One of the biggest fights of the year in mixed martial arts takes place on Thursday night when Jose Aldo fights Manny Gamburyan for the featherweight champion of the world. But the fight that could be the most significant bout of the year will happen a few hours earlier on the same World Extreme Cagefighting card, and it will be largely overlooked and maybe not even shown on the television broadcast.
That fight features China’s Zhang Tie Quan stepping into the cage to take on an American named Pablo Garza, and it represents a major opportunity for American MMA to break into the Chinese market.
Every American company is intrigued by the possibilities of expanding into China, and Zuffa (parent company of the WEC and UFC) is no different. And while it’s not realistic to think Zhang could do for MMA what Yao Ming did for basketball, Zhang knows that if he succeeds on the American stage, he could have a huge impact on the growth of the sport in the world’s most populous nation.

Melvin Guillard beat Jeremy Stephens Saturday at UFC 119 in a split decision that didn’t have a whole lot of action, and that left the fans in Indianapolis booing.
UFC President Dana White, who had hyped the Guillard-Stephens bout as a barn-burner, took to Twitter during the fight to admit he had been wrong about that. It just wasn’t a particularly entertaining performance from either fighter.

In a battle of a 37-year-old former UFC lightweight champion and a 28-year-old who may be a future champion, it was the veteran Sean Sherk who walked away with a split decision win over Evan Dunham Saturday at UFC 119.
The fans in Indianapolis booed the decision in a very close fight that could have gone either way, leading Sherk to complain in the Octagon afterward.
“The crowd wants to boo? We just came out here and put on a great performance for you guys,” Sherk said. “You guys should be happy.”

Chris Lytle out-boxed Matt Serra for 15 minutes Saturday night at UFC 119, winning a unanimous decision in a fight that consisted of little more than Lytle and Serra standing in front of each other and trading punches.
The bout was a rematch of Serra’s victory over Lytle in the Ultimate Fighter 4 Finale four years ago, and Lytle said this time the fight went exactly the way he wanted it to go.
“I just wanted to do the fight different from last night,” Lytle said.

Former Ultimate Fighter winner Ryan Bader earned the biggest victory of his MMA career Saturday at UFC 119, beating Antonio Rogerio Nogueira by unanimous decision.
The bout may set Bader up for a showdown with Jon Jones, in what would be a match-up of the two best young fighters in the light heavyweight division. If Jones is next for him, Bader will need to be better than he was Saturday night against Nogueira.
