Strikeforce: Overeem vs. Werdum will take place this Saturday, June 18 from Dallas.

Highlighting the night’s action will be a quarterfinal matchup between current Strikeforce heavyweight champion, Alistair “The Demolition Man” Overeem, and jiu-jitsu wizard, Fabricio “Vai Cavalo” Werdum, as they collide in the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix.

Competing against one another back in 2006, both fighters were in different stages of their careers.

Fabricio Werdum has since gone on to secure a tapout victory over the legendary icon, Fedor Emelianenko, elevating his status within the elite of the heavyweight division in all of mixed martial arts.

Similarly, Overeem has catapulted his career over the past five years.

Since originally facing Werdum, Overeem has added nearly 60 pounds of ferocious muscle to his 6’5″ frame. His imposing physique will be a glaring difference between the two competitors when they enter the Octagon in Dallas.

Additionally, like Werdum who is riding a wave of momentum with his submission victory over the immortal Emelianenko, Overeem is currently on a nine-fight win streak, defeating four of those opponents by (T)KO.

A much more confident stand-up striker, “The Demolition Man” has put his nickname to the test as he has annihilated virtually every opponent over the past two years.

Speaking with www.mmaweekly.com, Overeem commented on his fight plan going into this Saturday’s event.

“This fight is going to be different than the last time. You’re going to see a way more aggressive Alistair Overeem, and I’ll be looking for the knockout from the first second,” Overeem stated.

Oddsmakers favor the Dutch man going into this weekend’s quarterfinal matchup. Currently the Strikeforce heavyweight champion and K-1 kickboxing champion, Overeem has a humongous wave of momentum.

Without a fight for six months, Overeem is still focused and dedicated to avenging his previous loss to Werdum.

“I have a lot of motivation, believe me,” commented Overeem. “I’m just happy. I’m just happy this fight is happening. I wanted to fight Fabricio then the tournament came around, for me and excellent opportunity to fight him. I’m motivated, you’re going to see that next week exactly how motivated I am.”

Highly motivated, a monster of a man, tremendously aggressive in his stand-up skills, and riding a volatile wave of momentum, Alistair Overeem will be looking to savagely beat-down Fabricio Werdum, avenging his previous loss, and continue in the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix tournament.

Stay tuned this Saturday to see if vengeance will be secured by the Dutch man.

I welcome your comments.

When Strikeforce, Dream and K-1 champion Alistair Overeem faces Fabricio Werdum on Saturday in Dallas, it will not be the first time the two have met in an MMA bout.

Back in 2006, before Overeem became “Ubereem” and prior to Werdum ending Fedor Emelianenko‘s unbeaten streak, the two met at the 2006 Openweight Pride Grand Prix tournament.

Werdum would use a kimura to submit Overeem in the second round of that bout.

When the two face each other in the quarterfinals of the Strikeforce World Grand Prix Heavyweight Tournament on Saturday, Overeem will be looking to avenge that loss, while Werdum will look to add another victim to his list.

The main card will be broadcast on Showtime beginning at 10 p.m. ET on Saturday, June 18. The winner of the bout will move on to face Antonio Silva in the semifinals of the tournament.

Brazilian jiu-jitsu Black Belt Fabricio Werdum appeared to be in over his head when he signed to fight the legendary fighter from Russia, Fedor Emelianenko.

Werdum (14-4) didn’t waste any time in locking Emelianenko up in a triangle choke shortly after he was dropped 30 seconds into Round 1. “The Last Emperor” tried to fight it off but succumbed to the pressure of the two-time ADCC world heavyweight champion’s submission, tapping out 1:09 into the round.

The former UFC and Pride veteran will be fighting this weekend at Strikeforce in Dallas, Texas. His opponent is top-10 heavyweight and current Strikeforce Heavyweight Champion Alistair Overeem (34-11). The three-round bout will not be for the title, but it will be for a spot in the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix semifinals.

The quarterfinal bout will be a rematch of their 2006 fight where Werdum submitted the “Demolition Man,” who is the only fighter to have held championship titles in both kickboxing and MMA at the same time. Since that loss, Overeem has gone 11-4, with three of those losses coming within a year of submitting to Werdum.

The other quarterfinal bout includes Brett Rogers vs. Josh Barnett, which will be broadcast on the same card.

Strikeforce Overeem vs. Werdum: What If Fabricio Werdum Beats Alistair Overeem?

It’s safe to say that June has been a good month to fans of Zuffa’s heavyweight warriors.

Last weekend, UFC 131 featured a huge title contender battle between Junior Dos Santos and Shane Carwin, with Dos Santos coming out the definitive winner, giving Carwin one hell of a beat down.

This Saturday, Strikeforce and Dream Heavyweight champ Alistair Overeem will face Fabricio Werdum in the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix, a bout that will have serious repercussions for the rankings of MMA’s top 265ers.

Overeem, who has been on a tear since moving to heavyweight full-time, is 5-0 in his last five fights and hasn’t lost since 2007. Not surprisingly, he is a -500 favorite according to Bodog.eu.

Critics shouldn’t hastily count Werdum out however, as he thrives as the underdog and has been performing exceptionally well against the division’s top fighters.

No one will forget his submission upset over MMA legend Fedor Emelianenko last June, a win that came nearly a year after he defeated rising star Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva.

Overeem, although decimating anyone to cross his path, has not been facing the best of the best. He hasn’t even faced a high profile fighter since a no contest with Mirko Cro Cop in 2008.

If Werdum were to beat Overeem in a convincing fashion, I would argue that he should be ranked near the top of the heavyweight rankings.

Werdum, who hasn’t tasted defeat since a 2008 TKO loss to Dos Santos, owns wins over some of the sport’s biggest names. He’s the only fighter to submit both Emelianenko brothers, stopped Brandon Vera and Gabriel Gonzaga back-to-back, and already has a win over Overeem.

Defeating Overeem again would be a huge opportunity for the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu ace to make a big splash in the MMA world and would set him up perfectly to take the Grand Prix title.

Having already beaten “Bigfoot,” the only person who would still pose a threat would be Sergei Kharitonov, who just barely edged Werdum in 2005, winning a split decision at Pride 30.

Taking the Grand Prix title would be a major milestone in Werdum’s career and would catapult him to MMA stardom, and possibly, a UFC title fight in the future.
