Silva is looking to make his UFC return sooner rather than later.

Anderson Silva seemingly reveals when he plans to make his return to the Octagon.

Just a few months ago, these comments weren’t even realistic due to him being on the sidelines as a result of a failed drug test.

Silva Sidelined

The former UFC middleweight champion was pulled from his bout against Kelvin Gastelum at the UFC Fight Night 122 event last year after he was flagged due to a U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) violation as he tested positive for two banned substances, which were methyltestosterone and a diuretic. It’s been well documented that those samples were collected back on October 26, 2017.

This wasn’t the first time that Silva tested positive as he did for the ******** drostanolone and androsterone in 2015. He would later blame his first failed drug test on a Thai sex drug. This forced him to be on the sidelines for one year.

For his latest failed test, he received a one-year suspension from USADA dating back to October of 2017. Thus, will be eligible to return in October of this year where he plans to resume his career.

Anderson Silva Seemingly Reveals

However, he plans to get back into fight shape as he noted in a comment on his Instagram page that he plans to return in January. With Silva being adamant about wanting to fight once again, it will be interesting to who the promotion books him up against in his next fight.

Last year proved to be a difficult transition for new UFC owners Endeavor (formerly WME-IMG), who bought the UFC for over $4 billion in 2016.

With superstars sidelined and hype trains’ stock crashing in a single night, it’s been a tough go for the UFC. Couple that with injuries, weight-cutting issues, rampant performance-enhancing drug use, and rapidly declining pay-per-view sales, and it would seem like things can’t get much worse.

There’s obviously still time for Endeavor to turn things around, but their margin for error is considerably smaller in 2018 than it was at the start of 2017.

With a new year ahead of them, the UFC must abide by six directives in order to succeed in 2018.

6. Spread The Hype More Evenly

UFC 220 was a perfect example of what the UFC cannot do in the coming year.

Title challengers Francis Ngannou and Volkan Oezdemir were hyped beyond belief, especially Ngannou.

The hype was so excessive that it actually came across as disrespect to champions Stipe Miocic and Daniel Cormier, to the point where Miocic refused to let Dana White put the belt around his waist after snuffing out Ngannou’s hype train.

The UFC had the right intentions but the wrong idea; they need to build up their champions, especially Miocic, instead of flavor-of-the-month prospects. They have an absolute killer as a heavyweight champion and they put more energy into Ngannou, who in reality had only knocked out two top fighters – both of whom Miocic dispatched before beforehand.

With so many new divisions and champions, it may seem hard to do, however, it’s the only way to avoid the pitfalls of last year.

UFC president Dana White is well known for his bombastic temperament.

He’s always said exactly what’s on his mind, and whether it’s about a fighters’ performance, referees, or business partners, no one is safe from his wrath.

While most fighters under the UFC banner do their best to appease their mercurial boss, many others have found themselves on the wrong side of Dana White.

Take a look at 10 former and current UFC fighters who ended up on White’s “s*% list”:

10. Jason High

One thing White hasn’t tolerated is fighters hitting or otherwise assaulting a referee. Well, he did it when Conor McGregor stormed the Bellator cage and shoved a ref, he did it with Big Country when he kicked “Big” John, but Jason High doesn’t carry the same cache as those men.

So when High expressed his frustration due to what he perceived to be an early stoppage in a TKO loss to Rafael Dos Anjos in 2014, White didn’t hesitate to lambaste him before cutting him from the promotion entirely (his second time being let go from the UFC). Adding to High’s frustration was the fact that he was hit with some illegal strikes throughout the contest.

But after two failed stints in the UFC, albeit by way of top-tier competition, coupled with the lapse in judgment in shoving a referee was more than enough to warrant his release from the promotion.

“I heard – I didn’t even see it – that he put his hands on a referee. Done,” Dana White said of High’s indiscretion. “You touched a referee. Done. Over. That’s worse than what (Paul) Daley did to (Josh) Koscheck.”

2017 was certainly an inconsistent year for the UFC.

Big successes came in the form of Mayweather vs. McGregor even though it technically didn’t take place in MMA (or even close to it), but a rash of high-profile injuries, failed drug tests, absent champions, and debilitating weight issues lead to more headaches and problems than successes for the world’s leading MMA promotion overall.

In total, its been a rocky road, to say the least, since WME-IMG bought the promotion from the Fertitta brothers for a then-record $4.2 billion in July 2016.

Are these recent blunders a sign of the end times for the UFC? Or will they recover from disasters like the Jon Jones debacle or Anderson Silva’s rapid downfall?

