Alistair Overeem ONE Championship

Alistair Overeem is rumored to be in talks with ONE Championship. ONE has recently announced a 16-man Muay Thai Openweight Grand Prix with a $1 Million prize. Apparently, the Dutch-born Overeem is interested.

After splitting with the UFC, ‘The Dutch Demolition Man’ defeated his long-time rival Badr Hari in GLORY Kickboxing in late 2022. Overeem was then looking at facing the GLORY Heavyweight Champion Rico Verhoeven but the Dutch athlete tested positive for a banned substance.

According to ONE’s CEO Chatri Sityodtong, the Openweight Grand Prix will feature fighters such as Rodtang (135 lbs) and Superbon (155 lbs). ONE’s promotional poster for the tournament already features a picture of Overeem (240 lbs). The poster also has the kickboxing light heavyweight world champion Roman Kryklia (230 lbs) and the Muay Thai strawweight world champion Joseph Lasiri (125 lbs).

The rumor of Alistair Overeem looking to compete in the Muay Thai Openweight Grand Prix was first reported by Nicolas Atkin of SCMP MMA.

What’s left for Alistair Overeem?

Alistair Overeem has had a storied career in combat sports. Since making his professional debut in 1999, he has competed in PRIDE FC, the UFC, K-1 Kickboxing, DREAM, Strikeforce, and GLORY Kickboxing, among others. After nearly 80 bouts between kickboxing and MMA, what’s left for ‘The Dutch Demolition Man’?

Last year, Overeem sat down with Tim Wheaton of Beyond Kickboxing to map out his future. The 42-year-old fighter explained that he would like one last bout to say goodbye to MMA. He said:

“There might be another opportunity to do another MMA fight. Because MMA requires a good farewell as well … I do have a particular scenario in mind, it would be a big stadium, like fifty-thousand people. So that’ll narrow it down for you; what stadium and where. It’ll be something along those lines that I’ve envisioned for myself.”

Between K-1 and PRIDE, Alistair Overeem fought in Japan’s Saitama Super Arena in a dozen bouts, and it sounds like he is looking for one more.

Former UFC heavyweight, Alistair Overeem has tested positive for a banned substance following his bout against Badr Hari.

Overeem made his return to kickboxing last month, taking on former foe and kickboxing legend, Badr Hari. ‘The Demolition Man’ would knockdown Hari twice in the final round of their bout, securing the 42-year-old a unanimous decision win.,

Following the fight, a sample provided by Overeem tested positive for a banned substance, which has been reported to not be performance-enhancing. The results from the B sample are still to be released.

After his match against Badr Hari in October,” Lars Van Soset of De Telegraaf wrote. “The 42-year-old kickboxer handed in a [sample] in which a prohibited substance was found. Various sources have confirmed this to De Telegraaf. Overeem’s management is currently awaiting the results of the b-sample and would not comment further. However, according to them, the substance found is not a performance-enhancing substance.”

This is not the first time that Overeem has been in trouble regarding banned substances, failing a test back in 2012 for elevated testosterone levels. The former Strikeforce champion had T/E levels of 14:1, over twice the allowed limit in competition and around seven times more than the average man.

What’s next for Alistair Overeem?

Overeem seemed the likely candidate to face Glory heavyweight champion Rico Verhoeven, who would enter the ring to confront Overeem. The fight had the potential to be a big event, especially in their home country of the Netherlands, but now the matchup seems unlikely.

No official ban has been passed down Overeem as of yet and neither Glory or athletic commissions have given an indication on the next steps.

Alistair Overeem is ready to settle rivalry with Badr Hari in a trilogy fight at Glory Collision 4

In a recent appearance on The MMA Hour, Alistair Overeem talked about coming back to fighting professionally after a year and eight-month hiatus.

“It’s been in a minute but again, eager to get back in there, shape is tremendous, phenomenal,” Overeem said (ht Middle Easy). “I’m just hungry to get back in there and yes last fight was a bit ago but you know you’re fighting in the gym, right? You’re sparring in the gym so it’s not like there’s no activity. It’s not like I’m laying on the couch. I always train,  I’ve turned everything up not one but five notches for this fight.

Overeem is targeting a fight with Rico Verhoeven

Overeem hinted that he would train even harder for a potential bout with the reigning Glory heavyweight champion Rico Verhoeven after.

And we’re probably going to turn it up two more for the Rico fight. Not looking ahead of things but I do believe I’m going to come out of this victorious with everything I have. And that’s gonna be interesting.”

Given the heated rivalry Overeem shared with Hari, he expects there to be tension and believes he has done enough to come out on top.

“Listen, I did my homework and I improved and we turned everything up not one but five notches. We’re there for the win. I’m in the best shape of my life,” he said. “I’m 42 years old, but the best shape is now and just excitement, just excitement. Listen, there’ll be some tension. There’ll be some adrenaline boiling right because you know, there’s gonna be some collision, Collision 4 but yeah, I did my homework.”
