MMA SQUARED: Cowboy won FOTN 3x THIS YEAR, might win a 4th soon

As some of you know I am illustrating a book called The Year in Fighting: 2019 and Donald Cerrone already turns up in it three times. Here’s a look at some pivotal moments.

Cerrone opened up the year with a Setting Sun vs Rising Star matchup against Alexander Hernandez. The young upstart came out guns blazing and continually ran right into Cerrone’s trademark stepping knee.

Next, Cowboy put an absolute beating on Al Iaquinta. Rewatching this fight I assumed the image would be of the front kick Cerrone landed. That was gorgeous, but then at the end of the fight, while stalking Iaquinta he points to his son and attempts a fight ending salvo. All the tropes and memes about dad-Cerrone came true.

The momentum was cut short when Cerrone ran into the buzz saw that is Tony Ferguson. While we were denied a satisfactory ending due to his TKO doctor stoppage, the fight that did play out was violent and relentless.

Justin Gaethje collects performance bonuses as often as the Korean Zombie: every time he fights. Statistically speaking, he and Donald Cerrone will be cashing an extra check or two.

Take care of yourself and I’ll talk to you tomorrow.
