama, this is good. If we talk about real lightweight contender or real lightweight championship fight, this is not good. This is not a real lightweight championship fight. But if we talk about drama and money, of course this is good.”

Even just earlier this month, Nurmagomedov joked that the only way the promotion could lure him back would be with a fight against the now departed boxing legend Muhammad Ali. Nurmagomedov vs. McGregor 2 may be the perfect fight for Dana White, but if Nurmagomedov sees it as a worthwhile goal he’s certainly hiding it well.

For as much as Daniel Cormier can’t seem to stand Jon Jones on a personal level, the former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) champ-champ has always been complimentary of his rival’s skills. And now that “Bones” is moving up to Heavyweight, “D.C.’s” opinion’s of Jones as a fighter haven’t changed.

According to “D.C.” — who knows a thing or three about fighting at both Light Heavyweight and Heavyweight — Jones has not only deserved the right to fight for the title straight away, but he’s proven than he will be very successful at 265 pounds.

“I think he’s gonna get a title fight,” Cormier told SCMP MMA via BJPenn.com. “And I don’t see anything wrong with that. I think for all he’s accomplished over the course of his career, if anyone is deserving of an immediate title shot it’s Jon Jones.”

“I do believe when he gets to heavyweight and he’s competing there, he’s gonna be very successful,” added Cormier.

“I’ve competed with the guy on a couple of occasions and felt him and seen him and experienced his skill level, and I do believe that with the skill he possesses, with the fighting style, and honestly the guy is smart, he’s a very smart fighter in there. I think he can take that and it will translate to him being successful at heavyweight.”

Indeed, Jones defeated Cormier on two occasions, though his win at UFC 214 was overturned to a no contest (NC) after “Bones” failed a post-fight drug test.

For now, the current plans are to have current UFC Heavyweight champion, Stipe Miocic, rematch Francis Ngannou sometime in March of 2021 with the winner facing Jones later in the summer.

Thompson Edwards

There could have been a possibility of fans getting to watch Leon Edwards vs. Stephen Thompson next month.

Thompson is coming off an impressive unanimous decision victory over Geoff Neal in the UFC Vegas 17 headliner earlier this month.

While he pretty much outclassed Neal over five rounds, Thompson wasn’t able to come out unscathed. He suffered a cut on his face due to an accidental headbutt while he also injured his leg in the fourth round which led to swelling above his kneecap.

“Wonderboy” was clearly in pain but managed to ride it out in the final round to come away with the unanimous decision victory.

For now, he’s waiting on an MRI to determine the nature of the injury as well as how long he will be sidelined.

“I get an MRI on it tomorrow,” Thompson told MMA Fighting on Wednesday. “We’ve got to see what kind of tear it’s going to be. I think I have a quad tear. Hopefully it’s just a muscle and not the tendon. If it’s a tendon, I’ll have to have surgery. I couldn’t come out of that fight unscathed. Come on!

“… I had two cuts on my face that are pretty much healed up. I have the cut from the head butt that is healing up nicely, and I’m still gimping around on my right leg. After the fight, we took the nieces and nephews to Disney World, and I had to be pushed around in a wheelchair for the first two days. After that, I was like, ‘Listen, I’ve got to get moving around on this thing.’ I’m still gimping around on it, teaching karate classes.

“We’ll find out hopefully tomorrow or the next day what the damage is, and hopefully, it’s not that bad and I’ll get back in there.”

If Thompson did come out unscathed, however, he would have considered stepping in to face Edwards.

Edwards was set to battle Khamzat Chimaev in the UFC’s January 20 headliner only for the latter to pull out due to lung issues from a positive COVID-19 test.

“Wonderboy” was initially looking to fight Edwards as well before settling on Neal. Fate had other ideas, though.

“He was who I was shooting for to begin with,” Thompson said. “Of course, he was not having it. I’m not really sure what happened with Khamzat, but I would have loved to stepped out there and fought him for sure.

“But at this point, with the injury and stuff, it doesn’t look like it’s going to happen but I would love to have faced him. That would have been awesome.”

However, even if he was fully healthy, it would also depend on his coaches given the short notice.

“The last thing I want to do is to be able to have that quick turnaround and not feel good about it,” Thompson added. “Of course, I’m sitting here injured and I’d love to sit here and say that I’d do it but that’s why you have coaches to make sure that you’re 100 percent before you do that.”

Hopefully, Thompson won’t be on the sidelines for too long.

Did you want to see Thompson vs. Edwards? Or would you prefer them facing different opponents?
