Former UFC strawweight Angela Magana is in a coma.

According to Angela Magana’s coach, Gabriel Lamastus, the former UFC fighter fell into a coma after undergoing emergency surgery for severe back pain.

The 35-year-old slipped into a coma on Tuesday shortly after posting on social media that she was “about to be put in a gown and cap for surgery.”

Magana, who has three children, is currently located at University Hospital in San Juan, Puerto Rico, per Simon Samano of MMA Junkie.

Roughly 14 hours after Magana posted that she was about to undergo surgery, the following message was posted on her social media accounts:

“Message from Coaching Staff there have complications (sic) and they can not wake her up. They are trying many options we will keep you up to day. Thank you for the out pouring (sic) of concern and love #TeamLaPerla # ”

According to Magana’s coach, Lamastus, a series of back complications led to the former Ultimate Fighter contestant being diagnosed with a chronic case of Cauda Equina, which required immediate surgery.

“She’s in a coma, and we’re waiting to hear some positive news,” Lamastus, who was at the hospital with Magana, said. “The surgery went fine. The problem was anesthesia. It’s very rare that patients react bad to anesthesia, but it does happen, and I guess this is one of those rare cases. But I’m being positive. She’ll be fine, and she’ll wake up. She’s a fighter. I’m just staying positive.”

Shortly before she underwent surgery, Magana posted in a video on Twitter that she felt she wouldn’t wake up and was going to die. Her aunt died a few years ago after suffering a bad reaction to anaesthesia.

“I feel like I’m gonna not wake up and die after this,” she tells someone out of frame.

Magana, who went 0-3 during her stint in the UFC, was released from the promotion after her knockout loss to Amanda Cooper in 2017. ‘Your Majesty’ was hoping to snap her losing streak in an upcoming bout with Kyra Batara at “Combate 35: Reinas” on April 26 in Los Angeles.

Coach Lamastus also says Magana was looking to represent Puerto Rico in next year’s Olympic wrestling tournament in Tokyo, Japan.

“She’s a hard worker. Angela is a very, very hard worker,” he said. “A lot of people only know the Angela from social media. They don’t really know the real Angela. That woman busts her tail to provide for her family.”
