The main event is set for the UFC’s return to Dublin, Ireland.

A lightweight fight between Joseph Duffy and Dustin Poirier will headline the Oct. 24 event, the promotion announced Wednesday. This is the first fight to be announced for the card, which will air live on UFC Fight Pass from 3Arena (formerly known as The O2 Arena).

Duffy (14-1) made his UFC debut in March, knocking out Jake Lindsey in the first round. He followed up that performance with a first-round triangle choke of Ivan Jorge at UFC Glasgow earlier this month. “Irish Joe” holds the distinction of being the last man to defeat Conor McGregor almost five years ago, which is often brought up every time he is discussed.

Poirier (18-4) has won two in a row since moving back up to lightweight this year, knocking out both Carlos Diego Ferreira and Yancy Medeiros in the first round. He told MMAFighting.com at International Fight Week that he wanted to fight in Ireland.

Last year’s Dublin event proved to be one of the most memorable cards of all-time in large part due to the boisterous sold-out crowd and because all the Irish fighters won, including main eventer McGregor against Brandao. And while October’s card is expected to be a success financially, it will not showcase McGregor, who is scheduled to fight Jose Aldo in a featherweight unification bout in the coming months.

The UFC returns to Brazil on Saturday, as the anticipated UFC 190 comes to fans live on pay-per-view. Headlined by female bantamweight ace Ronda Rousey and top contender Bethe Correia, the card boasts a seven-fight main card that will bring extra action for the fans.

Before that we have the preliminary card, which is strong on talent. Guys like former Strikeforce champion Rafael Cavalcante, UFC title challenger Demian Maia and rising star Warlley Alves all grace the undercard, making the prelims just as must-see as the main card.

Last weekend was not a great one for the prelim picks here, so this writer hopes to improve this time around. We are nearly eight months into the year, and we hope to push the winning percentage higher than it is.

With that, let’s examine the prelims and make some picks for this Saturday’s event.

Conor McGregor Admits Ronda Rousey Would Throw Him on His Head in 1 Second Flat

UFC interim featherweight champion Conor McGregor thinks women’s juggernaut Ronda Rousey is an “absolute animal” and someone he wouldn’t like to face in the Octagon.

The charismatic Irishman told SI Now (h/t Simon Head of the Sun), that he’d expect Rousey to instantly take him to the ground if the pair ever squared off:

I certainly would not like to end up in a tie-up with Miss Rousey! I remember one time when I’d seen her and I greeted her and I said ‘what’s up champ?’ and we embraced. I swear on my life her back muscles were the solidest (sic) back muscles I’d ever felt in my life.

I thought if this lady was to get a hold of me she would throw me on my head in literally one second flat. So I would not like to engage in a clinch fight with Ronda.

However, in true McGregor style, he’d still expect to end with the win: “But, make no mistake about it, I have my ways to win that fight, too!”

McGregor spoke ahead of Rousey’s title defence against Bethe Correia at Saturday’s UFC 190. He believes she is a “special individual” and the reason why women’s MMA is gaining popularity so rapidly: “As far as the women’s game she has created the women’s game. Without her all these women would still be going without food at night. So she is running her side of the game.”

Beating Chad Mendes at UFC 189 has earmarked McGregor as the targeted man in the featherweight division. His brutal second-round TKO came after he suppressed Mendes’ ground game in relaxed fashion, limiting the explosive American to short elbows when McGregor remained on his back.

McGregor’s ability to deal with the quality wrestler showed his game is far more than cocky movement and explosive hand power, marking his soon-to-be scheduled showdown with Jose Aldo as one of the organisation’s biggest-ever encounters. Aldo relinquished the belt due to injury, which saw Mendes step up to face Notorious, so hype for this bout continues to gain momentum.

“On the man’s side of the game there’s only one, and that is me,” said McGregor, turning his focus away from Rousey. “I hold every number in the game: the highest gate, the highest pay-per-view of the new era, the highest attended weigh-ins, the highest viewing figures on FOX, the highest subscriptions on Fight Pass.”

Aldo is currently top of the UFC’s official pound-for-pound rankings, with McGregor moving up to 13th after his win over Mendes. Nobody appears better set to enjoy the continued domination of a division like fourth-placed Rousey, though.

She is yet to experience defeat in her professional career, standing 11-0 since making her MMA debut in 2011 with a win over Ediane Gomes. Rowdy has spent just 30 seconds in the Octagon across her last two fights, and although Correia is also unbeaten, overcoming Ronda is a herculean task.

Rousey certainly expects to take control, tweeted by UFC:

Both McGregor and Rousey share a similar intensity and belief in their own abilities. They are always looking to progress and continually have to deal with challengers trying to usurp them on the ladder.

It’s rare to hear either doubt their skills in comparison to another fighter, so it’s refreshing to see McGregor holds so much respect for Rousey’s achievement and skills. The two are very much at the centre of UFC’s plans for the future.

Joe Duffy will receive an opportunity to impress his local fans with a UFC Dublin main event showdown against Dustin Poirier on Oct. 24.

UFC UK announced the 27-year-old fighter will have his name in lights after winning his first two encounters in the organisation:

Sports writer Paul Dollery thinks UFC President Dana White expects Duffy to become a star in the lightweight division:

Duffy debuted with a first-round win over Jake Lindsey in March, before stopping Ivan Jorge inside the opening minutes during his second appearance on July 18. His record currently stands at 14-1 in the professional game, per ESPN.com.

Poirier is an experienced opponent who has 13 UFC fights under his belt. He has emerged victorious in five of his last six, losing only to interim featherweight champion and all-round superstar Conor McGregor in this time.

The 26-year-old is currently ranked 14th in the lightweight division after consecutive victories over Carlos Diego Ferreira and Yancy Medeiros, both of whom he stopped in the first round.

Duffy actually has a 2010 win over McGregor on his record from their time in Cage Warriors. He will now be looking to follow in his fellow Irishman’s footsteps to land the biggest win of his career so far in front of a packed 3Arena crowd.
