Georges St-Pierre explains why he has no interest in fighting former UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva in a superfight.

Even though the potential of it happening is not the greatest, one can dream. Years ago, fight fans always wondered what would happen if the best man from one division faced off with the best from another division.

GSP spoke on The Luke Thomas Show on Sirius XM about this fight and his desire to return to the Octagon. He noted that at this stage in the game for him, he doesn’t have any interest in taking the Silva fight.

“The fight with Anderson Silva, there’s been a lot of talk,” St-Pierre said. “It’s been offered to me twice, earlier in my career, during my welterweight run. I don’t exactly remember when. I was doing my welterweight run and I had a talk with Dana and Lorenzo, The condition if I would make that fight was a catchweight. Because after my goal was to go back down to my initial weight class at 170. Also, I wanted to implement testing, which they didn’t have before. I was asking for VADA and back in the day they had issues. Something happened politically between the UFC and VADA. I don’t know what happened, but they were not interested in that.”

What’s Changed?

Both fighters have gone in separate ways after being at the top of their divisions years ago. GSP returned to competition in November 2017 after four years away from the sport. He scored a submission victory in the third round over Michael Bisping at UFC 217 to win the middleweight title. Shortly after the fight, he had to vacate the title as he is dealing with colitis.

“The other time that happened, after I finished, I took a break with Johny Hendricks. Dana texted me asking if I want to fight Anderson Silva. But I didn’t want to fight nobody. I said no. I took four years off. Now things have changed. Silva has lost. Now it is not as interesting. There’s a lot more to lose than gain.”

Anderson Silva Won’t Rule Out Fight With Georges St-Pierre

Anderson Silva won’t rule out a super fight with Georges St-Pierre.

Even though the potential of it happening is not the greatest, one can dream. Years ago, fight fans always wondered what would happen if the best man from one division faced off with the best from another division which perhaps no other super fight has ever been discussed more than a bout between the former longtime middleweight champion and the former 170-pound ruler.

In a recent interview with MMA Fighting, Silva made it known that he still has the desire to fight  the Canadian star in a super fight as he wants to get back inside of the Octagon fighting once again after his latest troubles but even though years have passed from when they were in their primes, he still has hope for a fight that never came to fruition.

“Anything is possible in the UFC, man,” Silva said. “It’s a very eclectic company, with a broad vision of the sport. They are going through a new moment, a moment of entertainment, so anything can happen.”

“I think the decisions have to be made at the time they have to be made,” Silva said when asked about GSP moving up to middleweight when he was no longer the champion. “I think he had a good strategy, did a good fight with Bisping. They are both great fighters. If we didn’t fight that’s because it really shouldn’t have happened.”

GSP returned to competition in November after four years away from the sport to win the middleweight title with a submission victory in the third round over Michael Bisping at UFC 217 but shortly after the fight, he had to vacate the title as he is dealing with colitis.

On the flip side, Silva received a one-year suspension from USADA and is just waiting until November to take his next fight, which should be booked in the coming months.

Earlier this week, it was reported that former longtime UFC welterweight champion Georges “Rush” St. Pierre had finally agreed to terms with the promotion, which could mean his long-awaited return to action is coming soon.

St. Pierre hasn’t competed since 2013, and apparently he was in serious talks with the UFC regarding a return fight late last year, but negotiations went south.

If St. Pierre is indeed ready to return to the Octagon he once ruled, many big fights will await him and perhaps one of the most lucrative would be a bout between him and legendary former middleweight champion Anderson Silva. Silva’s manager, Ed Soares, believes the bout makes the most sense:

“GSP vs. Anderson is something I feel makes the most sense for everyone,” Soares told Bloody Elbow. “Two of the greatest of all time fighting is good for the fans, the UFC, and for both athletes. This would make everyone a lot of money and it’s a fight MMA fans all over the world would want to watch.”

Many wanted to see the two fight during their primes when they were on top of their respective divisions, but the fight is still a possibility. After losing his 185-pound title to Chris Weidman in 2013, Silva went 0-3-1 before finally getting back to his winning ways with a somewhat controversial decision victory over Derek Brunson at last weekend’s UFC 208.

Would you like to see “Rush” take on “The Spider”?

As fight fans, we have been treated to some exciting fights throughout 2016, but there’s always room to hope for more in the coming year and given that it’s Christmas morning, there may be no better time to construct a wish list.

