mma_expo_logoPress Release – May 5, 2011 – VANCOUVER –Mixed Martial Arts Expo comes to Vancouver, BC on June 11-12, 2011 at the prestigious Vancouver Convention Center for the first time ever. Featured on the show floor is an action-packed, multi-style amateur martial arts tournament, the West Coast Combat Championships. Four individual tournaments showcase Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, No Gi Grappling, WKC Continuous Sparring and Mixed Martial Arts styles of competition.

All tournaments take place on the show floor in front of a large audience of MMA Expo visitors and celebrities with competition designed specifically for amateur martial artists who want to showcase their martial arts in a safe and controlled environment. With youth divisions for ages 6 to 12 as well as teen and adults categories for male and female competitors, the West Coast Combat Championships will be one of the largest martial arts tournaments held in the province.

“We have a reputation for hosting quality tournaments under the MMA Expo umbrella; well-attended tournaments thoroughly enjoyed by competitors and spectators alike”, says Gerald Chopik, president of MMA Expo. “We also believe that young, rising talent need an opportunity to shine. For that reason most categories are designed for competitors with 3 years or less experience. Winners of each division receive gold, silver and bronze medals.”

Chopik goes on to say, “For seasoned individuals, this tournament also offers BJJ and No Gi Absolute Divisions open to all amateur adult male and female competitors regardless of years of experience. These divisions are sure to attract some of the most talented competitors on the West Coast with winners being awarded an MMA Expo Championship Belt.”

Competitions begin Saturday with the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and No Gi Grappling divisions featuring exciting throws and ground wresting competitions. Saturday morning comprises all the BJJ categories (with Gi uniform) with the No Gi divisions held in the afternoon.

Sunday morning hosts WKC Continuous Sparring, a fast-paced style that limits competitors to kicking and punching only. The afternoon tournament highlights the very popular open-style category of Amateur Mixed Martial Artists. All divisions feature a round-robin format guaranteeing amateur competitors multiple matches and therefore the best possible opportunity to showcase their martial arts skills.

“The sport of martial arts has certainly evolved over the past few years and the community has come to expect well-organized competitions”, adds Chopik. “MMA Expo will deliver two exciting days of on-the-mat action for Vancouver-area martial artists and fans.”
