Former undisputed UFC lightweight champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov has admitted there are three opponents that come to mind that he wishes he had shared the Octagon with during his time with the promotion, including former duel-weight titleholder, Georges St-Pierre, and scheduled foe, Tony Ferguson.

Khabib, a former undisputed lightweight champion under the UFC banner, called time on his professional mixed martial arts career back in October 2020 in Abu Dhabi, UAE – defeating former interim titleholder, Justin Gaethje with a second round triangle to successfully unify the division championships.

In the time since, Khabib has been linked with a slew of potential fights to snap a retirement, however, has insisted he will not return to the Octagon, after promising his mother to never make a professional walk following the loss of his coach and father, Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov.

Khabib Nurmagomedov names 3 opponents he wished he fought in the UFC

Admitting there are three opponents he wished he had of fought before calling time on his professional career, Khabib weighed up a fight with long-time rival, former interim gold holder, Ferguson.

“Of course, it was Tony Ferguson for sure,” Khabib Nurmagomedov said during an interview with Class A Events. “But this has never happened.”

“In my mind? Yes, it was couple fighters – it was couple fighters for sure,” Khabib Nurmagomedov explained. “OK, GSP (Georges St-Pierre), if you want – but I respect this guy a lot. I grew up with his fights. When he became UFC champion in 2007, I (hadn’t started) my professional career. I was an amateur fighter and watched a lot of his fights with my father. GSP was like a role model in MMA for me. If you guys want (that) fight, OK – let’s say GSP.”

As for Khabib’s third choice of opponent, he picked former UFC and WEC lightweight champion, Anthony Pettis, who was previously linked briefly with a 2019 fight against the Dagestan native.

“And I think it was 2014-15 when Anthony Pettis was UFC champion,” Khabib Nurmagomedov explained. “(At) that time, I really, really wanted to fight this guy, but then he lost his title vsd. Rafael dos Anjos. After that his career go down – he never came back. It was Anthony Pettis, Tony Ferguson, and Canadian superstar GSP.” (Transcribed by Yahoo! Finance)

Anthony Pettis, Stevie Ray

Anthony Pettis lost out for a second time to Stevie Ray at the 2022 PFL Playoffs.

This past Friday, Pettis returned to the octagon for an immediate rematch with Ray just six weeks separated from their first outing this year in June. The former UFC lightweight champion failed to avenge his loss as he lost out by unanimous decision at PFL Playoffs 1 from inside Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

Anthony Pettis broke both his hands in the second defeat to Stevie Ray at PFL Playoffs

In their first clash, Ray managed to submit Pettis in round two via a modified body triangle. It was evident from the get-go in their rematch that Ray was looking to replicate his highlight-reel finish. Ray kept closing the distance and attempting takedowns. However, his motive to get a takedown was not targeted for ground and pound, but instead to take Pettis’ back.

Ray did well to lure Pettis into the trap but “Showtime” was determined to not succumb to the same move again. The 32-year-old Scot not only broke Pettis’ hopes of getting closer to the $1 million prize, but he also shattered his hands.

Pettis took to Twitter to share the update, writing: “2 broken hands SMH.”

Following his departure from the UFC in Dec. 2020, Pettis has gone 1-4 in his last five outings since joining the PFL. His sole win came over Myles Price, whom he finished in the opening round in May.

Although Pettis is past his prime, he continues to be a fan favorite and received a standing ovation from the arena during his walk-in. He showed signs of flair with some fast head kicks but failed to do significant damage. Considering how big of a name he still is in the sport, it’s likely he is still fighting in the promotion for the paycheck instead of the tournament prize.

UFC welterweight Nate Diaz has sent a message of support to his former opponent Anthony ‘Showtime’ Pettis ahead of his upcoming rematch with Stevie Ray at the PFL Playoffs.

Nate Diaz and Anthony Pettis squared off in the octagon at UFC 241. The bout was Nate Diaz’s first fight since his 2016 rematch with Conor McGregor whilst Pettis was coming off a spectacular superman punch KO over Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson.

The fight was a competitive back and forth, with both men having moments of success. However, Diaz’s pressure-based boxing style was enough to see him pick up the judge’s decision. Diaz has not won a fight since that bout, and is currently set to fight out the last bout on his contract against Khamzat Chimaev in the main event of UFC 279.

Pettis would compete in the UFC three more times following the loss to Diaz, picking up wins over Alex Morono and Donald Cerrone, as well as coming up short against Carlos Diego Ferreira. Since then, Pettis has switched promotions and now plies his trade in the PFL.

He has had mixed success with the PFL, losing both his fights in the first season with the promotion. However, a first-round triangle submission win over Myles Price ensured he would be a part of the PFL’s 2022 playoffs. Despite this, the former UFC champ still had to compete in the second PFL season bout, where he took on Scotland’s Stevie Ray.

Ray shocked many viewers by locking up a modified twister submission on Pettis in the second round, forcing ‘Showtime’ to tap out. This ensured that not only would Ray become a part of the Playoffs, but he would also immediately rematch Anthony Pettis.

The rematch takes place this Friday, and Nate Diaz has reached out to send a message of support to Pettis, posting the following to his Twitter account: “Good luck to the homie @Showtimepettis kiickass tomorrow at @PFLMMA.”

How do you think Anthony Pettis’s rematch with Stevie Ray will play out? Would you like to see Nate Diaz in the PFL?
