Don’t look now, but the UFC is returning to Fox this weekend with a seemingly mediocre card. Though many fans will look at the glass half empty, as I did by calling the card mediocre, I am looking to this card with a half-full attitude.
The card features former champions Mauricio Rua and Lyoto Machida and other top contenders. The card promises to entertain with a number of fighters who rarely disappoint.
Here are the power rankings of each fight on the card.

It appears that Shane Carwin‘s coaching staff is complete for the upcoming American season of The Ultimate Fighter.
TUF 16, which will feature 170-pound welterweights this season, will be coached by newly minted rivals Carwin and Roy Nelson. Nelson is a former TUF winner, which makes this much more interesting for the one-time contender of the show.
Carwin’s staff consists of several coaches. His “lead” instructor will be Trevor Wittman, who currently runs Grudge Training Center, home to the former interim heavyweight champion.
In terms of specialty coaches, Carwin has hired UFC heavyweight Pat Barry as a striking coach. The former K-1 level kickboxer is well known for having some of the heaviest leg kicks in MMA.
Newly crowned Strikeforce welterweight king Nate Marquardt, who trains at Grudge, has also been brought on as a coach. It is assumed that he will be a jiu-jitsu instructor, as he holds the rank of black belt.
For wrestling, in addition to Carwin, Leister Bowling has been brought on board to share his vast experience with the sport. Bowling is a three-time All-American in wrestling, as well as a four-time NAIA Central Region champion at the University of Southern Colorado and Dana College.
Bowling is no stranger to the sport of MMA, as he does hold one amateur MMA fight, which came back in 2005. The sport must have not been for him, as he now is a full-time wrestling coach.
Finally, Carwin chose Loren Landlow to handle the physical therapy and sports performance aspect of the team. Landlow is a former football player who has worked closely with Carwin in the past.
In addition to the announcement of his team, Carwin bashed several potential candidates that Nelson is rumored to have contacted.
The first of which is Victor Conte, the man connected with distributing steroids to some of Major League Baseball’s biggest stars. Though clean and operating legitimately now, Carwin still made it a point to point out his legal past.
Also, former Olympian Kurt Angle was mentioned by Carwin as a possible coach. Though Angle is a legitimate wrestling legend, Carwin pointed out his several brush-ups with the law, which include several DUIs.
The feud is heating up and the pieces are falling into place. What do you think of Carwin’s coaching staff? Sound off below!

UFC 152 is the first major event to be headlined by 125-lb. flyweights. The fight takes place between former bantamweights Joseph Benavidez and Demetrious Johnson, and will crown the first UFC flyweight champion.
Looking ahead of the historic event, there is not a clear contender at this point. There are only 14 current flyweights in the UFC with either one or even no flyweight fights to their name.
Currently signed as 125-pounders are Johnson, Benavidez, Chris Cariaso, Ian McCall, John Dodson, Louis Gaudinot, Josh Ferguson, Darren Uyenoyama, Tim Elliott, John Lineker, Yasuhiro Urushitani, Jussier da Silva, Ulysses Gomez and John Moraga.
Moraga is set to fight Gomez at UFC on Fox a week from Saturday. Urushitani and Lineker, who are both coming off losses, will square off at UFC 151 in September. Elliott, Ferguson and McCall are all coming off losses as well, with McCall earning his loss to title challenger Johnson. Da Silva has not fought, nor is he scheduled yet, in the UFC, though he is considered a top-five flyweight in the world.
Two recent winners, Dodson and Cariaso, should be seen as the front-runners for the first title defense in history. Either one of them would not upset me if they were chosen to be the first challenger.
Cariaso, who has spent almost his whole career at bantamweight, is 5-2 under the Zuffa umbrella. His only two losses come to top bantamweights Renan Barao and Michael McDonald.
Among his wins are decisions against Vaughan Lee, Takeya Mizugaki and Ferguson, which was his flyweight debut. In said flyweight debut, Cariaso looked to be a legitimate threat at 125, as he dismantled a tough fighter in Ferguson.
The other man I would most likely give the nod to is Dodson. A winner of The Ultimate Fighter as a bantamweight, Dodson has spent a good part of his career outside the UFC as a flyweight. He has seen a good amount of success in that time.
A gifted striker, Dodson has looked astonishing thus far in his UFC tenure. He won the TUF with a brutal knockout of T.J. Dillashaw. He followed that up with a flyweight victory over Elliott, which was fought tough and took a toll on his hands.
Many want to see da Silva get the next shot, but as Hector Lombard proved, if you are an outsider, you must earn your spot in the UFC.
Therefore, Cariaso and Dodson must be considered front-runners. If they have time to wait until the title shot, I would think squaring them off in a No.1 contender’s bout would be logical.

One of the biggest jokes leading into UFC 148’s fight between ChaelSonnen and Anderson Silva was a joke made by Sonnen about Silva and his wife. The joke had to do with Silva’s wife making Sonnen a medium-rare steak and another action having to do with Sonnen smacking her on the behind.
It was a joke that was often brought up in interviews. Silva even made the remark in the post-fight interview with Joe Rogan that, although Sonnen had been very disrespectful to Silva, he would like to have the brash American over for a barbecue.
Fast-forward to within the past two weeks, when Dana White stated that Fox loves Sonnen and want to work with him further. Initially, the first thought that came to my head was, “Okay, they want Sonnen to be an analyst and to work on the Fox pre-fight shows.”
But then I got to thinking more. How great would it be if Fox had an hour special where Silva cooked out with Sonnen and discussed an upcoming event like the eventual UFC on Fox 5?
Not only would it check the cookout off the list that Silva said he would like to have with Sonnen, but it would be an absolute ratings draw that could involve legitimate back-and-forth between the champion and former challenger.
Now, I know what you’re thinking. You’re probably saying, “Riley, you are crazy. This would never happen. There would be too much risk for a fight breaking out or Sonnen disrespecting Silva or his family further. Insert typical Bleacher Report writer bashing here.”
While I agree that I am a little touched in the head and there is the risk of a confrontation or disrespectful talk, Sonnen is more of a professional than you think. Given the circumstances of this potential event, which I completely thought of on my own, I think Sonnen would have his usual humor, while respecting his former opponent for the time slot.
I mean, just picture it. The two men are discussing a matchup, and when that discussion concludes, someone walks up to Sonnen and hands him a steak. He cuts it open and it’s medium-rare, just how he likes it.
That reaction would be pure gold and would continue a joke that has garnered much attention.
Further than that, the segment may ease some of the burn that Sonnen has caused to not only Silva, but the Brazilian community. Seeing the former enemies sharing some food, offering insight on fights and showing mutual respect could be big for ratings, huge for the sport and therapeutic to the rift caused by two fight build-ups.
I think it can be done. I think it can be successful. Remember, this is a wild, out-of-right-field idea that will likely never happen.

UFC on Fuel 5 will take place in England and is one of the upcoming cards I am most excited for. It might not be made up of blockbuster names, but it promises to provide great fights between entertaining fighters.
In particular, the middleweight showdown between Brit Tom Watson and Ultimate Fighter veteran Brad Tavares looks to be a barnburner. Both men are exciting fighters that will both give the fans what they want to see.
Here is a rundown of the matchup between the two men.
