UFC Fight Night Felder v Dos Anjos: Weigh-Ins

Another last-second cancellation has left UFC Vegas 14 with nine total fights tonight (Sat., Nov. 14, 2020) live on ESPN+ from inside UFC APEX in Las Vegas, as a catchweight bout between Jose Quinonez and Louis Smolka has been removed from the main card.

This is according to a recent report by MMA Junkie’s John Morgan, who says UFC officials informed media members of the change just moments ago. The cancellation is due to yet another health issue stemming from Friday’s weigh ins (watch HERE), which saw Smolka weigh in three pounds over the bantamweight limit.

This news come just hours after it was revealed that middleweight contender Eryk Anders was removed from his main card clash with Antonio Arroyo due to weight cut issues. As a result of both fight cancellations, UFC Vegas 14 will now move forward with just nine bouts.

Quinonez, 30, was hoping to return to the UFC win column after getting steamrolled by Sean O’Malley back in March. The former Ultimate Fighter: Latin America runner-up is just 2-2 since the start of 2018 and really needed this win entering 2021. It is unknown at this time if Quinonez will be able to find a fight before year’s end.

Smolka, 29, is coming off a submission loss to Casey Kenney back in May. The former flyweight standout has gone just 2-2 since his return to 135 pounds two years ago and was hoping to end 2020 on a good note. Fight fans were excited for this matchup as “Da Last Samurai” has finished his last seven professional wins.

The next big boxing match will go down later tonight (Sat., Nov. 14, 2020) live on ESPN from inside MGM Grand Conference Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, as reigning WBO welterweight champion Terence Crawford (36-0, 27 KOs) takes on English veteran Kell Brook (39-2, 27 KOs) in the main event.

With Vasiliy Lomachenko losing to Teofimo Lopez Jr. last month (highlights HERE) this is a prime opportunity for Crawford to add another name to his undefeated resume and prove he’s the best pound-for-poundboxer in the world today. It won’t be easy though, as Brook is a former champion riding a three-fight win streak.

Crawford, 33, is undoubtedly one of the best fighters in the game. Since defeating Jeff Horn back in 2018 to claim the WBO welterweight title Crawford has gone on to defend the strap three times, including a sixth-round TKO victory over Amir Khan last year. This will be Crawford’s first fight on Vegas soil since defeating Horn over two years ago.

Following the conclusion of tonight’s UFC Vegas 14 card (results HERE) many fight fans will be switching over to watch the “Crawford vs. Brook” main card. Check below for full viewing details:

RDA Feels Blessed For Felder Fill-In, Says ‘Card Would Have Been Scrapped’

There was a moment when Rafael dos Anjos thought he wouldn’t fight this weekend at UFC Vegas 14, but Paul Felder eventually stepped up on short notice to save the lightweight main event and the entire ESPN+ card.

dos Anjos, who will be fighting at lightweight for the first time sine 2016, was originally expected to meet surging contender Islam Makhachev in the headliner. Unfortunately, Makhachev had to withdraw from the event one week ago due to staph infection, leaving the entire card in doubt.

Felder, who hasn’t fought since a split-decision loss to Dan Hooker back in February, stepped up on just five days notice to put all the pieces back together. In turn, this helped RDA stay on the card and prevented any further cancellations.

“We heard that if our fight didn’t happen, the whole card would have been scrapped,” dos Anjos told Combate. “It was a huge responsibility. Everyone is in quarantine. Times are hard for everyone. A lot of people are expecting this money and to work. All that responsibility fell on my lap, pretty much. I want those guys to fight. It was a blessing that Paul Felder took the fight, a higher-ranked guy. Makhachev is a southpaw and a wrestler, Felder is orthodox and a striker, so things changed a little. But a fight is a fight and everything will work out.”

RDA was offered a few different opponents to step in for Makhachev but nothing seemed to push the needle for the former UFC champion. Dos Anjos was hoping to square off with newly-acquired lightweight contender Michael Chandler, but ultimately settled with Felder.

