Robbie Lawler is set to put the welterweight championship on the line in a hyped clash against Carlos Condit at UFC 195 on Saturday night. While it may not turn into a technical masterpiece, there should be no shortage of action or intensity.

Lawler is coming off his first title defense, which was a brawl with Rory MacDonald that lasted into the fifth round. If Saturday’s battle with Condit comes anywhere close to the same level, it should be a highly entertaining finish to the card.

Let’s check out all of the important viewing information for the latest showcase. That’s followed by the weigh-in details and a main event preview for what should be a terrific start to 2016 for UFC.

Preview and Comments

Lawler and Condit are fighters who don’t mind getting caught up in a slugfest. In fact, they tend to thrive in chaotic situations and only become fiercer when they are challenged aggressively. That creates a recipe for a memorable encounter Saturday night.

The challenger admitted leading up to the fight that he’s still a little bit rough around the edges but believes that’s actually helped his popularity among the fans, as noted by Brett Okamoto of ESPN.

“The consensus I’m getting is that this fight is going to be an amazing display of mixed martial arts ability—and violence,” Condit said. “I feel like that’s one of the reasons I, personally, have a fan following. I’m not super polished. Things don’t always go my way in the cage. But no matter what, I’m trying to finish.”

On the flip side, after the fight with MacDonald, Lawler fully understands how much damage can come from trying to use such a high-risk, high-reward style. He’s aiming for a quicker resolution as he attempts to defend for the second time, per Lance Pugmire of the Los Angeles Times.

“You don’t want to have to showcase your warrior spirit or how much heart you have in [every] fight,” Lawler said. “You want to go out there and you want to be sharp and you want to execute your game plan and…get it done fast. Every fighter wants to…take the least amount of damage possible.”

Ultimately, when you have fighters with the ability to finish the fight in the blink of an eye, it creates a situation where a first-round result wouldn’t be a surprise. But most fans are probably hoping for a little more action after Conor McGregor knocked out Jose Aldo in 13 seconds in the last marquee bout.

Reed Kuhn of Fightnomics provided numbers to further illustrate why hopes for this matchup are so high:

Based on his comments, it’s clear Lawler will attempt to set the pace early. How Condit is able to defend those early attacks, while also trying to counter with some significant strikes of his own, should be telling about how the fight will go.

Nick Baldwin of BloodyElbow.com is among those who has high expectations:

While it’s impossible to know what the next 12 months will hold, there’s a good chance Lawler and Condit are going to set a high bar in the Fight of the Year conversation just two days in.

All told, this is a toss-up fight in every sense of the term. You could argue the champion holds a slight advantage because he went through a similar bout last time out and managed to survive, but the edge either way is minimal.

That’s great news for anybody without a rooting interest. Expect plenty of fury and at least a couple of moments that find their way onto the year-end highlight reel, regardless of who emerges with the belt.

Main Event Preview

Aldo and McGregor have been on a collision course for a long time, so it should be a treat for MMA fans to finally get to see them square off. The intrigue is only bolstered by the fact that neither fighter has a clear advantage heading into the fight.

These are two superstars who are used to winning and typically doing it in dominant fashion. That’s why there are so many questions about what will happen in Saturday’s high-profile clash.

ESPN Stats and Info spotlighted their respective runs of success:

They are both versatile fighters with the ability to wear down an opponent. The biggest factor could very well end up being who’s able to set the pace. McGregor will likely set a more up-tempo fight, giving him a chance to use his power, while Aldo wants a more technical battle to keep the Irishman at bay.

Of course, “The Notorious” is extremely confident, in large part because of what he’s seen out of Aldo. Lance Pugmire of the Los Angeles Times passed along the interim champion’s thoughts about the longtime title holder.

“I see a man who’s ready to go home,” McGregor said. “It’s hard to say it any clearer than that. He wants to go home. It’s over. He’s ready to put it in the past. I guarantee he will be smiling and happy and full of energy when the fight is done because it will be a relief off his shoulders.”

Those type of comments tend to provide a little extra motivation for his opponent, but McGregor has always backed them up during his rise to the top of the division.

ESPN highlighted a tension-filled stare down at the weigh-in, which further illustrated the reason there’s so much interest in the bout:

Ultimately, there really isn’t a result that would be overly shocking. The fight, as the odds show, could go either way. And it wouldn’t be a surprise to see a rematch between the two in the relatively near future, regardless of who comes out on top Saturday night.

That said, look for McGregor‘s power to emerge as the difference. Aldo is coming off an extended layoff from the Octagon due in part to a rib injury. McGregor should use the potential rustiness of his opponent as a chief reason to push the envelope early, and that will help him walk out as the champ.

