UFC bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling has called for the promotion to use a different type of glove in the aftermath of Leon Edwards vs. Belal Muhammad.
The UFC Vegas 21 main event came to an unfortunate end in round two.
As Edwards landed a body kick his outstretched finger inadvertently poked his opponent in the eye.
Muhammad dropped to the ground, crying in pain. It quickly became clear the #13 ranked welterweight was unable to continue and the fight was declared a no-contest.
Sterling was quick to take to social media to react to the incident. ‘Funk Master’ even called on the UFC to act on the unfortunate event by introducing a new type of glove that will help reduce the number of eye pokes we see in the Octagon.
“We need new gloves. Period! They’re out there,” Sterling wrote on Twitter. “I just don’t understand what we’re waiting for to make these changes. How many more eye injuries do we need to bring these new gloves in, that significantly reduce the spreading of the fingers. #UFCVegas21”
Do you agree with the bantamweight champion, Aljamain Sterling? Do the UFC need to use different gloves so we can avoid eye pokes in the Octagon?

Anthony Smith was frustrated by a number of things at UFC 259 this past weekend.
The major talking point, of course, was the illegal knee Aljamain Sterling suffered against Petr Yan in their bantamweight title fight. Sterling was criticized for overacting in the aftermath with the referee giving him as much time as possible to recover.
In the end, Sterling never got to his feet and the referee disqualified Yan with the former being crowned the new champion. Sterling has since received plenty of hate online, especially for posing with the belt after initially claiming he didn’t want to win it that way.
Smith is no stranger to receiving an illegal knee. He was on the receiving end of one against Jon Jones in their light heavyweight title fight in 2019. Unlike Sterling, however, Smith continued and ended up losing a unanimous decision.
But despite that, he doesn’t get why Sterling has been receiving so much hate.
“First of all, I see all the Aljamain hate, I see all the bs. I hate it,” Smith said on Sirius XM (via Middle Easy). “I only hate it for one reason. It’s because I got a s**t ton of it when I continued to go on. Those exact same people are the same ones shitting on Aljo for not. So that’s frustrating.
“I don’t expect the same people to do some things that I do. I don’t expect people to live their life the way I live mine. It doesn’t matter how hurt I was. If I was unconscious I would’ve woke up and would’ve stood up and said I was fine to continue fighting because that’s who I am. I don’t expect people to do that. I put myself in terrible positions all the time.”
Smith also took issue with the referee.
While the referee allowed Sterling plenty of time to decide whether he can continue, Smith believes the right decision to make was obvious.
“I am so sick of these refs wanting to pass the buck, and punt every single problem they have,” Smith explained. “You don’t need help making the decision. Especially from a fighter who was just fouled to their brain.
“Second, if we’re tasking these referees with the responsibility to know when fighters are hurt — to know when they can’t continue anymore, to stop the fight, in a legal fight-ending sequence — why does the legality of that shot matter? Because if Aljamain’s knee was one inch off of the mat, when he took that knee, Mark Smith would have stepped in and stopped that fight immediately.
“Wouldn’t have even been any follow-up shots. Why does that change because that blow was illegal? If it was legal we would have stopped that fight and given Aljo a chance. Why are we gonna force him to continue because it was illegal?”

Yan cost himself the fight and the championship when he landed an illegal knee as Sterling was down on the mat
After much confusion, referee Mark Smith eventually disqualified Yan and the title was handed to Sterling – who has expressed his unhappiness at winning the belt by default.
The Russian has blasted Sterling since the fight, claiming he was faking the severity of his injury in order to win by DQ.
“I was trying to understand what was going on,” Yan told Helwani via a translator. “Then I saw the tape and I saw in this moment the doctor come into the cage and the referee talking to the doctor and referee saying to the doctor that this knee was illegal and he’s going to disqualify me and Aljamain was just sitting right next to them. He was hearing what the referee was saying to the doctor and after that we can see Aljamain start to feel worse and worse every second. So he started to lie on the ground and I don’t know what happened…
“You can see, the first few moments after the knee landed he was trying to recover,” Yan added. “But then, I feel like he started to exaggerate, he started to (be) acting because he heard what the referee said. I feel like he could have continued. It was his choice not to but I feel like he could have continued and what happened after, first he claims he doesn’t remember what happened then he starts explaining what happened. Then he’s doing an interview after the fight, telling what was going on so to me it’s obvious he was very aware of what’s going on, of what he’s doing and it was his decision to not continue to get a disqualification win.” (Transcribed by MMA Fighting)
