Dana WhiteIn the week and a half since the Finale of The Ultimate Fighter Season 12, speculation has run rampant about who the coaches will be for the show’s 13th season, which will begin taping in early 2011. UFC President Dana White said on Wednesday that he’s about 48 hours away from knowing the coaches’ identities.

“We should have it done by Friday,” White said at a press conference in Rio de Janeiro, where he announced that the UFC would host a fight card in Brazil in August.

So who are the likely choices?

A voracious reader of sci-fi and fantasy novels, WEC lightweight champion Ben Henderson is currently in the midst of plowing through a a re-telling of the King Arthur myth called “King Maker,” a fitting title for someone whose stated goal is to become the sport’s pound-for-pound best.

Even a year ago, it seemed highly unlikely Henderson could reach such a level anytime soon while under the banner of the WEC. But a sudden merger paired with a crack at the UFC lightweight champion for the winner of Thursday’s WEC title match between champ Henderson and No. 1 contender Anthony Pettis puts him two wins away from likely adding his name to the pound-for-pound list.

The first obstacle will be at WEC 53, with Henderson and Pettis closing out the last show in organizational history, but the ultimate goal remains somewhere in the back of his mind.

WEC lightweight No. 1 contender Anthony Pettis, who was featured on the MTV documentary series World of Jenks in September, reunited with filmmaker Andrew Jenks when Jenks called in Monday afternoon to join Pettis on MMAFighting.com’s The MMA Hour.

On Monday’s program, Jenks revealed he was actually sent a number of tapes of fighters more popular at the time by the UFC/WEC during the pre-production process, but one particular captivating moment on Pettis’ tape sealed the deal in his selection of Pettis.

The always self-motivated Anthony Pettis required no extra incentive to perform well in his upcoming WEC lightweight title challenge against Ben Henderson at WEC 53. So when the stakes of the fight was raised last Friday — the winner would receive a UFC title shot — Pettis’ new concern was the potential problem of too much motivation.

“I have a problem with overtraining,” Pettis said Monday on The MMA Hour. “I’m the first guy in the gym and the last guy to leave, so [coach] Duke [Roufus] really monitors how much I train and makes sure I’m not overtraining.”

In just a little over three years into his professional MMA career, Pettis has an opportunity to meet the winner of the Jan. 1 UFC title fight between Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard at a later date.

“This adds more fuel to the fire,” Pettis added. “I just have to make sure how much I pay attention to this, I don’t want to overtrain.”