“I arrived in the USA two weeks before the fight. Sunday night, my manager called to tell me that Islam was out of the fight, I couldn’t believe it. It took me a while to process it. Then the negotiation started. Lots of people offering themselves for the spot. We were looking for the best option. They asked me if I could fight at welterweight. I was already below 170 pounds, so I couldn’t really take any welterweights like that. I’ve been training, I want to show I’m back at lightweight and I still have the skills to win the lightweight belt again. So I wanted to fight at lightweight.”

“I had the idea to send a tweet to Michael Chandler. He didn’t fight three weeks ago (when Chandler took the replacement spot for UFC 254, in case Khabib Nurmagomedov or Justin Gaethje withdrew from the fight). He’s always posting pictures and videos, so I thought ‘that’s our guy’. He’s always in shape, too and writing some catchphrases like ‘Always be ready’. Then he said he had other plans and that’s when the UFC offered me Paul Felder. That’s a fight we were already trying to book back in August. My weight wasn’t really doing that well back then, so it didn’t work. Then they offered me Makhachev again after a while, but I’m fighting Paul Felder on Saturday.”

Dos Anjos, 36, hasn’t tasted victory at 155 pounds since knocking off Donald Cerrone to defend his UFC lightweight title five years ago. This is an extremely important fight for RDA as the Brazilian veteran has turned in a dismal 1-4 record since the start of 2018. Another loss would put the former champion in serious limbo entering next year.

While dos Anjos was preparing for the wrestling and pressure of Makhachev he now has to deal with the striking of Felder. It’s a switch that the veteran fighter should be able to make, but it will create new dangers come fight time. We’ll have to wait and see if RDA can make a triumphant return to lightweight or if “Irish Dragon” will step in on short notice and steal the show.

UFC Vegas 14 will unfold later tonight (Sat., Nov. 14, 2020) live on ESPN+ from inside UFC APEX in Las Vegas, Nevada. The card has suffered multiple cancelations and will feature 10 total fights.

‘El Cucuy’ Is Coming, Calls For Chandler At UFC 256

Tony Ferguson is ready to return to action and fight newly-acquired lightweight contender Michael Chandler this December.

Ferguson, who hasn’t competed since losing to Justin Gaethje via TKO back in May, took to social media early Saturday to angle for a fight with Chandler. Remember, the two lightweights were already linked to a potential pairing, but “El Cucuy” wasn’t interested in facing the former Bellator MMA champion.

Looks like Ferguson has changed his mind and is now trying to secure a bout with Chandler this December at UFC 256.

“Time-2-Rise” #D’arceKnightRises … Again. Lets Close out 2020 In Style. Michael Chandler you Putz, Ya Asked For It. #AddedToTheListBish’ December,” wrote Ferguson.

Fight fans have been calling for this matchup for the past month so it’s nice to see both parties finally interested. The UFC 256 card, which just lost Amanda Nunes vs. Megan Anderson, is currently being headlined by a bantamweight scrap between UFC champion Petr Yan and top contender Aljamain Sterling. Adding Ferguson vs. Chandler would be a tremendous addition to the card and a great way to close out a difficult 2020 campaign.

Ferguson, 36, had his ridiculous 12-fight UFC win streak snapped at the hands of Gaethje back in May. The loss knocked “El Cucuy” out of another potential booking opposite Khabib Nurmagomedov, who defeated Gaethje at UFC 254 to retain his lightweight title. Knocking off a fighter like Chandler will right the ship for Ferguson entering 2021 and put him right back in the title mix.

Chandler, 34, has yet to make his UFC debut after signing with the promotion back in September. The Bellator MMA legend did serve as a backup for Khabib vs. Gaethje at UFC 254 but never got his chance to step inside of the Octagon. If Chandler were to debut against Ferguson and win in memorable fashion he would have to be considered for a UFC lightweight title shot.
