With all the vicious knockouts taking place at Fight Night 75 and Bellator 143 over the weekend, you’d think it would be damn near impossible for any non-combat sport to top MMA in terms of pure violence. But then, the work week rolls in and professional baseball somehow takes the cake.
In the 7th inning of last night’s Cardinals-Pirates game, Pittsburgh third baseman Josh Harrison drilled a shot to center field, drawing in both center fielder Peter Bourjos and left fielder Stephen Piscotty in at break neck speed in an attempt to field the ball. Piscotty opted for a head first dive to make the play, while Bourjos went with a knee-first slide. The resulting collision was undeniably one of the most horrific knockouts in professional baseball history.

Piscotty opted for a head first dive to make the play, while Bourjos went with a knee-first slide. The resulting collision was undeniably one of the most horrific knockouts in professional baseball history.

Piscotty was immediately rendered unconscious by the brutal knee and eventually had to be carted off the field on a stretcher. The good news is that the rookie only appeared to suffer a concussion from the collision and not the broken jaw most MMA fans would have put him on as soon as he started bleeding from his mouth like a stuck pig. (Was that too far? I don’t even know where the line is when it comes to empathy anymore. MMA has truly desensitized me.)

Let’s hope Piscotty is able to have a quick turnaround from such a horrendous injury. In the meantime, God damn, baseball. You scary.

Good idea: Booking a stylistically interesting match between a resurgent Lyoto Machida and Gegard Mousasi for February 8th in Jaraguá do Sul, Santa Catarina, Brazil.
Bad idea: Booking it as the main event of a UFC Fight Night card on FOX Sports 2…because Machida main-eventing on that channel worked so well the first time.
Lyoto Machida vs. Gegard Mousasi is a fight that’ll make hardcore fans happy. It’s one of those matches where you can’t help but go “Hmm, I really wonder how that’s gonna play out,” when you hear that it’s been booked. That’s what we did at CagePotato HQ. We stroked our burgeoning beards and pondered who would win.
Machida is coming off a dominant head-kick knockout of Mark Munoz, in the Dragon’s debut at 185 pounds. Mousasi, while on a four-fight winning streak, hasn’t competed since April 2013. By the time he steps into the cage against Machida in February, the Armenian will have nearly a year’s worth of ring rust.
No other matchups have yet been announced for the 2/8 Fight Night card, which will take place at the Arena Jaragua, the same venue that previously hosted Belfort vs. Rockhold. So will February’s lack of baseball produce a considerable uptick in ratings? Or is this one of those international events that us North Americans aren’t supposed to care about in the first place? Either way, we’ll keep you posted on any more updates for this card, or if either combatant pulls a Lil’ Nog.

With only a few days before a light heavyweight title defense that’s, shall we say, less than exhilarating on paper, UFC light heavyweight kingpin Jon Jones did some last-second promotion for the fight by throwing out the first pitch at last night’s Blue Jays vs. Yankees game in Toronto. If you follow baseball, you may recall that Jones threw out the first pitch during a Padres game before fighting Vladimir Matyushenko, so this wasn’t a completely random experience for him. Plus with UFC 165 taking place in the city this weekend, it was a good opportunity to get the locals fired up for the event.
So how’d he do throwing out the ceremonial first pitch? Well, let’s just say that Jones admitted that he “didn’t practice much” beforehand, so try not to be too hard on him. That video, courtesy of UFC.com, is after the jump.
