The new UFC bantamweight champion, Aljamain Sterling is hoping to forgo a rematch with Petr Yan and instead fight former two-weight king Henry Cejduo next.

Sterling won the 135lb belt in unfortunate circumstances at UFC 259.

‘The Funkmaster’ was clearly losing to Yan through four rounds before the Russian landed an illegal strike.

Sterling hit the ground and Yan threw a knee which connected clean.

The American was unable to get back up, ultimately Yan was disqualified, and Sterling was crowned the new champion.

Sterling initially refused to accept the belt but was later seen posing with it for pictures.

Yan then began to attack his opponent on social media.

Meanwhile, Sterling ran into former dual-weight champ, Cejudo and is now hoping to fight him next rather than take a highly anticipated rematch with Yan.

“All that talking stops when face to face! We can do this fight next instead” Sterling wrote to UFC president Dana White on social media.

Cejudo retired from the sport last year after successfully defending his bantamweight title against 135lb legend Dominick Cruz at UFC 249.

‘Triple C’ has stayed in the limelight by calling for a fight with featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski and seems destined to make a comeback in 2021. Could it be against Aljamain Sterling?

It took a day for Petr Yan to change his tune on Aljamain Sterling.

Sterling became the new bantamweight champion at UFC 259 last night after Yan was disqualified for an illegal knee during the fourth round of their title fight.

It was an unfortunate end to a great fight, especially as Yan looked well on his way to winning the contest. The Russian would apologize for his actions on social media soon after and wished Sterling a quick recovery.

However, despite Sterling claiming that wasn’t the way he wanted to win the title and leaving the belt in the Octagon, he was later seen posing with it in a photo posted by teammate Merab Dvalishvili.

Yan certainly didn’t appreciate that as he responded soon after.

“Glad to see champ is fine now…”

On Instagram, he would also call Sterling a clown to which Dvalishvili responded.

Sterling would also respond to the former champion.

“@PetrYanUFC please allow me to cleanly knee you in the temple, while you aren’t looking! See how much of a “clown” I would be then. I can admit RD 4 you were starting to land more shots, but the fight was statistically close, despite me fatiguing early. The clown here is you.”

Ironically, Sterling still claimed he didn’t feel like a champion despite posing with the belt.

“Thanks, but I don’t feel like a champ yet until we do it again,” he responded to a fan.

The quickest solution? Run things back.

Both Petr Yan and Aljamain Sterling were quick to take to social media following UFC 259.

Sterling became the bantamweight champion after an illegal knee by Yan stopped their UFC 259 title fight in the fourth round on Saturday night.

It was an unfortunate end to what was a great fight and one in which it looked like Yan was well on his way to earning his first bantamweight title defense.

The Russian apologized for his actions soon after the fight.

“I apologize and wish speedy recovery to @funkmasterMMA I didn’t mean to throw an illegal strike, I just made a big mistake and paid for it.”

Sterling — who threw the belt after it was awarded to him — called for a rematch as he reflected on the fight.

“Not the way I ever want to win a fight. It was close, competitive and filled with action. I felt the knee was intentional, especially after the ref announced I was a downed opponent, so I didn’t expect to be hit. Yan is a bad dude! WE WILL DO IT AGAIN!”

“Finally getting to watch the sequence and wow…Heartbreaking to watch”

It seems there is no other option than to book an immediate rematch.

What did you make of the incident? Should it have been a no contest instead?
