Video: Jake Shields ‘Stockton Slaps’ grappling opponent

Jake Shields competed to a draw against A.J. Agazarm at Polaris 3 on Saturday and an incident broke out between the two after the match.

UFC veteran and current WSOF fighter Jake Shields competed against A.J. Agazarm in the co-main event of Polaris 3 in Wales. Although he dominated the contest, the match resulted in a draw.

Shields and Agazarm talked a lot of trash leading up to the grappling-only match and the animosity continued after the match was over. Agazarm went to shake Shields’ hand, but Shields refused and was pushed by Agazarm, causing him to throw the infamous ‘Stockton Slap.’

“This guy was talking crap the whole time, gouging my eyes,” Shields said in his post-fight interview. “I just had my eye gouged for the first time in my life my last fight and now you got this prick doing the same thing. He was bragging yesterday, ‘I’m gonna try and make it a draw, I’m gonna try to make it a draw. I know I can’t beat you, but if I can make it a draw I’m gonna consider that a win.’ Well, congratulations A.J. You’re a b-tch. How does it feel to be a p-ssy and get your draw?”

Afterwards, this is what Agazarm had to say in an Instagram post:

Competition doesn’t build character; it reveals character… and all of you saw Jake’s character revealed tonight… As a member of the grappling community, I apologize for Jake Shields’ behavior… Jake, I know I’m speaking for everyone here when I call upon you to apologize for your unsportsmanlike behavior, and to admit you were wrong…. Your “easy night” didn’t end in victory. I didn’t stall or run. I came right at you and you couldn’t deliver so apologize to the grappling community, be a man. To the fans, Polaris is vibrant! They are revolutionizing the sport and getting it done. They are working for the community! There’s a reason why I’m here and you can count on me to always stand my ground and bring the show. Thank YOU all for a memorable night and another one for the record books.”

Shields is a notable welterweight veteran in mixed martial arts. In his last outing, he lost to then-welterweight champion Rousimar Palhares last August, but lost by submission. Palhares controversially held on to the submission hold for too long, and also gouged Shields’ eyes, causing WSOF to strip him of the title and the Nevada State Athletic Commission to suspend him for two years.

Shields was supposed to headline WSOF 30 this past weekend against Jon Fitch for the vacant belt, but was pulled from the card for contractual reasons.
