Jose Aldo

Former UFC featherweight king turned bantamweight contender, Jose Aldo has defended the newly crowned 135lb champion, Aljamain Sterling, who picked up the belt in the most unusual way.

Sterling has faced a storm of criticism from Yan, other fighters, and fans alike. The first fighter in the promotion’s history to win a title due to a disqualification, Sterling has been called an ‘actor’ for how he responded to the fight-ending illegal knee. While some have come to his defense, Sterling remains the heel to most.

‘Funk Master’ has also faced criticism for his reluctance to rematch Yan who to many was on route to a successful first title defence before he threw the illegal strike in round four.

“This guy is getting rewarded with a rematch, which I get is a big fight. But, it is like, we can just break the rules and nothing is ever going to happen to us,” Sterling recently said. “So I can just jump the octagon and nothing is ever going to happen to me. I can just go and fight another corner or push him after the bell and nothing is ever going to happen. It’s like, I feel like when you have rules for a reason. You kinda have to enforce them, or otherwise let’s just run them up. I feel like his ass should have been suspended or something. Pay me some money for an illegal foul that might take years off of my career.”

Aldo told MMA Fighting, that despite what many may think, Sterling a “the legitimate champion.”

“I do consider him the champion,” Aldo said. “It wasn’t his fault. He didn’t throw the illegal strike or anything like that. Petr made a mistake and paid for his mistake. It’s more than fair, you can’t say [Sterling] is not the champion. It doesn’t matter if it’s by disqualification or not, rules are there to be followed. I do see him as the champion. If he felt [the knee] or not, only he can say, but I do see him as the legitimate champion.”

Do you agree with Jose Aldo? Is Aljamain Sterling a legitimate UFC champion?

“Any other sport when you do something intentionally illegal, you get suspended, you get fined, you get ejected from the game.”

Aljamain has faced a storm of criticism from Yan, other fighters, and fans alike. The first fighter in the promotion’s history to win a title due to a disqualification, Sterling has been called an ‘actor’ for how he responded to the fight-ending foul. While some have come to his defense, Sterling remains the heel to most.

Aljamain Sterling’s recent comments are in stark contrast to his position on a rematch following UFC 259. He originally said that he felt a rematch with Yan was the fight to make in the aftermath of his title win. Yet, it seems as time has passed Sterling now believes that a rematch will be in the future but should not be immediate. For his part, Yan has been vocal about the fact that he believes Sterling doesn’t want to fight him again. Since the fight, Yan and Sterling continue to engage in a war of the words on Twitter. It’s possible that this is contributing to Sterling’s shift in opinion.

“This guy is getting rewarded with a rematch, which I get is a big fight. But, it is like, we can just break the rules and nothing is ever going to happen to us. So I can just jump the octagon and nothing is ever going to happen to me. I can just go and fight another corner or push him after the bell and nothing is ever going to happen. Pay me some money for an illegal foul that might take years off of my career.”

It will be interesting to see who Sterling does eventually fight in his first title defense. He has stated that he would be OK fighting Henry Cejudo before Yan. Now that Cejudo has returned, the future of the Sterling/Yan rematch may be in the air.

Who do you think Aljamain Sterling should fight in his first title defense?

Former UFC Bantamweight champion Petr Yan believes that his time to challenge for the belt again, after losing it at UFC 259 due to throwing an illegal strike, will come again sooner rather than later.

In an interview with Russian outlet Sport24, Yan shared that his team had already begun discussing a date for the rematch to take place with the UFC.

“The rematch is already under discussion, Yan said. “Perhaps it will be in the next two or three months – in the summer or closer to this time.” [Translated through Google]

The bantamweight title changed hands at UFC 259 after Yan landed an illegal knee on Aljamain Sterling as he was at the time a downed opponent.

Following this, Sterling could no longer continue, and referee Herb Dean was forced to call the fight. Up until that point, the fight had been quite competitive, however, it appeared to be trending in favor of Yan heading into the later rounds.

As far as taking a loss goes, Yan appears to be in high spirits sharing with Sport24 that the incident may have given him the publicity that he lacked previously.

“In this division, the loudest opponent is myself,” Yan said. “Previously, no one really noticed me, but after this incident, now all the media are trying to talk about it. Well, nothing, life goes on, and there are positive aspects. Better to lose the way I did it than win the way Sterling did.” [Translated through Google]

Following his victory it appeared that Sterling may have been eyeing a match with the former double champion and retired fighter Henry Cejudo, however, Sterling later cleared up these accusations stating that the video face off the pair took part it was all a part of fun and not serious.

While in Sterling’s hands, the Bantamweight title will likely be put on the line once again in a rematch that will hopefully share a clear indication of who is currently the number one Bantamweight fighter in the UFC.
