Tyson Fury’s father, John Fury, wants his son to ditch his corner team after his performance against Otto Wallin this past weekend.
John Fury, the father of Tyson Fury, has criticized his son’s performance, and that of his team, after his fight this past weekend against Otto Wallin. Fury defeated Wallin by unanimous decision (116-112, 117-111, 118-110) this past Saturday night, however that outcome doesn’t paint a picture of the actual bout itself. The Brit suffered a huge cut in the third round that raised fears the fight would be waved off, but Fury’s cutman did an excellent job of managing the cut in between rounds and the fight went the distance.
Talking to BT Sport after the fight, Fury’s father was not a fan of Tyson’s performance, saying ‘The Gypsy King’ never even landed a “meaningful punch” in the whole fight.
“I don’t know how he has taken the cut in the third and made it to the 12th,” Fury Sr. said. “It has gone terribly wrong in the camp and someone is to blame. Tyson never landed a meaningful punch. If Tyson had been in front of one of the top-three, or Alexander Povetkin, he would not have won. I am a straight talker and that is the worst I have ever seen him.
“I have half an idea what went wrong but I cannot share it,” he continued. “He has done an eight-week camp but his strength and power have gone. He was as weak as a kitten. His body looked a lot softer tonight. He is not an 18 stone fighter, he wants to be body beautiful. I have seen this coming. I saw this coming. If he keeps hold of that team, that whole team, they will cost him his career. Ben Davison and everyone.”
Soon after Fury’s father’s comments, Tyson’s head coach Ben Davison responded by downplaying the fact that Tyson was “weak” in the fight.
“John is Tyson’s dad so of course you have to respect him,” he said. “But Tyson was fully prepared and you can’t do anything about sustaining a bad cut. Just because he’s gone 12 rounds it doesn’t mean he’s weak. If he was weak he wouldn’t have been able to do 12 rounds there.”
Fury is expected to rematch Deontay Wilder, if “The Bronze Bomber” gets past Luis Ortiz later this year, in February 2020.