Check out our wish list below that contains fight fights we hope to see in 2017:

The Early Breakdown: Does "Rumble" have a chance against "Bones ...

Jon Jones vs. Anthony Johnson

Aside from rematches with champion Daniel Cormier and Alexander Gustafsson, former UFC light heavyweight champion Jon “Bones” Jones has essentially cleaned out the 205-pound division of new contenders with the exception of one man: No. 1-ranked Anthony “Rumble” Johnson.

The two men were scheduled to fight in April 2015, but legal issues forced Jones to withdraw. Now, “Bones” is currently sidelined until July dealing with a USADA (United States Anti-Doping Agency) suspension, while Johnson will likely take on “DC” in the coming months.

If Johnson can indeed take out Cormier, which he nearly did when the two first met, a match between him and Jones could finally be set up upon Jones’ return. From a stylistic standpoint, the bout makes quite a bit of sense, as it would pit arguably the best fighter of all-time up against one of the hardest hitters in the sport.

Super fights have long been a hot topic in the sport of mixed martial arts.

Fight fans have always wondered what would happen if the best man from one division faced off with the best from another division.

With that being said, perhaps no hypothetical super fight has ever been discussed more than a bout between former long-time middleweight champion Anderson “The Spider” Silva and former 170-pound ruler Georges St-Pierre.

Obviously fans would have wanted to see the bout when each man was at the pinnacle during his illustrious reign atop his respective division, but the bout may not totally be a foregone thought.

Since losing his title back in 2013, Silva has hit some extremely rough times, but is still competing at the age of 41.

St-Pierre, on the other hand, has been on the sidelines since he vacated his title that same year, but a possible return to action is constantly brought up.

According to “The Spider”, the fight could still take place:

“It could happen,” Silva said through an interpreter at Wednesday’s UFC 198 press conference in Brazil. “It would be an honor to fight him. It could happen.”

Silva will indeed face off with former The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 17 finalist Uriah Hall at May 14’s UFC 198 from his home of Curitiba, Brazil.

Despite his upcoming fight, and aside from the St-Pierre talk, Silva also recently made headlines when he voiced his interest in fighting featherweight kingpin Conor McGregor, simply an outlandish request.

While tons of fighters have called out McGregor due to the money that he brings to the table, “The Spider” assures us that he simply would like to test his skills against those of the Irishman:

“I’ve never thought thinking of money,” Silva said. “I really want to test myself against him, he’s a great athlete, had great skills, even though my focus is on y next opponent, but I’d like to test myself against him. I’ve never fought in the weight classes below, only in my younger days in Shooto. For me to test myself, it’s a great fight.”

While a bout with McGregor appears to be out of this world, do you see Silva and St-Pierre ever actually doing battle?

Georges St-Pierre Describes His Worst Moment In The UFC

Former UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre is still considered among the greatest fighters of all time, and his influence on 170-pound history is simply undeniable. Former UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre is still considered among the greatest fighters of all time, and his influence on 170-pound history is simply undeniable. He was one of the most dominant fighters in a heavily talented welterweight division, rising to the top by beating fellow legend Matt Hughes in their second fight in 2006. It seems a lifetime ago that GSP won that belt at UFC 65: Bad Intentions, and it’s crazy how much things have changed in the ten years since. The sport has rolled on without the physical presence of ‘Rush’ for nearly three years now.

After defeating Johny Hendricks in a highly debated UFC 167 split decision, a clearly disheartened St-Pierre gave up the belt and walked out of the limelight. That moment created months of chaos, and ever since the fight game has collectively wondered if/when GSP will return. With the historic UFC 200 just around the corner, the rumours of a return for ‘Rush’ have been rampant.

It would seem fitting for GSP to comeback at the second milestone event for the promotion, as he fought Thiago Alves at the UFC 100 blockbuster card, which remains the biggest pay-per-view card for the promotion to date. One fight that is often referenced to when discussing St-Pierre is the first fight with Matt Serra, which was also the French Canadian’s first title defense. After decimating Hughes the fight before, many believed GSP would steam roll over Serra, who was coming off a victorious stint on the Ultimate Fighter 4 to get the title shot.

What happened is still widely considered as the biggest MMA upset ever, as Serra caught St-Pierre with some hard punches, flattening him to steal the belt in a wild frenzy.