Let’s take a look at seven significant signs that the UFC is headed for disaster:

Jason Silva/Zuma Press/Icon Sportswire

7. Absence Of Conor McGregor In The Octagon

The UFC obviously benefited from Mayweather vs McGregor, but they were one of many hands in the pot financially. With their former featherweight and current lightweight champion, on the sidelines otherwise, McGregor has been making the news for all the wrong reasons lately.

But that’s almost besides the point. No McGregor means less blockbuster cards, one of their tried-and-true superstars.

And without defending the belt, he’s continuing to hold up a division that already has an interim champ.

Now we’re left wondering whether or not he will ever return to the UFC, especially considering the massive amount of money he made in the Mayweather fight. With McGregor no longer in the picture, does that spell the end of McGregor’s MMA career? That would really put a stake in the heart of the promotion, one it may or may not be able to recover from.

UFC President Dana White has dealt with Anderson Silva for over a decade, including Silva’s first failed PED test after his UFC 183 bout against Nick Diaz.

White was asked about Silva’s situation after a now second failed test leading into his canceled headliner against Kelvin Gastelum at UFC Shanghai and did not give much uplifting news regarding the disgraced former champion.

During a media luncheon in Las Vegas last week, White had this to say about Silva:

“Obviously (I was) bummed out. I was bummed out. I don’t know. They’ve been pretty radio silent. I talked to Ed Soares a couple times and he hadn’t even really talked to Anderson.”

Silva attributed his first failed PED test to some kind of erectile dysfunction medication he was given to by a friend. USADA and the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) didn’t believe him, and he was suspended a full year for his indiscretion.

His team recently gave a similar explanation this time around, claiming the ever-popular tainted supplement defense, but if the outcome of his first excuse didn’t work, it could be extremely unlikely that

The 42-year-old legend is likely facing a longer suspension this time around being that this is his second offense, and even though his team suggests that “The Spider” will fight on, he’s running out of time – and excuses – as PED-related issues cloud the end of his otherwise great career.

What do you think about Silva’s legacy? Will it be cast aside due to two failed drug tests, or will the fact that he was not caught during his nearly seven-year run as middleweight champion still lend him a spot amongst the best mixed martial arts combatants of all-time?

Former middleweight champion and UFC legend Anderson Silva was flagged for the second time in his career for a positive drug test leading into his main event with Kelvin Gastelum in Shanghai last month.

Silva was unceremoniously pulled from the fight and is now facing a lengthy suspension given this was his second failed USADA test, but his coach has come to his defense using the ever-popular ‘tainted supplement’ excuse.

Silva’s conditioning coach Rogerio Camoes discussed his star pupil’s newest failed drug test on Brazilian television show “Revista Combate” on Tuesday:

“I’m with Anderson for many years and the first thing he said was, ‘Master, I didn’t take anything. I trust his word because Anderson is very mature and experienced, he has the conscience not to take anything that would compromise being suspended or taint his image.

“We believe in some contamination in some supplement. Every product he used, supplements, will be analyzed so we can prove there was a contamination. It’s a slow process, it’s not overnight, and it requires time and money. It’s very expensive.”

Many high profile fighters have used the same excuse when caught using performance-enhancing drugs, but Silva may not receive the benefit of the doubt this time around. Silva attributed his first failed test to some kind of over-the-counter, generic erectile dysfunction pills.

He was punished and suspended for a year regardless, and his team appears to be using a similar defense this time around, despite the fact that it didn’t grant him an appeal after the first failed test following UFC 183.

Camoes admitted to using testosterone replacement therapy himself, but stressed that ‘he never encourage anyone else to do so’.

The former champion, who ruled over the middleweight division for six years, has started looking more and more like an aged fighter in the waning part of his career, however, his conditioning coach believes we haven’t seen the last of “The Spider” in the Octagon:

“I believe he will (come back). In life, when someone is taken away from you, that’s when you want it the most. The thing he wants the most is fighting. I believe he will come back to fighting.

“Before all that happened, I remember saying to (boxing coach Luiz Carlos) Dorea, ‘This guy will fight for more three or four years. This guy will fight until he’s 45, 46 years old.’ He was like a young kid, so happy. Everything will be cleared.

“There will be a penalty, or course, we know the USADA rules, and even with a contamination, it’s the athlete’s responsibility what he takes and you have to be careful with that. We’re waiting for something to know which path we will go after all this.”

Do you believe Camoes tainted supplement defense? Will Anderson Silva ever fight again?
