MMA is the last thing that people think of when watching the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade…until now.

The floats at the parade encompass a wide variety of movies, shows and other things in pop culture. They range from Bart Simpson, to the Pillsbury Doughboy, to Spider-Man.

However, one aspect of society that isn’t catered to in the parade (and will almost certainly never be) are MMA fans.

So, if we were given a choice, what MMA-fighter floats would we like to see at the parade?

Mauricio “Shogun” Rua is a legendary fighter in MMA history, but that’s just it. He’s legendary in history, not the present.

This is not to say that Rua isn’t a good fighter.

Rua has looked dramatically better since his abysmal UFC debut against Forrest Griffin, in which he was choked out in the third round after a truly terrible performance.

He eventually managed to capture the UFC light heavyweight title from Lyoto Machida (some would say he beat Machida twice) and many nostalgic Pride fans thought that the true king of the light heavyweight division had returned to the throne.

There was only one thing they didn’t anticipate—Jon Jones.

Current UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones challenged “Shogun” for the title and outclassed him; the fight wasn’t even competitive.

Rua rebounded with a quick victory in a rematch against Forrest Griffin. He was then put against Dan Henderson in a fight that will be remembered for ages.

Despite staggering the granite-jawed Henderson on multiple occasions and having mount on Henderson throughout almost the entire fourth round, Rua was on the wrong side of a decision.

Does this mean that “Shogun” is naught but a gatekeeper?

No, it doesn’t. Rua isn’t a gatekeeper but he’s not a title contender either (as long as Jon Jones is anywhere near the belt).

He occupies a peculiar role in the division. He can beat most fighters in the division (or at least be competitive against them) except for the champion.

He’s more than a gatekeeper, but less than a contender.

Ryan Bader may have dominated Jason Brilz, but this doesn’t mean that Bader is a top-echelon light heavyweight.

The NCAA Division-I wrestler burst onto the scene on the eighth season of The Ultimate Fighter reality series where he won the light heavyweight portion of the tournament. After that, he instantly became a hot prospect at light heavyweight.

But did he deserve this status at all?

Bader’s victories in the UFC were over Vinny Magalhaes, Carmelo Marrero, Eric Schafer, Keith Jardine and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira (also known as Lil’ Nog). Four of those men departed from the UFC at some point after losing to Bader (although Schafer would eventually return).

After beating gatekeepers and an overrated “legend” in Rogerio Noguiera, there was talk of Bader being the next big thing at light heavyweight.

He was therefore paired up with the other next big thing, Jon Jones.

Jones made short work of Bader and got the MMA world questioning just how good he was.

If Jones got the world asking about Bader’s questioning abilities, Tito Ortiz confirmed these notions by stumbling Bader with a short right hand and then choking him out.

After this fight, Bader was considered a glorified can.

Fortunately for him, he was given a chance at redemption against Jason Brilz. Bader was simply too much for Brilz and he won by TKO.

Bader was seemingly “back.”

But does this mean that Bader is one of the best in the division?

Hardly. Bader has yet to beat anyone of real talent. Until then, he’s just an average fighter at light heavyweight.
