Reader Roundtable: What Was Your Angriest Moment as an MMA Fan?

(Were you that dumbass who was booing his lungs out at UFC 170? We want to hear from you!)

We haven’t published a reader-submitted CagePotato Roundtable feature in a long time — but every time we’ve tried it, it’s been comedy gold. And so, we figured we’d turn the mics over to the Potato Nation once again. This week’s question: What was your angriest moment as an MMA fan?

For fans of MMA, misery and disappointment come with the territory. But what moment in the sport has left you straight-up furious? Was it a totally botched call by a referee or judge? Ignorant behavior from a big-name fighter or promoter? A blown parlay bet? Maybe talking about it might give you some closure.

E-mail your stories to [email protected] by this Friday night at midnight ET. (Please let us know if you don’t want us to print your real names.) We’ll pick a handful of the best ones and run ‘em early the following week. Thanks, guys.

EXCLUSIVE: ‘Hip Show’ Two-on-Two MMA League Coming to AXS TV on March 14th…Sponsored by CagePotato!

(Skip to the 0:45 mark to see a guy get arm-barred and heel-hooked AT THE SAME DAMN TIME. Props: AXS TV Fights)

Hip Show calls itself “two-on-two arena fighting,” but it’s more like American Gladiators meets a Russian dashcam-brawl. Instead of two guys fighting on a flat surface (borrrrrring!), it’s four guys fighting in a room full of platforms and obstacles. Seriously, this thing is absolutely insane.

CagePotato has been a longtime supporter of MMA’s freak scene, and we’re proud to announce that we’ll be the instant-replay sponsor for Hip Show’s North American television debut, March 14th on AXS TV. The broadcast will feature highlights from the league’s previous Russian events, and will be hosted by two of our old friendsCyrus Fees and Casey Oxendine. Check out the official announcement below, which was released by AXS TV exclusively to CagePotato last night…

The two-hour program makes its North American TV debut on Friday, March 14 at 10 p.m. ET (7 p.m. PT) and will include the best fights from the show’s season one lightweight and middleweight tournaments and championship finals.

HIP SHOW: ARENA COMBAT is a two-on-two competition that takes place on a battleground aptly named “The Arena.” “The Arena” includes five different obstacles that present a realistic, urban-style of combat. Fighters look to score points through striking, grappling and controlling the obstacles. The HIP SHOW: ARENA COMBAT tournaments are contested in the 70 kilogram lightweight (about 154 pounds) and 80 kilogram middleweight (about 176 pounds) weight classes, and in a round robin format.

Internationally renowned ring announcer Cyrus Fees delivers the play-by-play and MMA veteran and coach Casey Oxendine provides color commentary throughout the program. Said Fees, “There’s nothing like making history, and I truly believe this will blow the minds of the North American MMA fan.”

HIP SHOW: ARENA COMBAT is the craziest MMA based event I’ve ever seen. Once you watch the preview clip [Ed. note: We’ve embedded it at the top of the post] you will understand why we are so excited to bring this competition to North American television,” said AXS TV FIGHTS CEO Andrew Simon.

The Unofficial ‘UFC Coloring Book’ Art Contest: And the Winners Are…

(One of our favorite entries from Laura Nicholson, who we’ve disqualified because she’s friggin’ ALF and we’re inherently biased towards her.)

First off, thanks to everybody who drew new tattoos for Alan Belcher in last week’s unofficial UFC coloring book art contest, and thanks to Masato Toys for the inspiration! We’ve selected three winners who you can see after the jump. Honorable mentions go to troll-face, Bieber, and this guy. Enjoy…

Booking Alert: Chris Weidman Will Face Vitor Belfort at UFC 173

(Chris Weidman cheers on NSAC officials as they deliberate. / Photo via Getty)

Chris Weidman‘s first middleweight title defense against someone not named Anderson Silva will take place at UFC 173 on May 24th. Weidman will be facing the young dinosaur Vitor Belfort, who is on a three-fight winning streak and most recently became the first man to knock out Dan Henderson at UFC Fight Night 32.

Of note: The fight is taking place in Las Vegas. Belfort’s last three fights were located in Brazil. Conspiratorially minded individuals suspected this clever booking had something to do with Belfort’s much-maligned TRT use. When venerable MMA journalist Kevin Iole tried to separate himself from Dana White’s cheerleaders (aka the MMA media) and call attention to the issue, he was reprimanded.

The TRT issue will, in some ways, overshadow the combatants and the other narratives present in the fight—Weidman coming into his own as champion after definitely proving his superiority over Silva, Belfort’s resurgence as a top contender, etc. The Nevada State Athletic Commission is unsure of whether they’ll award Belfort a therapeutic use exemption, while Dana White has switched stances on the TRT issue. He’s now hoping the commission denies Belfort’s TUE request and TRT gets banned from MMA. Go figure.

It’s going to be an interesting spring.

CagePotato Presents: The Unofficial ‘UFC Coloring Book’ Art Contest!

(Click for larger version.)

Masato Toys recently put out an incredible (but unfortunately fake) UFC coloring book, featuring kid-friendly mazes, chest-less ring girls, and classic moments from UFC’s past. One page caught our eye in particular: The above image of Alan Belcher without his famous(ly ugly) Johnny Cash tattoo.

There’s a lot of space to cover on that arm, and we’d love to see how you’d fill it. Using Photoshop, MS Paint, or a printer and actual crayons, please draw a new tattoo for Alan onto the image and send the resulting work to BG at [email protected].

A week from today, we’ll pick our three favorites who will win…well, we’re not sure yet. Maybe some CagePotato shirts if we still have some left. Maybe just some shout-outs on Twitter. Maybe nothing. That’s what makes this contest “unofficial.” Take it or leave it. Good luck everybody, and follow Masato Toys on Facebook right here.
