This is the Strikeforce live blog for Ovince St. Preux vs. Abongo Humphrey, a light heavyweight bout on tonight’s Strikeforce Challengers 13 on Showtime card from the Nashville Municipal Auditorium in Nashville, Tenn.

OSP (9-4) is coming off a destruction over Benji Radach last month at Strikeforce: Henderson vs. Babalu. Humphrey (7-2) is probably best known for winning the BET Iron Ring tournament as well as losing to Brett Rogers in his Strikeforce debut. As a 205er, Humphrey is 1-1 in Strikeforce with a win over George Bush and a loss to Mike Kyle.

St. Preux, a former University of Tennessee football player who became a professional MMA fighter in 2008, dominated Abongo Humphrey in an exciting if not particularly technical fight on Friday night’s Strikeforce card. St. Preux won by unanimous decision, 30-27 on all three judges’ cards, making it the third time in the last seven weeks that St. Preux has won a unanimous decision.

In theory, Strikeforce: Challengers is the event where the prospects carve a name for themselves before moving on to the big show. You know that because the ham-fisted opening sequence tells you, in the most direct and stilted way possible.

In reality, there are usually two types of fighters on Challengers: the prospects, and the guys the prospects are supposed to beat up.

Friday night’s main event showdown between up-and-comers Tyron Woodley and Tarec Saffiedine was a welcome departure from that. It was a showdown between two tough guys who had come up through the ranks in Strikeforce and were looking to make the jump to the next level.

It happened again. For the second time in as many events in the Strikeforce: Challengers series, one of the night’s most compelling attractions ended with the winner pleading/demanding to be taken off Challengers and put into a major event.

Last time it was Matt Lindland, who’s never been shy about his expressing his opinions. This time it was 135-pound women’s champ Sarah Kaufman, who mentioned her desire to be on a proper Strikeforce card every single time there was a microphone nearby.

The thinking behind the Challengers cards is that it’s a proving ground for up-and-comers, hence the tagline, “Where champions are made.” In theory, that’s a pretty solid concept, or at least it would be if so many of the fighters featured on the event didn’t openly interpret their own presence there as an insult.
