UFC on FOX 27 went down tonight (Saturday, January 27, 2018) from the Spectrum Center in Charlotte, North Carolina. The night was headlined by a middleweight contender matchup between former Strikeforce champion Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza and hometown hero Derek Brunson. The tilt was a rematch of their 2012 in Strikeforce, which the Brazilian won by knockout in less than a minute.

It took a little bit longer this time, but the result was the same. Brunson flurried with power punches after a feeling out process, but Jacare blocked most of it while delivering counter hooks. Surprisingly, it was not another counter hook on the defensively open Brunson that ended. After another exchange, the Brazilian uncorked a head kick that, even partially blocked, badly stunned Brunson. Jacare calmly walked forward and delivered the fight-ending follow-up blows, earning a second first-round finish over the North Carolinian.

The co-headliner was an action fight between exciting featherweight scrappers Dennis Bermudez and Andre Fili. The action was close throughout, with Fili surprisingly getting the better of the wrestling. He was unable to hold Bermudez down for any length of time, however, and the two peppered each other with punches and kicks for 15 minutes. Bermudez leaned on leg kicks while Fili tagged the oncoming Long Islander with punches. In the end, “Touchy” Fili pulled out a contentious split decision victory.

Dennis Bermudez has dropped his third bout in a row after suffering a split decision loss to Andre Fili.

The co-main event of UFC on FOX 27 featured featherweight action. Bermudez and Fili went one-on-one inside the Spectrum Center in Charlotte, North Carolina.

The two quickly met at the center of the Octagon. Bermudez fired off a leg kick and shot in. It didn’t take long for the two to separate. Bermudez was finding a home for the jab. “The Menace” got a body lock and pressed his opponent against the fence. Surprisingly, Fili took down Bermudez but it was brief. Once again, Fili scored a takedown near the end of the round.

Right way, Bermudez went for a takedown in the second stanza,. Fili once again scored a takedown. Bermudez kept going to the calf kicks. A left hand followed by a right hook was there for Fili. Bermudez landed a knee to the body. Fili shot in and scored a takedown. Like his takedowns prior, Fili had no control on the ground.

Bermudez went for a body shot early in the final round. Blood trickled from the nose of Fili. “Touchy” landed an uppercut while backing up. Time was called for an accidental low blow on Fili. Time resumed and Bermudez connected with a leg kick. Fili landed a left hand. Bermudez found a bevy of success with strikes in the final minute. Fili wasn’t done yet as he fought back. “The Menace” landed an inside elbow and scored a big takedown. He went for an armbar, but Fili reversed to gain top position to end the fight.

Fili was awarded the split nod.

Final Result: Andre Fili def. Dennis Bermudez via split decision (29-28, 27-30, 29-28)

Andre Fili Reacts To Conor McGregor’s Slurs In Gdansk

Conor McGregor always knows how to inject himself into the limelight, even if it’s someone else’s fight.

The lightweight champion was cageside for his teammate Artem Lobov’s fight with Andre Fili over the weekend and made such a scene that the referee had to stop the fight to admonish the Irishman.

Fili gave his thoughts to MMAFighting.com on McGregor’s antics in Poland, from his interactions with him at the card to his highly-publicized use of a homophobic slur:

“There’s no need to use words like that. You don’t need to demean other people to make yourself seem bigger. Whenever you hear someone use that word or call someone a ‘bitch,’ that makes you look so insecure.”

“That fired me right up. He tried to stare me down and I locked eyes with him and did not back down. He started quoting Notorious B.I.G. lyrics and I just laughed. I was just like ‘not tonight, motherf*cker.’ That’s why I did his ‘billionaire strut’ and everything.”

“There’s nothing like kicking someone’s ass with their best friend watching on in their corner. Conor did me a big favor. I was already ready to go but he made me turn it up another level.”

Fili contends that McGregor was fake with him, saying the two exchanged cordial words following the fight, only to hear minutes later that McGregor was calling him homophobic slurs backstage.

“I told him it was all about the fight, what happened in the fight stayed there, and that I respected him,” Fili said. “I thought we were cool. I meant it, too. I know having Conor in the middle of my fight means I get way more attention, I have more Twitter and Instagram followers now and I’ll make more money. I know what he’s done to lift the sport.

“But then, while I’m doing my interview, unbeknownst to me, he’s in the back calling me that word, while I’m in the cage doing my interview,” Fili said. “Then when I’m in back getting my medicals done, Conor walks up to me and he shakes my hand and tells me he respects me and that we had a bond because of The Ultimate Fighter (the season in which Fili was an assistant coach for Urijah Faber against McGregor’s team) and I told him I respected him.”

