Paul Daley wasn’t quite the spectacular power puncher he’s been hyped as in his fight Saturday night against Jorge Masvidal at Shark Fights 13, but he did enough to earn a unanimous decision victory in a close fight against a game Masvidal.

Daley, best known for getting kicked out of the UFC after sucker-punching Josh Koscheck following their fight in May, earned the 25th win of his career against nine losses and two draws, but it wasn’t easy, as Masvidal secured several takedowns and was never badly hurt by Daley’s striking.

“Masvidal is a tough guy,” Daley said afterward. “He had a great game plan in mixing up his strikes with his takedowns.”

Former UFC stars Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou and Houston Alexander gave the fans in Texas a great fight Saturday night at Shark Fights 13, with Sokoudjou badly hurting Alexander in the first round, only to have Alexander come back and win by technical knockout in the second.

At the start of the fight it appeared that Sokoudjou would finish Alexander easily, as Sokoudjou knocked Alexander around and had him badly hurt on the ground. But late in the first round Alexander surprisingly turned the tables on Sokoudjou, got on top of him on the ground, and actually appeared to be the fresher of the two fighters by the end of the first.

Keith Jardine is now on a five-fight losing streak.

Jardine, the former Ultimate Fighter contestant who rose through the ranks to the point where he was fighting in main events on pay-per-views in the UFC, was fighting in the main event on a much less prestigious pay-per-view — Shark Fights 13 — on Saturday night. But he couldn’t get past Trevor Prangley and lost a split decision.

“It’s never satisfying to beat a guy like Keith when he’s down on his luck and trying to make his comeback,” Prangley said afterward.

Antonio McKee promised to shed the “boring” label on Friday night, and he delivered.

McKee, whose tendency to grind out decisions had turned him into the best fighter no one wanted to watch, needed just three minutes, 11 seconds to defeat Luciano Azevedo on Friday night’s Maximum Fighting Championships card. McKee controlled Azevedo on the ground as he does to most of his opponents, but instead of lying on top of him, McKee kept striking and eventually delivered a brutal elbow to Azevedo’s forehead, opening a huge cut and ending the fight.

“I guess you can teach an old dog new tricks,” the 40-year-old McKee said after the fight.

LATE UPDATE: A day after this was published, DirecTV changed course and decided not to offer Shine Fights on pay-per-view.

We have a weird weekend in mixed martial arts ahead of us, with two different pay-per-view shows even as the UFC is sitting the weekend out. But if you’re a DirecTV subscriber, you have only one fight card available to you: DirecTV is offering Friday night’s Shine Fights event, but not Saturday night’s Shark Fights show.

DirecTV has decided not to give its customers the chance to purchase the Shark Fights card, which is headlined by Keith Jardine vs. Trevor Prangley. Unsurprisingly, Shark Fights is disappointed.

So much for that.

A day after we noted that DirecTV, alone among major carriers, had chosen to offer Friday night’s Shine Fights pay-per-view card but not Saturday night’s Shark Fights card, DirecTV has changed course.

With Shine Fights’ event moving from a sanctioned show in Virginia to an unsanctioned show on a tribal territory in Oklahoma, DirecTV decided not to offer Shine Fights anymore.