Card Predictions

Aldo vs. McGregor Preview

Aldo was originally slated to defend the featherweight title against McGregor back in July before suffering a rib injury. His extended absence, which stretches all the way back to last October, allowed the outspoken Irishman to become interim champion with a victory over Chad Mendes.

Now, at long last, the two superstars are ready to square off.

McGregor loves to talk. He’s one of the top fight salesman in all of combat sports, and it’s allowed him to become a top draw relatively quickly since his arrival to UFC. He certainly hasn’t changed his approach despite the high-profile nature of his meeting with Aldo.

“The Notorious” made it clear he’s confident his preparation has him ready for anything the champion does inside the Octagon, as noted by Lance Pugmire of the Los Angeles Times:

I’ll be a ghost. He will chase me and I’ll not be there. Jose falls into the same patterns. He moves the same. He kicks and punches the same. It’s repetition. He does the same thing over and over. He’s too predictable.

There’s a subtle brilliance to those remarks. Not only is he talking himself up, but he’s also planting a seed of doubt in Aldo’s mind that could force him to attempt things outside of his comfort zone in an effort to surprise the interim champ.

McGregor has never faced somebody with the all-around ability of the Brazilian, though. Aldo has a wide-ranging skill set that’s allowed him to control a bout regardless of his opponent’s approach, which is why he’s remained the titleholder for so long.

Reed Kuhn of Fightnomics provided some advanced metrics to illustrate how close the matchup is:

One other factor is whether Aldo will be able to showcase top form right away after such a long layoff. If he does, the door is open for the bout to become an instant classic because the numbers suggest neither fighter has a distinct advantage.

McGregor must come out as the aggressor. He must attempt to push the pace early to land a couple of significant strikes to test Aldo. How the champion responds to that early pressure will dictate what happens in the rest of the fight.

One thing’s for sure: It should be a terrific atmosphere inside MGM Grand Garden Arena as the fight so many fans have been waiting on finally arrives.

A battle between Jose Aldo and Conor McGregor to crown the undisputed king of the featherweight division is the headline bout of UFC 194 on Saturday night. The anticipated clash has generated plenty of hype over the past couple weeks.

Chris Weidman will also put his belt, the UFC Middleweight Championship, on the line at the event against Luke Rockhold. The two title fights set the tone for what has the potential to become a memorable night of action.

Let’s check out the entire group of fights slated for the Las Vegas showcase. That’s followed by predictions for the fight-night bonuses and a preview of the main event.

Bonus Predictions

Main-Event Preview

Aldo, who hasn’t entered the Octagon since last October, was originally scheduled to face of with McGregor in July. A rib injury forced him to back out of that matchup, and the Irishman defeated Chad Mendes in the meantime to take control of the interim belt.

It’s an intriguing unification bout because they are each fiery competitors who should put on a quite a show once that opening bell rings. Of course, any fight involving McGregor has garnered added attention in recent years as he’s perfected the art of selling himself and his bouts.

Aldo is trying to make sure he doesn’t get too caught up in the outside stuff, though. Damon Martin of Fox Sports passed along comments from the champ, who’s trying to treat the situation as normally as possible despite his budding rivalry with McGregor.

“Every fight the biggest fight of my career, the next one is always the biggest one, so I’m looking at this one as the biggest fight in my career because it’s the next one,” Aldo said. “To me he’s just the same. I’ve fought a lot of the top fighters out there, and to me he’s really just another opponent that I have to go in there and beat.”

Of course, once the fight starts, all of the words fade into the background and the only thing that matters is which fighter executes better.

Rust is certainly a potential factor for Aldo. He was on such a roll before the extended layoff that it’s tough to imagine him stepping into the Octagon and simply picking up where he left off. And that’s not an ideal situation against a powerful, aggressive fighter like McGregor.

So the early pace will be crucial. “The Notorious” will want to come out and immediately put Aldo to the test with some early body shots just to see how he responds. The more strikes he’s able to land in the first round, the tougher it will be for the longtime champion to get back in form.

EA Sports UFC provided a teaser of a fight simulation, with the bout now also having the added benefit of the winner getting put on the cover of the next UFC video game:

This fight is particularly difficult to forecast because it’s tough to know exactly what to except from Aldo. If he can immediately get back to where he was before, he holds a slight edge. But McGregor is ready to pounce on any weakness in his return.

The interim title-holder can’t try to do too much, though. He’s been waiting for this fight for a long time and the most common mistake is going for the quick knockout. He needs to bring some heat early but not overextend himself to the point where it’s easy for Aldo to wear him down as the fight goes on.

Ultimately, the uncertainty simply adds another layer of intrigue to an already hyped encounter.