McGregor has been widely criticized for using such terms, as he has already been caught saying similar pejoratives in the past.

For Fili’s part, the young Team Alpha Male product says McGregor’s act is not all that it seems.

“Don’t be fake with me,” Fili said. “I’m as real a person as you’re going to meet. You’re always going to know where you stand with me. For him to say what he said and then turn right around and act like we’re cool, that’s so fake.”

Although yesterday’s (Sat., October 21, 2017) UFC Fight Night 118 from the Ergo Arena in Gdansk, Poland, may have been short on palpable buzz, the card did feature some antics from UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor.

‘The Notorious’ appeared cageside to root for friend and training partner Artem Lobov, who met Andre Fili in the feature prelim bout in Gdansk. His tutelage could be heard from afar, and the brash Irish champ became even more animated by approaching the cage to give his instruction.

That was when referee Marc Goddard scolded McGregor by firmly telling him, “What’s gotten into you, Conor? Be professional.” He stepped back and settled himself as Lobov ultimately lost to Fili by decision. The day after, Goddard told MMA Fighting ‘The Notorious’ was essentially acting as a fourth cornerman and could have influenced the fight’s outcome:

“The reason I interjected is because Artem gets a fourth cornerman cage side giving instruction. That’s not allowed. Imagine had Conor talked him through a fight-ending sequence. Then what?

“Conor was basically acting like a fourth cornerman. Walking around the cage side wherever and whenever he wanted. When Fili took down Artem, Conor was right there. That’s simply not fair and not allowed. I won’t have it. He can’t do as he pleases.”

Goddard remained firm in his stance, clarifying that McGregor could have yelled as loudly as he wanted until he approached the cage. In his eyes, what he did was unfair, so Goddard made a steadfast call quickly to uphold the integrity of the match-up:

“If Conor had stood up, stayed at his seat, then he could have shouted till his hearts content. That’s what he’s supposed to do. But what he simply cannot do, what he is not allowed to do, is approach the cage at any point and as I say act as the fourth corner. That’s unfair and unjust. Anyone who knows me will tell you I’ve done this forever, in any country in any situation. My integrity is not wavered and neither is the rules. We can’t allow that. I simply had to act.”

UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor may not have a fight lined up inside the Octagon just yet, but he did make an appearance at yesterday’s UFC Gdansk event to support teammate Artem Lobov.

McGregor was cageside throughout the entire fight, shouting advice “The Russian Hammer’s” way so loudly to the point that referee Marc Goddard had to pause the action and address the Irishman by asking him “What’s gotten into you, Conor? Be professional.”

“The Notorious One’s” fellow SBG Ireland teammate was going toe-to-toe with Team Alpha Male’s Andre Fili, who would go on to defeat Lobov via unanimous decision. It was such a devastating loss for the Russian that he even took to Twitter to contemplate retirement after the event’s conclusion.

On their way back to the locker room area, video surfaced of McGregor consoling Lobov as they walked together, and it appeared as though the audio may have picked up McGregor making a few homophobic slurs towards Fili.

You be the judge:

While it may sound like McGregor called Fili a f****t in the video and the UFC subsequently deleted all of their videos containing the supposed slur, McGregor has actually been a proponent for same-sex marriage in his native Ireland.

He was a vocal supporter of it being passed in his home country two years ago, voicing that support with the following quote (via MMA Fighting):

“We all deserve equal rights. We’re all human here at the end of the day — regardless of color, gender, sexuality. Any of that. It’s all meaningless. We all deserve the same rights. It just feels right to me.”

His Straight Blast Gym (SBG) also tweeted out support for the measure:

But regardless of McGregor’s past support, if he did indeed use the slur, it’s not the best look for the UFC considering former heavyweight champion Fabricio Werdum used the slur several times in a public scuffle with interim lightweight champion Tony Ferguson at a UFC 216 media event this month. McGregor has also been accused of being less than sensitive in the past, gaining criticism for supposedly being racist towards Floyd Mayweather in the over-the-top promotional world tour for their boxing match in August.

During the promotional events, McGregor told Mayweather to “dance for me, boy,” and said he was black “from the bellybutton down,” while gyrating his hips for his “beautiful black fans.” While there will always be a certain amount of off-color remarks from MMA’s most infamous trash talker, some believe his smack talk is beginning to blur the lines of pure disrespect, while others think those offended by it are being too sensitive.

What do you think?
